Based on morphological observations with various species of Pagurus, and molecular studies, a new species is defined and described as P. pseudosculptimanus. An overview on species of Pagurus from the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea is provided. Key words: Pagurus, new species, Mediterranean, eastern Atlantic. 1 Introduction More than 170 species from around the world are currently assigned to the genus Pagurus Fabricius, 1775 (Lemaitre and Cruz Castaño 2004; Mantelatto et al. 2009; McLaughlin 2003, McLaughlin et al. 2010). This genus is complex because of there is high morphological variability and similarity among some species, and has been divided in groups (e.g. Lemaitre and Cruz Castaño 2004 for eastern Pacific species; Ingle, 1985, for European species) with difficulty (Ayón-Parente and Hendrickx 2012). This difficulty has lead to taxonomic problems, although molecular techniques have been recently used to elucidate some species (Mantelatto et al. 2009; Da Silva et al. 2011). Thirteen species are present in eastern Atlantic (European and the adjacent African waters) (Ingle 1993; Udekem d'Acoz 1999; Froglia, 2010, MarBEL Data System - Türkay 2012, García Raso et al., in press) but only nine of these (the first ones mentioned below) have been cited in the Mediterranean Sea, all of them are present in the study area (Alboran Sea, southern Spain). -

Barnes Natural Environment Research Council, British Antarctic Survey, High Cross, Madingley Road, Cambridge CB3 0ET, UK ABSTRACT: The development of sessile invertebrate assemblages on hard substrata has been studied exten- sively in temperate and tropical latitudes. Such studies provide insights into a range of ecological processes, and the global similarity of taxa recruiting to these assem- blages affords the potential for regional-scale com- parisons. However, few data exist for high latitude assemblages. This paper presents the first regularly resur- veyed study of benthic colonisation from within the Antarctic Circle. Acrylic panels were deployed horizon- tally on the seabed at 8 and 20 m depths at each of 3 loca- tions in Ryder Bay, Adelaide Island, SW Antarctic Peninsula (67° 35’ S, 68° 10’ W). Assemblages colonising upward- and downward-facing panel surfaces were photographed in situ from February 2001 to March 2004. Assemblages were dominated by bryozoans and spiror- Bowden and co-workers present the first successful benthic bid polychaetes. Flabellina rubrolineata was believed to have a wide distribution range, being reported from the Mediterranean Sea (non-native), the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and adjacent seas, and the Indo-West Pacific and from Australia to Hawaii. In the present paper, we provide a redescription of Flabellina rubrolineata, based on specimens collected near the type locality of this species in the Red Sea. The morphology of this species was studied using anatomical dissections and scanning electron microscopy. To place this species in the phylogenetic framework and test the identity of other specimens of F. rubrolineata from the Indo-West Pacific we sequenced COI, H3, 16S and 28S gene fragments and obtained phylogenetic trees based on Bayesian and Maximum likelihood inferences. Our morphological and molecular results show a clear separation of F. rubrolineata from the Red Sea from its relatives in the Indo-West Pacific. We suggest that F. rubrolineata is restricted to only the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea and to West Indian Ocean, while specimens from other regions belong to a complex of pseudocryptic species. -

This study was carried out, through a total of 271 scuba dives, from 2017 to the beginning of 2020 in four sites located along the Ionian coasts of Sicily: Catania, Aci Trezza, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla. Through a photographic data collection, 95 taxa, representing 17.27% of all Mediterranean marine Heterobranchia, were reported. The order with the highest number of found species was that of Nudibranchia. Among the study areas, Catania, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla had not a remarkable difference in the number of species, while Aci Trezza had the lowest number of species. Moreover, among the 95 taxa, four species considered rare and six non-indigenous species have been recorded. Since the presence of a high diversity of sea slugs in a relatively small area, the central-eastern coast of Sicily could be considered a zone of high biodiversity for the marine Heterobranchia fauna. INTRODUCTION The genus Doriopsilla (family Dendrodorididae) was established by Bergh (1880) and the type species, Doriopsilla areolata, was described from the MediterraneanSea. ABSTRACT The Mediterranean morphotypes generally confused under the name Cerithium rupestre have been shown to belong to two different species. The cor- rect name for one of the species, living in very shallow rocky areas including splashpools, is Cerithium lividulum Risso,1826, and for the other, usual- ly living in the shallow infralittoral community of photophilous algae, C. renovatum Monterosato, 1884. Type material is figured for all nominal species in this species group introduced prior to 1900, and for some of the species proposed later. Orientations for future work in the taxonomy of this species group are suggested. RIASSUNTO E’ stato mostrato che le entità morfologiche generalmente confuse sotto il nome Cerithium rupestre appartengono a due specie distinte. I nomi corretti per questi taxa sono Cerithium lividulum Risso, 1826, per la specie vivente su fondali rocciosi in acque più superficiali dell’infralitorale superiore e nelle pozze di marea, e Cerithium renovatum Monterosato, 1884, per la specie solitamente vivente su fondali infralitorali ricoperti da alghe fotofile. Cerithium lividulum ha una conchiglia robusta con giri appena convessi, coste assiali talora tuberculate e cordoni spirali piani. La colorazione è data da screziature bruno-verdastre decorrenti spiralmente su uno sfondo bianco. La conchiglia di Cerithium renovatum è più piccola (inferiore ai 20 mm nel materiale esaminato), più delicata e snella, e presenta una serie regolare di tubercoli, costantemente di colore bianco, che iniziano nei primi giri e raggiungono il loro massimo sviluppo in corrispondenza del penultimo. -

Cerithiform gastropods possess high-spired shells with small apertures, anterior canals or si- nuses, and usually one or more spiral rows of tubercles, spines or nodes. This shell morphology occurs mostly within the superfamily Cerithioidea. Several morphologic characters of cerithiform shells are adap- tive within five broad functional areas: (1) defence from shell-peeling predators (external sculpture, pre- adult internal barriers, preadult varices, adult aperture) (2) burrowing and infaunal life (burrowing sculp- tures, bent and elongated inhalant adult siphon, plough-like adult outer lip, flattened dorsal region of last whorl), (3) clamping of the aperture onto a solid substrate (broad tangential adult aperture), (4) stabilisa- tion of the shell when epifaunal (broad adult outer lip and at least three types of swellings located on the left ventrolateral side of the last whorl in the adult stage), and (5) righting after accidental overturning (pro- jecting dorsal tubercles or varix on the last or penultimate whorl, in one instance accompanied by hollow ventral tubercles that are removed by abrasion against the substrate in the adult stage). Most of these char- acters are made feasible by determinate growth and a countdown ontogenetic programme.
