In the past year alone, we funded 75 students from across Harvard to study or research in the Middle East and North Africa. Two of our signature programs are based at the CMES Tunisia Office in Tunis. Last summer we hosted six students who spent five weeks in an intensive advanced Arabic language program focusing on reading and research skills for those concentrating in Arabic Middle Eastern and Islamic humanities and social sciences. Arabic Preceptor Nour Barmada taught the classes and CMES Tunisia Office Administrative Manager Sihem Lamine led students on excursions to the National Archives and other research institutions. And in January, twelve students participated in our third annual Winter Term program in Tunisia, an introduction to the country’s history, geography, culture, and literature. In addition, two of our advanced graduate students, Laura Thompson (Committee on the Study of Religion) and Aytug Sasmaz (Department of Government), are in residence conducting pre-dissertation research on Tunisia.

Author profiling is the process of extracting author traits, which con- stitute the profile of an author, by analyzing his/her writings. Detecting these traits is useful and important process in the domain of social media analysis. In this notebook, we present our approach for author profiling task that is one of the tasks required in “Author Profiling and Deception Detection in Arabic (APDA)” workshop 2019. The focus of this task is to identify the age, gender, and language variety of Arabic Twitter users (tweeps). For this purpose, several feature vectors and classifiers were evaluated to find out the best prediction models for the three traits. SMO classifier with the feature vector that consisted of UniGram and Stem was the best model for each three traits: gender, age and variety1. I write this letter on a sunny summer morning reflecting on CMES’s events over the past semester. As you will see in this abundantly rich and beautifully collated and edited newsletter, this past academic year has been bustling with wonderful people and activity. The spring semester began on a sad note with the passing in December of our beloved professor, mentor, advisor, colleague, and friend Roger Owen. CMES had the honor of hosting a memorial reception in February, which brought together members of Roger’s immediate and extended family, many of his former students, and colleagues and friends from across the globe. Although he has departed from us, his presence at CMES is felt every day. On a happier note, we welcomed back Jesse Howell (PhD ’17), who is now our new Academic Programs Manager and Associate Director of the CMES AM Program in Regional Studies. Jesse joins us with a doctorate in Ottoman history, first-hand experience with Harvard life, and several years of directing our Turkey winter term program for undergraduates.
