  • Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection
Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.

  • Indian Premier League 2019
VVS LAXMAN Published 3.4.19 The last ten days have reiterated just how significant a place the Indian Premier League has carved for itself on the crickeng landscape. Spectacular acon and stunning performances have brought the tournament to life right from the beginning, and I expect the next six weeks to be no less gripping. From our point of view, I am delighted at how well Hyderabad have bounced back from defeat in our opening match, against Kolkata. Even in that game, we were in control ll the end of the 17th over of the chase, but Andre Russell took it away from us with brilliant ball-striking. Even though I was in the opposion dugout, I couldn’t help but marvel at how he snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. The beauty of our franchise is that the shoulders never droop, the heads never drop. There is too much experience, quality and class among the playing group for that to happen. As members of the support staff, our endeavour is to keep the players in a good mental space. But eventually, it is the players who have to deliver on the park, and that’s what they have done in the last two games. David Warner has been outstanding. There is lile sign that he has been out of internaonal cricket for a year. His work ethics are exemplary, and I can see the hunger and desire in his eyes. He is striking the ball as beaufully as ever, and there is a calmness about him that is infecous.

Pakistan claimed the honours in the dress rehearsal for the final with a memo- rable victory over the world champions in a dramatic day/night encounter at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. The game lived up to its billing right from the onset as Saeed Anwar and Saleem Elahi tore into the Australia attack. Elahi was in particularly impressive form, blast- ing 79 from 91 balls as Pakistan plundered 290 from their 50 overs. But, never wanting to be outdone, the Australians responded in fine style with Adam Gilchrist attacking the Pakistan bowling with equal relish. The wicketkeep- er sensationally raced to his 20th one-day international half-century in just 29 balls on his way to a quick-fire 70. Once Saqlain Mushtaq had ended his 44-ball knock however, skipper Waqar Younis stepped up to take the game by the scruff of the neck. The pace star is bowling as well as he has done in years as his side come to the end of their tour of England and his figures of six for 59 fully deserved the man of the match award and to take his side to victory.

As if losing the first Ashes test isn’t enough... Cricket Australia’s dirty laundry is now being aired while the Australian team prepare for the second test. Former coach Mickey Arthur is suing Cricket Australia following his public sacking just 10 days before the first Ashes test. Arthur has filed proceedings in the Fair Work Commission alleging, among other things, that his sacking was unlawful on the grounds of racial discrimination. Amber Sharp That is, Arthur claims that he was discriminated against because of his Partner South African background and because of a perception that he didn’t +61 2 8216 3099 understand the “Australian way”. He also alleges that he was not [email protected] supported by Cricket Australia over the “homework gate” affair resulting in four players being sent home from an Indian tour. Arthur is claiming damages in the order of $4 million, which he estimates to be his losses resulting from the early termination of his contract which was due to expire in June 2015. Plus he wanted a further 3 years beyond that time. While damages for general protections claims are not subject to a cap, a damages award in that amount based on discrimination alone would certainly be exceptional. If a resolution isn’t reached in the Fair Work Commission, Arthur will likely elect to pursue his claim in the Federal Court, at which time he can add common law claims such as breach of contract. • Dhoni (C) Celebrate the Wicket Watson, a Father of Two, Said
47 FRIDAY, MARCH 25, 2016 Watson to retire after World T20 MOHALI: Australian all-rounder Shane Watson announced yes- terday he would retire from international cricket after the ongo- ing World Twenty20 in India, bringing to an end a sterling career spanning 14 years. Watson, 34, shared his decision to call it quits with teammates in Mohali, where Australia take on Pakistan in a World T20 group match today, Cricket Australia said. “It’s been over the last week that it’s really become clear that now really is the right time to retire from all international cricket,” Watson said in a statement issued by the national cricket body. Watson had retired from Test cricket at the end of last year’s Ashes tour of England and has not played one-day internationals since September. Watson, who is also retiring from first-class cricket, would however remain available for lucrative T20 leagues around the world. Other players such as the West Indies’ Chris Gayle have also stopped playing Tests in order to earn big bucks in tourna- ments like Australia’s Big Bash or the Indian Premier League. An opening batsman and a reliable pacer, Watson scored 5,757 runs from 190 ODIs. He also took 168 ODI wickets and holds the Australian record for the highest ODI score, an unbeaten 185 against Bangladesh in Dhaka in 2011. Always a dangerous player in the shortest format, he has scored 1,400 runs from 56 T20 internationals so far while taking 46 wickets. Watson was the last surviving player of the Australian golden era, having played along with the likes of Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist.
