Brashares, Chair Global declines in biological diversity are increasingly well documented and threaten the welfare and resilience of ecological and human communities. Despite international commitments to better assess and protect biodiversity, current monitoring effort is insufficient and conservation targets are not being met (e.g., Convention on Biological Diversity 2010 Target). Protected areas are a cornerstone of attempts to shield wildlife from anthropogenic impact, yet their effectiveness is uncertain. In this dissertation, I investigated the monitoring and conservation of wildlife (specifically carnivores and other larger mammals) within the context of a poorly studied savanna reserve in a tropical developing region: Mole National Park (MNP) in the West African nation of Ghana. I first evaluated the efficacy of the park’s long-term, patrol-based wildlife monitoring system through comparison with a camera-trap survey and an assessment of sampling error. I found that park patrol observations underrepresented MNP’s mammal community, recording only two-thirds as many species as camera traps over a common sampling period. -

After the first European Zoo Nutrition Conference in Rotterdam, in 1999, we are happy to present you the 9th European Zoo Nutrition Conference in Liberec, the Czech Republic. The European Nutrition Group (ENG) has proven to be an active group within EAZA. Certainly, it means that the animals in the European zoos will benefit from the improved diets as a result of presentations, posters, workshops and discussions held at the conferences and by the other activities organised by the ENG. One of the promoters of the ENG, Andrea Fidgett, resigned after chairing the group for more than 10 years, as she accepted a position in the USA. Ollie Szyszka, nutritionist in Marwell Zoo, will be the new chair and intends to stimulate and promote zoo animal nutrition within the ENG and European zoo community. The organising committee is pleased to present you a wide range of talks and posters, varying from sustainable palm oil, rhinoceros feeding, contraception by feeding, dietary drift, fertility in birds, milk composition, insects as feed for zoo animals to pest control in zoos. Prior to the conference, the EAZA Academy in cooperation with ENG, organises a workshop on January 26th titled: pellet formulation. After the success of the practical workstations during the last conference in Arnhem Zoo, we will have several workstation again during the zoo visit on Saturday, where information will be presented on specific zoo animal nutrition items during. -
The 2008 IUCN Red Listings of the World's Small Carnivores
The 2008 IUCN red listings of the world’s small carnivores Jan SCHIPPER¹*, Michael HOFFMANN¹, J. W. DUCKWORTH² and James CONROY³ Abstract The global conservation status of all the world’s mammals was assessed for the 2008 IUCN Red List. Of the 165 species of small carni- vores recognised during the process, two are Extinct (EX), one is Critically Endangered (CR), ten are Endangered (EN), 22 Vulnerable (VU), ten Near Threatened (NT), 15 Data Deficient (DD) and 105 Least Concern. Thus, 22% of the species for which a category was assigned other than DD were assessed as threatened (i.e. CR, EN or VU), as against 25% for mammals as a whole. Among otters, seven (58%) of the 12 species for which a category was assigned were identified as threatened. This reflects their attachment to rivers and other waterbodies, and heavy trade-driven hunting. The IUCN Red List species accounts are living documents to be updated annually, and further information to refine listings is welcome. Mungos mungo – Banded Mongoose Assessment Rationale The Banded Mongoose is listed as Least Concern as, although its distribution is restricted to the northeast of the assessment region, it is generally common in suitable habitat and is present in several protected areas. There are no major threats that could cause range-wide population decline. Accidental persecution through poisoning, controlled burning, and infectious disease may lead to local declines, whilst wildlife ranching might have a positive effect by conserving more suitable habitat and connecting subpopulations. Despite this, mongoose fossils from the Cradle of Humankind, Gauteng, South Africa, have received relatively little interest. This paper presents the diverse mongoose craniodental assemblage of the Early Pleistocene fossil locality Cooper’s D. A total of 29 mongoose specimens from five genera were identified at Cooper’s including numerous first appearances in the Cradle or in South Africa. The exceptional mongoose assemblage at Cooper’s likely reflects the effects of an unknown taphonomic process, although mongooses follow other carnivore 2 groups in the Cradle in displaying an apparent preference for the southern part. This investigation shows the value of mongooses as palaeoecological indicators and supports previous interpretations of the environment at Cooper’s as grassland with a strong woody component near a permanent water source. -

Svensson, and Peter John Taylor Abstract Scientific investigations on the mammals of Angola started over 150 years ago, but information remains scarce and scattered, with only one recent published account. Here we provide a synthesis of the mammals of Angola based on a thorough survey of primary and grey literature, as well as recent unpublished records. We present a short history of mammal research, and provide brief information on each species known to occur in the country. Particular attention is given to endemic and near endemic species. We also provide a zoogeographic outline and information on the conservation of Angolan mammals. We found confirmed records for 291 native species, most of which from the orders Rodentia (85), Chiroptera (73), Carnivora (39), and Cetartiodactyla (33). There is a large number of endemic and near endemic species, most of which are rodents or bats. The large diversity of species is favoured by the wide P. However, these studies failed to completely resolve the relationships within the subfamily Herpestinae. Moreover, the species of the genus Bdeogale have not been included in previous studies. Three genes were sequenced, Cytochrome b, ND2 and Transthyretin intron I, for 20 species of Herpestidae. The results show that the Herpestidae form two clades, corresponding to the traditional Herpestinae and Mungotinae, but with Cynictis included in the former rather than the latter. Within the Herpestinae, the genus Herpestes is not monophyletic. A newly proposed clade groups Bdeogale, Cynictis, Ichneumia and Rynchogale. Some morphological and karyological characters were mapped on the trees so as to characterize the newly defined molecular groups.
