Bible Talk: Read Proverbs 12:26 We may not be able to choose everything about our lives: i.e. hair color, personality, hometown - but Proverbs tells us there is one thing we can choose - what is it? What word of advice or word of warning does Proverbs 12:26 provide? Why is this detail so important? Real Talk: Reflect on the Digital Listening Guide Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Today we have more ways to communicate than ever before, and yet there is less connection happening than ever before. It’s not always easy to make friends. When or where do you think most people find friends? In Acts 13:36 we read a one sentence summary of David’s life. What words come to mind as you think about David’s life? Do you think of David as being surrounded by strong friends? David had 3 friends that played key roles in his life. Who were they and how did they shape David’s life? Looking at your own life who has had the greatest influence in the past? ...who has the greatest influence on your life in the present? Walk the Talk As you think about today’s study, ask yourself the following question: Do I have the right kinds of friends in my life? If not, which type of friend do you think you need most right now? Ask God to bring the right friends into your life. .

Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season.

“Happy Days Are Here Again”: the Song That Launched FDR's
“Happy Days Are Here Again”: The Song That Launched FDR’s Presidency In 1929, just prior to the Great Crash of the New York Stock Market, Milton Ager and Jack Yellen recorded, “Happy Days Are Here Again.” The song was an instant hit and would remain a popular refrain throughout the 1930s, as the theme of radio shows sponsored by Lucky Strike cigarettes. In 1932, the song became closely associated to the presidential campaign of New York Democratic Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his effort to unseat incumbent President Herbert Hoover. When Roosevelt arrived in Chicago to accept his party’s nomination for president, he entered the room to the sound of “Happy Days Are Hear Again.” The song and its cheerful lyrics matched Roosevelt’s upbeat tempo and stood in stark contrast to Hoover’s demeanor. In addition, the song resonated throughout the nation as most Americans were looking to Roosevelt in hopes that his pledge of “a new deal for the American people” would usher them safely through the Great Depression into a new era of economic prosperity. “Happy Days Are Here Again” has long been associated with the Democratic party, and remains a sentimental favorite for its political leaders and supporters such as singer and actress Barbara Streisand, who has recorded her own version of the song. “Happy Days Are Here Again” is listed as #47 on the Recording Industry Association of America's list of "Songs of the Century". ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Happy Days Are Here Again” by Jack Yellen & Milton Alger As recorded by Leo Reisman and His Orchestra, with Lou Levin, vocal (November 1929) for the 1930 MGM movie Chasing Rainbows .
