April 30, 2018, Issue 599 For Pod’s Sake: Exploring On-Demand “It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls,” Bob Dylan famously sang. “For the times the times they are a-changin’.” Dylan wasn’t wailing about media technology, but he could’ve been. A variety of audio entertainment options are rattling radio’s windows and walls, podcasting square among them. According to Edison Research, more than a quarter of Ameri- cans ages 12+ now listen monthly (73 million), a number that’s increased dramatically since 2013, along with weekly listeners, which top 48 million. Industry revenues, which now hover around $250 million, have outpaced projections in recent years and are expected to double by 2020. There’s a lot of upside, in other words, and one look at Netflix suggests the sky could be the limit. The issue for radio is how to respond. Clear-cut strategies are elusive and sugges- tions include everything from treating podcasts Garthcoach: Pearl’s Garth Brooks (r) and Gwendolyn’s Trisha Chris Peterson as a cure-all to avoiding them altogether. “There’s no playbook,” iHeartRadio SVP/Pod- Yearwood (l) with KRTY/San Jose’s Nate Deaton and wife Judy at Stagecoach last night (4/29). casting Chris Peterson acknowledged during CRS 2018’s “Pod- casting: Where The Passion Pays Off” panel in February. “We’re creating something new here.” Songwriters: Pay ’Em Forward The House of Representatives passed the Music Modernization Recycling Bin: Amplifi Media’sSteve Goldstein, a broad- Act (H.R. 5447) 415-0 last Wednesday (CAT 4/25), bringing song- caster-turned-new media strategist who joined writers a step closer to improved compensation when their works Peterson on the CRS panel, says two important are streamed.

  • Bushbee, Michael
July 28,2014 To Whom It May Concern: I am writing in support of the proposed changes to the BMG consent decree. As a songwriter I have been a BMI affiliate for the past 8 years during which time I have built a career working with artists such as P!nk, Kelly Clarkson, Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum, Keith Urban, Christina Aguilera, Shakira and many others. My primary source of income comes from BMI for the performing rights royalties of my songs. It is my lifeblood especially considering that the income from record sales and licensing opportunities has been declining consistently over the past decade. To put it simply, without this income and without an organization like BMI to handle the collection and administration of this income I would not be able to create music for a living. The wonderful creative staff at BMI has also been a friend to me as a professional throughout my career. They have made introductions to key people that have led to some of my most important relationships in music and for that I am grateful. I genuinely believe that they have the best interest of the songwriter at heart and they have proven to be a valuable member of my team. I feel that it is critical that the consent decree be modernized to reflect the new landscape of our business. Anything that will allow BMI to operate in a faster, more efficient and less expensive way will absolutely benefit the songwriters affiliated there. I also think that it’s important to give the music publishers who provide such a vital service to our community the opportunity to move away from an “all-in” or “all-out” choice when it comes to performing rights.

  • LITTLE BIG TOWN BIOGRAPHY PAIN KILLER Hot on the Heels of Their
LITTLE BIG TOWN BIOGRAPHY PAIN KILLER Hot on the heels of their wildly successful album Tornado, Little Big Town’s prescription for continued success and creative drive is in their sixth album, Pain Killer. The two years since Tornado’s release have proven to be the most formative and motivational for the inspired family of artists, together since 1998. In the short time since Tornado, Little Big Town earned two number one radio hits with Tornado and Pontoon, a Grammy, two ACM and three CMA awards and an Emmy. They also found time to headline a sold-out tour, join Keith Urban across North America and host the CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock twice. These hard-earned accolades and new opportunities provided a steady dose of inspiration at every turn, leading them to a fresh and very intentional approach to their latest studio album. They co-wrote most of Tornado’s songs as a group and knocked out production in a matter of weeks, whereas the road to Pain Killer was significantly longer in the making, and much more calculated. LBT intentionally began writing and curating their songs early in their tour for Tornado in May 2013. They followed the creative energy wherever it flowed by splitting into different writing combinations. “We decided not to lock ourselves into writing as a group. We wanted a more relaxed and free approach,” says Karen Fairchild. “There was no pressure to write as certain groups at certain times. We followed the inspiration instead of forcing it.” “I don’t know that we would have written Tumble and Fall if the boys had been in the room,” she continues.
