Just before noon my secretary, Nedra Yeates Pace, telephoned with remarkable news: Spencer W. Kimball had just announced a revelation that all worthy males, including those of African descent, might be ordained to the priesthood. Within five minutes, my son Carle Wayne telephoned from New York City to say he had heard the news. I was in the midst of sobbing with gratitude for this answer to our prayers and could hardly speak with him.

New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history.

This allows them to belong to a quorum where they learn to serve and administer in some of the ordinances of the Church. In the April 1997 General Priesthood Meeting, Elder David B. Haight reminisced about his youth and how the priesthood helped him progress. (Elder David B. Haight, Priesthood Session, April 1997) “Those of you who are young today--and I'm thinking of the deacons who are assembled in meetings throughout the world--I remember when I was ordained a deacon by Bishop Adams. He took the place of my father when he died. My father baptized me, but he wasn't there when I received the Aaronic Priesthood. I remember the thrill that I had when I became a deacon and now held the priesthood, as they explained to me in a simple way and simple language that I had received the power to help in the organization and the moving forward of the Lord's program upon the earth. We receive that as 12-year-old boys. We go through those early ranks of the lesser priesthood--a deacon, a teacher, and then a priest--learning little by little, here a little and there a little, growing in knowledge and wisdom. That little testimony that you start out with begins to grow, and you see it magnifying and you see it building in a way that is understandable to you.

Remember—it would be one to put in your scrapbook that you attended a meeting when he was only on his second day. What a marvelous president he will be of the university. He is such an outstanding individual, a doctor and famous in that profession. He helped keep the University of Utah on track for a long time before this call came to him. As we thought of all the people in the world who could be called to preside over Brigham Young University at this time, there wasn’t anyone to compare with Cecil Samuelson. What a thrill to be here with you and to know that you’ve been here these days and hours and sessions listening to people giving you ideas, giving you suggestions, talking about your opportunities in life, your obligations, what needs to be done, and what you might be able to accomplish and that you will go home with ideas and desires and recommitment, all things that you would want to do.

Bates Patriarchal blessings contemplate an inspired declaration of the lineage of the recipient, and also, where so moved upon by the Spirit, an inspired and prophetic statement of the life mission of the recipient, together with such blessings, cautions, and admonitions as the patriarch may be prompted to give for the accomplishment of such life's mission, it being always made clear that the realization of all promised blessings is conditioned upon faithfulness to the gospel of our Lord, whose servant the patriarch is. THE POLICY OF RECORDING PATRIARCHAL BLESSINGS, copies of which are deposited in the office of the LDS Church Historian, affords a valuable picture of cultural change in the church, perhaps reflective of changes in American society in general. In the interests of privacy, however, the church does not allow access to its copies of blessings, unless there is proof of blood relationship to the recipient. The researcher, therefore, must access blessings recorded in journals, those appearing in other manuscripts, and any blessings which individuals may choose to release for examination and publication.
