Recent Literature on Lepidoptera Vo1.16: No.2 1962 Journal of the Lepidopterists' Society 151 RECEIIJT LITERATURE ON LEPIDOPTERA (Under the supervision of PETER F. BELLINGER) Under this heading are included abstracts of papers and books of interest to lepidopterists. The world's literature is searched systematically, and it is intended that every work on Lepidoptera published after 1946 will be noticed here; omissions of papers more than :3 or 4 years old should be called to Dr. BELLINGER'S attention. New genera and higher categories are shown in CAPITALS, new species and sub species are noted, with type localities if given in print. B. SYSTEMA TICS AND NOMENCLATURE Nye, 1. W. The male genitalia of a great number of the species are figured. Numerous of the Cape Verde !:pecies of the above groups of Lepidoptera are distributed over the continent of Africa and this indicates that the Cape Verde Islands should be referred to the Ethiopian region and not to the Pale arctic. A number of the species are well known migrants with very wide distribution in subtropic areas. [W. H.l Obraztsov, N. Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity.

Biogeographic relict, extinction risk, global warming, species richness, sub-alpine prairies Abstract. During the last few decades the tree line has shifted upward on Mediterranean mountains. This has resulted in a decrease in the area of the sub-alpine prairie habitat and an increase in the threat to strictly orophilous moths that occur there. This also occurred on the Pollino Massif due to the increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall in Southern Italy. We found that a number of moths present in the alpine prairie at 2000 m appear to be absent from similar habitats at 1500–1700 m. Some of these species are thought to be at the lower latitude margin of their range. Among them, Pareulype berberata and Entephria flavicinctata are esti- mated to be the most threatened because their populations are isolated and seem to be small in size. The tops of these mountains are inhabited by specialized moth communities, which are strikingly different from those at lower altitudes on the same massif further south. The majority of the species recorded in the sub-alpine prairies studied occur most frequently and abundantly in the core area of the Pollino Massif.

  • Contrasting Patterns of Karyotype and Sex Chromosome Evolution in Lepidoptera
School of Doctoral Studies in Biological Sciences University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice Faculty of Science Contrasting patterns of karyotype and sex chromosome evolution in Lepidoptera Ph.D. Thesis Mgr. Jindra Šíchová Supervisor: Prof. RNDr. František Marec, CSc. Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Institute of Entomology České Budějovice 2016 This thesis should be cited as: Šíchová J (2016) Contrasting patterns of karyotype and sex chromosome evolution in Lepidoptera. Ph.D. Thesis. University of South Bohemia, Faculty of Science, School of Doctoral Studies in Biological Sciences, České Budějovice, Czech Republic, 91 pp. Annotation It is known that chromosomal rearrangements play an important role in speciation by limiting gene flow within and between species. Furthermore, this effect may be enhanced by involvement of sex chromosomes that are known to undergo fast evolution compared to autosomes and play a special role in speciation due to their engagement in postzygotic reproductive isolation. The work presented in this study uses various molecular- genetic and cytogenetic techniques to describe karyotype and sex chromosome evolution of two groups of Lepidoptera, namely selected representatives of the family Tortricidae and Leptidea wood white butterflies of the family Pieridae. The acquired knowledge points to unexpected evolutionary dynamics of lepidopteran karyotypes including the presence of derived neo-sex chromosome systems that originated as a result of chromosomal rearrangements. We discuss the significance of these findings for radiation and subsequent speciation of both lepidopteran groups. The mate rial contains four species, which are described as new species: Neurothaumasia tenuipennella, Neurothaumasia tunesiella, Infurcitinea corleyi and Ateliotum larseni. From Matratinea rufulicaput Szir aki & Sz ö c s, 1990 and Anomalotinea gardesanella (H a rtig , 1950) were described and illustrated the female genitalia for the first time, from Elatobia bugrai K ocak, 1981 were described and illustrated the male genitalia for the first time. The examination of the type series of Euplocamus anthracinalis amanalis O st h e ld e r , 1936 shows, that this taxon is a new synonym of Euplocamus delagrangei R ag o n o t, 1895. There was designated and selected the lectotype for Euplocamus anthracinalis amanalis O st h e l d e r , 1936.

AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF THOMAS EVAN NEBEKERfor the DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Name) (Degree) in ENTOMOLOGY presented on August 29, 1973 (Major) (Date) Title: POPULATION DYNAMICS OF THE DOUGLAS-FIR CONE MOTH BARBARA COLFAXIANA (KFT. ) (LEPIDOPTERA: OLETHR EUTIDAE) Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved; William P. Agel A population of the Douglas-fir cone moth, Barbara colfaxiana (Kft. ), was studied on the Buckhead Seed Production Area, Oakridge, Oregon, during 1971 and 1972.A method of estimating cone and insect populations is presented.Factors contributing to the mortality of B. colfaxiana are discussed, with resinosis being the critical factor. Larval food consumption is discussed with reference to calories of cone tissue consumed through time. An average of761 calories are consumed through the four larval stages. Amounts consumed of each structure (bracts, scales, seeds) are presented. A structural model is presented that depicts the role of B. colfaxiana in a natural stand. Population.
