In South Africa, the tour was expected to reopen the doors to international competition for the Springboks after an anti-apartheid sporting boycott had forced the sport into relative isolation during the 1970s. In the face of much international condemnation, the Springboks toured to New Zealand and the USA in 1981 where they encountered large and often violent demonstrations as those who opposed the tour attempted to scuttle it.

On Sunday they spent the morning with the All Blacks, who were about to leave for their northern tour, which was very special for the guys. Mick Byrne took the team for a skills session and Aaron Cruden and Sam Cane did a Q & A session on being All Blacks. The boys learnt a lot about professional rugby and new skillsets to develop their game. Middleweight tournament The middleweight tournament was this year won by Auckland. Cliff Lyon led a very good middleweight sub-committee which put together the tournament. Teams from Wellington, North Harbour, Waikato, Thames Valley and Auckland battled it out at the College Rifles club on their famed artificial turf. Barbarians club committee The hard-working committee has had another busy year, with Photo: Terry Horne Terry Photo: everyone pulling their weight. Our history and influence on the game of Rugby Union The Cradle of Scottish Rugby Sir Walter Scott ‘Then strip , lads, and to it, though sharp be the weather, And if, by mischance, you should happen to fall, There are worse things in life than a tumble in heather, And Life is itself but a game of foot-ball’ Sir Walter Scott, founding director of Edinburgh Academy 1824 - The Edinburgh Academy • The Academy adopted many its practices from the Royal High School probably including the playing of football • This print seems to suggest some kind of ‘muddle’ or maul taking place through the gates 1840’s - Football at the Academy • It was a game of the most primitive kind - crude and devoid of regulation or rule. • Hardly recognisable to the current game. • The most cruel ‘hacking’ with iron- toed and heeled boots was allowed and suffered, in what was called a ‘muddle’ - the modern ‘maul’. 1845 – First Set of Rugby Rules • The first set of Rugby School “football” rules were drafted in 1845 • At that time Archibald Campbell Tait, who had been Edinburgh Academy dux 1827 and later became Archbishop of Canterbury (1868/82), was the Rugby School Headmaster • There is no known input to these rules by Tait, but his brother did play for Hope’s club in Edinburgh the 1820’s Archibald Campbell Tait 1854 – Raeburn Place • Raeburn Place was acquired by former pupils of the Edinburgh Academy so that sports, primarily cricket, could be played by pupils and former pupils. • The ground opened for play on 17th May 1854 • Raeburn Place is probably the oldest bespoke team sports ground in Scotland.

1 On the 3rd June 2017 (Queens Birthday Weekend) Poverty Bay host East Coast Rugby Union in their annual Pre-Season clash, during this weekend a celebration of combined Poverty Bay & East Coast teams from 1955 through to 2000 is taking place. As I was making my first ever trip to Gisborne to experience this occasion I thought only it right to look into the rich history these two unions have had over these years. Especially this year, as on the day of the annual clash in Gisborne between Poverty Bay and East Coast, the 2017 British & Irish Lions open their much awaited tour of New Zealand in Whangarei against the NZ Provincial Barbarians. Since 1930 the combined team had played the “Lions” on several occasions with the 1966 clash the stand out as the combined side almost accomplished the pinnacle of a Lions scalp to only fall short with a score line of 6 – 9 in favour of the tourists. So with the help of many books and other research materials I have compiled the following details of the combined teams with full squad, team and scoring details in depth from 1955. We also cover briefly the games played pre 1955 in which several were with a mixture of teams combined with the inclusion of players from Hawkes Bay and Bay of Plenty. My hope here is to have a record that will spark debate and interest to those who may have forgotten the rich history that these two unions share Kevin Hare - RugbyHeartland.co.nz 2 Pre 1955 – (Hawkes Bay) /POVERTY BAY/EAST COAST COMBINED vs: 1950 British Lions 1949 Australia 1948 Hawkes Bay 1942 Otago 1949 Australia 1937 South Africa 1930 Great Britain 1925 New South Wales 1923 New South Wales 1921 New South Wales/South Africa POVERTY BAY EAST COAST COMBINED vs: 2000 Scotland 1992 Ireland 1990 Scotland 1989 NZ Maori 1978 NZ Maori 1977 Olympians/British Lions/Hawkes Bay 1971 Olympians/British Lions 1966 Bay of Plenty/British Lions 1965 NZ Maori/B.O.P/Sth Africa 1959 Waikato/British Lions 1956 Hawkes Bay/South Africa 1955 Australia 3 4 1955 POVERTY BAY - EAST COAST vs Australia Colours: Scarlet Selectors: Messrs.
