MASON 2005 All rights reserved SINNERS IN THE HANDS OF AN ANGRY MOB: VIOLENCE AGAINST RELIGIOUS OUTSIDERS IN THE U.S. SOUTH, 1865-1910 Abstract by Patrick Q. Mason Studies of violence in the late nineteenth-century South focus almost exclusively on racial and political violence against African Americans. While this emphasis is both understandable and appropriate, what has been largely neglected is the violence committed against religious outsiders, and more generally their overall treatment in what was essentially a hegemonic culture of evangelical Protestantism. In addition to the many instances of violence against African American churches and ministers, the South also witnessed dozens of episodes of anti-Jewish violence and literally hundreds of cases of anti-Mormon violence from 1865 to 1910. Acknowledging and understanding this relatively hidden chapter in American history provides us with unique insights into postbellum southern culture and the sometimes violent side of the American experiment in religious pluralism. This dissertation adds to the growing body of scholarship exploring the relationships between religion and violence in southern history and American history more broadly by making three primary contributions. First, it uncovers numerous untold narratives of violence against southern religious outsiders. -

As we thought of all the people in the world who could be called to preside over Brigham Young University at this time, there wasn’t anyone to compare with Cecil Samuelson. What a thrill to be here with you and to know that you’ve been here these days and hours and sessions listening to people giving you ideas, giving you suggestions, talking about your opportunities in life, your obligations, what needs to be done, and what you might be able to accomplish and that you will go home with ideas and desires and recommitment, all things that you would want to do. -

Bates Patriarchal blessings contemplate an inspired declaration of the lineage of the recipient, and also, where so moved upon by the Spirit, an inspired and prophetic statement of the life mission of the recipient, together with such blessings, cautions, and admonitions as the patriarch may be prompted to give for the accomplishment of such life's mission, it being always made clear that the realization of all promised blessings is conditioned upon faithfulness to the gospel of our Lord, whose servant the patriarch is. THE POLICY OF RECORDING PATRIARCHAL BLESSINGS, copies of which are deposited in the office of the LDS Church Historian, affords a valuable picture of cultural change in the church, perhaps reflective of changes in American society in general. In the interests of privacy, however, the church does not allow access to its copies of blessings, unless there is proof of blood relationship to the recipient. The researcher, therefore, must access blessings recorded in journals, those appearing in other manuscripts, and any blessings which individuals may choose to release for examination and publication. The Opening of Hong Kong for the Preaching of the Gospel Take the Peak Tram (or Bus 15 from Central MTR) to the Peak. It lets you out into the Peak Tower shopping center. Go up one level, and walk outside to the area between the Peak Tower and the Peak Galleria shopping centers where there is an old green trolley car on display. Turn right, cross the street to the old stone restaurant called “The Peak Lookout” and take the road that starts just on the right side of the restaurant. Walk about 200 yards until you see a small waterfall on the right side of the path (about a 10 minute walk). Stop there briefly and read the following history of the dedication of Hong Kong for the preaching of the gospel. In 1949, President George Albert Smith commissioned Apostle Matthew Cowley to bless the land of Hong Kong to the preaching of the gospel, even though all of China was dedicated in 1921 by David O. McKay, an apostle at the time. A new mission had been formed with Hilton Robertson as the mission president and Henry Aki as a counselor. Elder Cowley, President Robertson, Brother Aki, and their wives, along with Brother Aki’s mother, went to the peak for this event. In a moment, you can walk to the exact spot where the dedication occurred and read some journal entries about the event, but this is how the exact spot was discovered. W. C. C.001 C., J. E. “Dr. Duncan and the Book of Mormon.” MS 52 (1 September 1890): 552-56. A defense of the Book of Mormon against the criticism of Dr. Duncan in the Islington Gazette of August 18th. Dr. Duncan, evidently a literary critic, concluded that the Book of Mormon was either a clumsy or barefaced forgery or a pious fraud. The author writes that the Book of Mormon makes clear many doctrines that are difcult to understand in the Bible. Also, the history and gospel taught by the Bible and the Book of Mormon are similar because both were inspired of God. [B. D.] C.002 C., M. J. “Mormonism.” Plainsville Telegraph (March 3, 1831): 4. Tells of the conversion of Sidney Rigdon who read the Book of Mormon and “partly condemned it” but after two days accepted it as truthful. He asked for a sign though he knew it was wrong and saw the devil appearing as an angel of light. The author of this article warns against the Book of Mormon and against the deception of the Mormons. The Mantle of the Prophet Joseph Passes to Brother Brigham: One Hundred Twenty-nine Testimonies of a Collective Spiritual Witness Lynne Watkins Jorgensen n August 8, 1844, six weeks after the Prophet Joseph Smith’s Omartyrdom, a meeting of the Saints was held in Nauvoo, Illinois. Brigham Young, President of the Quorum of the Twelve, and several other apostles had just returned from missions. The purpose of this meeting was to determine by vote who had the right and responsibil- ity to lead the Church—Sidney Rigdon, first counselor in the First Presidency, or the Quorum of the Twelve with Brigham Young at their head.1 In the course of the two meetings held that day, many in attendance received a divine witness that Brigham Young was to be the next leader: some Saints specifically state that Brigham Young assured the congregation that “here is President Sidney Rigdon, who was counselor to Joseph. I ask, where are Joseph and Hyrum? They 1. A. LeGrand Richards. Called to Teach: The Legacy of Karl G. Maeser. Provo, Utah: Religious Studies Center; Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 2014. Reviewed by Heather M. Seferovich owerful and inspiring teachers can profoundly impact their students, Pboth in this life and in the eternities. Many of us are fortunate to look back fondly on one or two influential teachers who played a criti- cal role in shaping our personalities or careers. Anyone who is a teacher, whether in a formal or informal classroom, or anyone who has had an inspiring teacher will enjoy the educational biography of Karl G. Maeser, written by another teacher, A. LeGrand “Buddy” Richards, a professor of educational leadership in the McKay School of Education at Brigham Young University. Richards was the ideal person to write this book. His great-great- grandfather is Franklin D. Richards, the European Mission president who baptized Maeser; these two families have been intertwined for gen- erations. As a career educator who has also been a visiting professor at the University of Würzburg, Germany, Richards undoubtedly found insights that some classically trained historians might have missed. He wrote, “In many ways, without intentionally setting out to do so, my career has been steered so that I could be prepared to write this book” (vii). While Maeser is a significant figure who has been acknowledged primarily in articles, passing references, and footnotes—but generally overlooked by in-depth studies—he was first and foremost an educator, and this is appropriately reflected in Called to Teach. Writing this biography of Maeser was a labor of love for Richards, who spent about a decade finding everything he could on Maeser; much of this thorough, painstaking research has resulted in new information, especially about the years prior to Maeser’s baptism into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
