Over a single bidirectional fiber, the UTAH-100/XFD supplied key content elements and the main program feed for WDRB’s sprawling 22-camera coverage of Thunder Over Louisville, an airshow and fireworks extravaganza that marked the official opening of Kentucky Derby season in April. SOLUTION OVERVIEW Upping the Ante on HD Coverage WDRB-TV With estimated average attendance of half a million, Thunder Over Louisville Local FOX affiliate in Louisville, Kentucky has become the largest annual event in the Louisville region. As the local Fox affiliate, WDRB-TV had provided the live broadcast of Thunder in three past Business Drivers years, and its 2007 coverage marked the event’s first all-HD broadcast. Use one single-mode fiber link for massive live production When chosen for the fourth time to cover Thunder Over Louisville in 2016, Maintain pristine video quality WDRB worked with F&F Productions to double the full-HD production to 22 strategic shooting locations on both sides of the Ohio River. These included a Utah Scientific Solution gimbal-mounted camera on a drone for bird’s-eye-view live footage (marking UTAH-100/XFD fiber distribution frame the first time the FAA approved flying of a drone during an air show), a roving/ with fiber transport nontethered HD camera to capture spectators enjoying themselves, and a camera shot from atop the 300-foot-tall Humana Corporation skyscraper to Results capture the F16 fighters in the air show. Seamless bidirectional delivery of main program feed and In another “first” for Thunder coverage, WDRB deployed Live-U cellular supplemental content between on-site bonding transmitters at two local airports, which enabled the station to cut van and WDRB studio in exciting live footage from GoPro cameras mounted in the cockpits of the aircraft participating in the air show. Ironclad reliability for highly complex and sprawling live production with 22 camera feeds For previous years, WDRB was able to access two “dark” fiber connections for the production, but in 2016 the local cable company would only lease Delivery of program feed over 10-mile the station a single fiber at considerable cost. WDRB needed state-of-the-art cable run with no signal degradation signal routing gear that could handle the many complexities of the Outstanding support from Utah production in a cost-effective manner using the single fiber link. Scientific team 1 www.utahscientific.com A Powerful Single-Mode Fiber Solution At the 2016 NAB Show, the station found its solution: Utah Scientific’s UTAH-100/XFD fiber distribution frame with fiber transport technology. “Utah Scientific is known for its ability to design solutions that reflect clients’ exact requirements. Therefore, when we pre- sented our specifications to the Utah Scientific team, we knew they would come back with a plan that would more than meet our needs,” notes Gary Schroder, chief engineer, WDRB- TV. “With the Utah Scientific gear, we were able to establish a bidirectional and seamless fiber link between our production truck, located at ground zero for the fireworks, and the WDRB studio about three miles away.” Going the Distance With No Loss of Signal Quality “ Even with such a heavy signal workload, WDRB was still able We look forward to continuing our highly successful partnership with to achieve pristine HD signal quality with the UTAH-100/XFD Utah Scientific, and not just for the unheard-of 10-year warranty and — a remarkable feat considering that the main production the fact that the company has some of the nicest sales professionals feed had to be sent to the cable provider’s central hub 10 you could ask for. • The Kentucky Derby the Greatest Two Minutes in Sports
The Kentucky Derby The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports The state of Kentucky is famous for two things: bluegrass and horse racing. Kentucky is called the bluegrass state because of its rich soil and pastures covered in bluegrass. Bluegrass is a kind of grass that horses love to eat. Kentucky has a lot of farms that raise racehorses. The state is also home to one of the most famous horse races—the Kentucky Derby. The racetrack is located in Louisville, Kentucky’s largest city. The race, which takes place each year on the first Saturday in May, is filled with fun events and traditions The Kentucky Derby is often called “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” because it only takes two minutes for the horses to run around the track. While the race only lasts for two minutes, the festivities that go along with the Kentucky Derby last much longer than that. 2017 Reading Is Fundamental • Content and art created by Simone Ribke The Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby Festival begins two weeks before the race with an event called the Thunder Over Louisville. The Thunder is one of the largest (and loudest) fireworks displays in the country. Next is the Great Balloon Race, in which hundreds of hot air balloons take flight in a colorful display. The balloon race is a crowd favorite and brings spectators from miles around. The next event is The Great Steamboat Race. The race takes place along the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky to Jeffersonville, Indiana. While two or three boats usually compete, the race always features the Belle of Louisville, a steamboat built and operated since 1914.

  • LOUISVILLE DOWNTOWN Revitalization Team ACTION PLAN
LOUISVILLE DOWNTOWN Revitalization Team ACTION PLAN 1 FOREWORD This Action Plan showcases the work of a 100+ member team of Louisvillians committed to accelerating downtown Louisville’s recovery following 15 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, including social justice protests, both of which changed our collective lives in downtown. On January 14, 2021, Mayor Greg Fischer announced the creation of the Downtown Revitalization Team at his annual State of the City address, laying out some of the hopes, challenges, and opportunities in the new year ahead. Mayor Fischer called on Louisvillians to reimagine, revitalize, and restore downtown to a thriving and inclusive place for residents, employers, and tourists. The Team is a diverse group of business owners, industry leaders, residents, and community partners who came together in six committees over the course of six months to tackle some of downtown’s most challenging problems. After agreeing to a charter which guided the formation of this Action Plan, committees met at least twice a month, first in small break out groups to discuss issues ranging from public safety, vacant and underutilized office space, tourism, arts & culture, diversity, equity & inclusion, small businesses, downtown residents, and the messaging and perception of downtown. During the second monthly meetings, committee leaders shared the ideas that had emerged during committee discussion, committee goals, and the action steps needed to be taken to move from concept to reality. As the depth of work increased, so did the cross-collaboration across committees, which was anchored by the guidance of the project Steering Committee, a group of twelve dedicated community leaders.

  • BEST FOOD & BEVERAGE PROGRAM Kentucky Derby Festival
BEST FOOD & BEVERAGE PROGRAM Kentucky Derby Festival (at Thunder Over Louisville and Kroger’s Fest-a-Ville on the Waterfront) a. The Kentucky Derby Festival is a not-for-profit organization which annually produces one of the world’s premiere community celebrations in Louisville, Kentucky. Since 1956, KDF has created fun, excitement, international recognition and a spirit that is unmatched anywhere. Each year in the spring, the Festival produces nearly 70 events during the two weeks leading up to the Kentucky Derby horse race. From Thunder Over Louisville, to the Great Bed Races, BeerFest, BalloonFest, and many, many more events, we bring the Louisville community together in celebration. The civic celebration attracts an estimated 1.5 million people to Louisville each year, while creating an economic impact of over $127 million. None of this could be done without the support of over 400 Corporate Sponsors and 4,000 Volunteers. b. The Kentucky Derby Festival has been working with Concessions by Cox for over 15 years. During the early years of the relationship, Concessions by Cox was simply a third-party vendor that provided dependable work and quality food. But Concessions by Cox has since proven to be much more. In 2011, the Derby Festival put the overall Concessionaire agreement out for bid, and awarded the agreement to Concessions by Cox. After a successful first year, the Derby Festival and Concessions by Cox entered into a 5-year contract. Concessions by Cox now manages our food and beverage program and they bring in multiple third-party vendors to participate. The contract with Cox is more than a written agreement, the contract is a true partnership with a trusted and loyal vendor.

Derby Festival’s Thunder Over Louisville Emergency Information and Action Procedures: - KDF Thunder Emergency Action Plan - KDF Thunder Command Center Internal Emergency Action Plan - KDF Thunder Chow Wagon and Great Lawn Emergency Action Plan - KDF Thunder Emergency Action Plan PA Announcements BEST PUBLIC SAFETY/SECURITY PLAN FOR AN EVENT Thunder Over Louisville/Fest-a-Ville Even though the weather was less than perfect (48-53 degrees, light rain throughout the day), an estimated 500,000 people were attendance for the 2013 Thunder Over Louisville show – the Kentucky Derby Festival’s Opening Ceremonies. As one could imagine, maintaining the safety and security of such a massive crowd every year is an enormous challenge for the Derby Festival and the various local, state and federal law enforcement agencies assigned to the task and current events surely put the planning and preparation to the test. While the potential for serious safety concerns is always present, in light of the timing of the horrific and tragic acts of a few at the finish line of the Boston Marathon a mere 5 days before Thunder and the overall Kentucky Derby Festival, all partners involved with the safety planning were on high alert as we reviewed all aspects of the plans. Based on the comprehensive nature and ever evolving plan, very few changes were made as the Festival approached. Additional bomb detection equipment, plain clothes units, observation towers and camera banks feeding real time digital imaging to the unified Emergency Operations Command (EOC) were just a few of the tweaks that were made. With hundreds of thousands of people in attendance for Thunder Over Louisville, the fireworks and air show is now recognized as the largest single-day, open-air venue in the United States.

And the true impact is further complicated by an evolving federal response for providing relief to different segments of our community, economy, and Louisville Metro Government. Given the number of unknown factors, I thought it prudent to present a continuation budget, knowing that we will undoubtedly need to revise it to achieve a structurally balanced and fiscally responsible plan that represents our city values.
