At a ceremony held in , Aftersocks was initially announced as the winner of the FINZ Online Campaign category. But the highlight of the evening came with the announcement of the night’s top award. Aftersocks was named as the joint winner, along with Ronald McDonald House (SI) of the Premier Fundraising Award for Excellence 2012. FINZ CEO, James Austin says Aftersocks was ‘‘one of those rare campaigns – and award entries – that has ‘winner’ written all over it from go-to- whoa.” The reach of social media played a large part in the sales success of Aftersocks - the funky red and black striped socks which incorporate the seismo- graph graphic of the February 22, 2010 quake. The aim was to sell 1000 pairs, but through social networking Aftersocks caught people’s imaginations and sales rocketed. Close to 19,000 pairs have been sold. Over $110,000 has so far been raised for the Mayoral Fund, with a final ‘wash up’ payment to be made once remaining stocks are sold. Socks can still be purchased at www.aftersocks.co.nz.

BY DEAN TAYLOR

Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society’s Envirocentre came a step closer last week when the building that will be home to the centre was shifted from its temporary site to its final location. A grant of $20,000 from the Lion Foundation allowed the shift to be made by local firm G&C Building Movers. Owner Gene Letford says it is the second time he has moved the unwanted building from Pirongia School. When the society secured ownership of the building he was working for the company that shifted it to the temporary site on Peter and Shirley Kewish’s farm. Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society chairperson Clare St Pierre says they TC170512DT01 are extremely grateful to the Kewishs for FORMER Pirongia School classrooms being prepared to be dropped into their final location on Rangimarie Reserve as the allowing the building to be stored at their Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society’s Envirocentre. property while negotiations for the Envirocentre continued. Recently locally owned electricity lines com- pany Waipa Networks stepped in with a $4000 grant to meet resource consent costs for the re- siting of the building. That came soon after DOC gave approval for the centre to be situated on its Rangimarie Reserve on Crozier Street. Waipa Networks CEO Ray Milner said the project will be a significant benefit to Pirongia and the larger Waikato community. The grant continues Waipa Network’s sup- port for the society’s work, mainly through the FREE ‘Sponsor A Hectare’ project on Mount Pirongia. The Envirocentre will provide an education centre in Pirongia township and environmental education to the local community and visitors. The historic school building now sits near other historic buildings, such as Playcentre and the Visitor Centre and when completed will be DRAPE available to educational groups and the public. The main role is to support the work and aspirations of Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society, but to also provide an amenity for the reserve to enhance its use. With a planned deck leading out on to the MAKING reserve, an approved landscape plan to complete and the addition of toilet and kitchen facilities, it is seen as a chance to create a special precinct.
