Half-title. 30 hand-coloured lithographed plates by Walter Hood Fitch, printed by Vincent Brooks or Vincent Brooks, Day & Son. 20th-century blue morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, covers panelled in gilt, with fillets and a decorative roll, spine in six compartments with raised bands and initials 'H.C.S.' and the date '1961' at the foot, the other compartments with double fillet borders around single large centrally-placed flower tools. Provenance: Clare Howard (Corley Castle, Carlisle, early pencil inscription on half title); H.C.S. (binding, dated 1961). A fine copy of the greatest work on the most beautiful of all the high elevation 'cool' orchids - the genus Odontoglossum - illustrated with magnificent plates by 'the most outstanding botanical artist of his day' (Blunt & Stearn 'The Art of Botanical Illustration' [1994] p.265). IV. 19th-century black half morocco over green cloth-covered boards, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, the compartments bordered in gilt with double fillets, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Provenance: Juliette Clary (inscribed by Bonaparte on the vol. I title, "Offert par l'auteur a sa Cousine Juliette"). A very fine set of the first edition, first issue of this important American ornithological work, inscribed by Prince Bonaparte to his cousin and with additional uncoloured states of the plates in volume four. Bonhome's woodcut Perseus device on both titles, woodcut portrait of the author, 466 large woodcut illustrations of fish and marine life. One folding leaf with illustration in the second part. Late 19th century brown morocco by De Samblanx and Weckesser, covers panelled with gilt rules, gilt fleuron cornerpieces, spine with five raised bands, lettered in the second compartment, the others with gilt fleurons, gilt edges, marbled endpapers. Hand- coloured emblematic frontispiece by John Carwitham, title with elaborate hand-coloured floral border, 100 hand- coloured numbered plates with integral text. Expertly rebacked to style in 18th-century russia, with contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, spines divided into seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering piece. Provenance: Isaac Royall (early inscription dated 16 January 1754). An excellent copy of the deluxe hand-coloured issue of the first edition, second issue of this beautiful and valuable work. Hooker's second work on Himalayan plants containing some of the most spectacular work of Walter Hood Fitch, arguably the greatest botanical artist of the second half of the 19th century: "one of the finest flower books ever produced" (Jan Lewis).
