A., M. A. Denton, Texas December 1998 Smith, Grace Elizabeth, The Opened Letter: Rereading Hawthorne. Doctor of Philosophy (English), December, 1998,183 pages, references, 151 titles. The recent publication of the bulk of Hawthorne's letters has precipitated this study, which deals with Hawthorne's creative and subversive narration and his synchronic appeal to a variety of readers possessing different tastes. I initially investigate Hawthorne's religion and demonstrate how he disguised his personal religious convictions, ambiguously using the intellectual categories of Calvinism, Unitarianism, and spiritualism to promote his own humanistic "religion." Hawthorne's appropriation of the jeremiad further illustrates his emphasis on religion and narration. Although his religion remained humanistic, he readily used the old Puritan political sermon to describe and defend his own financial hardships. That jeremiad outlook has significant implications for his art. Hawthorne's attention to imaginative narration fostered his interest in Delia Bacon's theory that Shakespeare was not the author of the plays generally attributed to the bard. Hawthorne's praise of Bacon hinged not so much on the truth he saw in her theory as in the creativity with which she narrated her attack on Shakespeare. That concern stands related to Hawthorne's imaginative use of Swiftian satire in "Chiefly About War Matters" to forge the footnotes to his 1861 Atlantic Monthly article. Here, too, he valued creative and subversive narration. -

It is only by a studious effort of the imagination that a reader of the present day is able to conceive of the fervor of that spirit of charitable enterprise in which Leonard Bacon was immersed from his childhood up. Born in Detroit in 1802, his infancy was passed amid the perils and privations of a missionary’s life among savages, and his early childhood in the cabin of a pioneer pastor on the Western Reserve. A schoolboy at Hartford, he lis¬ tened to the saintly Obookiah pleading the needs of his native Hawaiian islands, and was presented to him by his own mis¬ sionary father as one consecrated to the work of Christ. In his senior year at Yale, a boy of seventeen, he witnessed the farewell to the first company of missionaries to the Sandwich islands, and could with difficulty be withheld by his dut}' to his widowed mother and her fatherless little children from joining himself to the mission company. Whether he ever saw Samuel John Mills, I do not know; but when, at the age of eighteen, he became a member of Andover Seminary he found himself in an atmosphere redolent of the fragrance of that holy memory. At the end of the Seminary course, being appointed, though youngest of all, to pronounce the valedictoiy address, he uttered, among other memorable words, the following: “A young minister of the gospel once said to an intimate friend, ‘ My brother, you and I are little men, but before we die our influence must be felt on the other side of the world.’ Not many years after a ship returning from a distant quarter of the globe paused on her passage across the deep. -

Bacon was fond of telling how he came across a passage from Os Lusíadas in John Fiske's Discovery of America. Incorporating it into a footnote, Fiske did not condescend to his readers by presenting the passage in translation, expecting, obviously, that they would be able to make out the original on their own. Here is what Bacon encountered. ii The greatest of Portuguese poets represents the Genius of the Cape as appearing to the storm-tossed mariners in cloud-like shape, like the Jinni that the Fisherman of the Arabian tale released from a casket. He expresses indignation at their audacity in discovering his secret, hitherto hidden from mankind:— Eu sou aquelle occulto e grande Cabo, A quem chamais vós outros Tormentorio, Que nunca á Ptolomeo, Pomponio, Estrabo, Plinio, e quantos passaram, fui notorio: Aqui toda a Africana costa acabo Neste meu nunca vista promontorio, Que para o polo Antarctico se estende, A quem vossa ousadia tanto offende. -

Terry and Bacon Family Papers, 1789-1919 A Guide to the collection at the Connecticut Historical Society Collection Overview Repository: Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford, Connecticut Creator : Terry family Title : Terry and Bacon Family Papers Dates : 1789-1919 Extent : 2 linear feet (4 boxes, 1 envelope) Location: Ms 100430 Language: English Biographical Sketch Nathaniel Terry, the progenitor of the families in this collection, married Catharine Wadsworth Terry of Hartford, Connecticut. They had eight children who lived to adulthood. Henry Wadsworth Terry (b. 1799), a landscape gardener who lived in Winsted, Connecticut, married Anna Wright Hurlburt. Edward Pomeroy Terry (1800-1843) graduated from Yale College in 1820 and practiced as a physician in Hartford. Alfred (1802-1860) also graduated from Yale and settled in New Haven where he practiced law. He married Clarissa Howe. Harriet Wadsworth Terry (b. 1804) married Richard B. Post and lived in Princeton, N.J. Adrian Russell (1808-1864) graduated from Yale in 1831, went to Ecuador in 1832 to establish a practice there (unsuccessfully) and eventually taught Chemistry at Bristol College in Pennsylvania. Charles Augustus Terry (1810-1872) married Julia Elizabeth Woodbridge. He graduated from the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1833 and was Professor of Obstetrics at Western Reserve College in Ohio. Catharine Elizabeth Terry (1813-1882) was the second wife of Reverend Doctor Leonard Bacon (1802-1881). Bacon graduated from Yale College in 1820, after which he went to Andover Theological Seminary. He was ordained pastor of the First Church of Christ at New Haven in March, 1825, where he remained until his death. -

Leonard Bacon's Camoes: "Five Years of Monomania" George Monteiro Abstract. The American poet Leonard Bacon (1887-1954) spent more than “five years of monomania” in research for an edition of Os Lusiadas in English translation. Published in 1950 by the Hispanic Society of America (and still in print), his version remains the only American translation of the Portuguese epic to date. Bacon also gave lectures on the subject of Camoes at Harvard in 1947 and Berkeley in 1951, reviewed J. D. M. Ford’s 1946 edition of Os Lusiadas and C. M. Bowra’s book on the epic (focusing on his chapter on Camoes), and published several fine sonnets on the subject of Camoes. He also published “By the Rivers of Babylon,” a translation of what he called “the most superb of all Camoes’s lyrical poems.” “1950 will be remembered as the year of the first American translation of Luis de Camoes’s national epic Os Lusiadas” predicted Gerald Moser. Of course he spoke to a specialized audience: the readership of Hispania, the jour- nal published by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. “This verse translation,” he continued, “was made by Leonard Bacon, Pulitzer-prize winning poet of Santa Barbara.” 1 To this day Bacon’s remains the only American translation, at least the only published one, of Camoes’s poem. Bacon’s work is also, in the opinion of many, the poem’s most satisfactory modern translation in English. Immediately upon its appearance the Harvard University scholar J. D. M. Ford, who in 1940 had published an edition of Sir Richard Fanshawe’s seventeenth-century transla- tion of Os Lusiadas, called it “by far the best poetical rendering of that epic 140 PORTUGUESE LITERARY & CULTURAL STUDIES 9 in our language.” 2 A half century later, in From Dawn to Decadence (2000), the historian Jacques Barzun recommended that of the existing translations of Camoes’s Os Lusiadas into English “the one to read is Leonard Bacon’s, in verse.” 3 Bacon’s translation is still in print. -

The Northern Qlergy and the Impending Qrisis, 1830-1860 HE CAUSES of the War between the States were many and very complicated. The people who lived through the critical Tperiod failed to understand and to appreciate all the direct and remote causes of the War. In spite of the wealth of source material available to and used by students of history and political science today, the last word on the causes of the War has, in all probability, not yet been written. In judging the position taken by the clergy of that day, we should understand that the ministers of the Gospel were human, subject to the emotions of mankind, and influenced by current war-time propaganda. In this study, after setting forth the issues, I shall let the clergy speak for itself on the causes of the sanguinary conflict. The real issues between 1850 and i860 that threatened a possible sectional conflict were fundamentally economic in character. Slavery, however, although really economic, furnished the occasion or the excuse for Northern and Southern politicians to appeal, with obvious effect, to the emotions and to the prejudices of their constituents. It provided the opportunity for the clergymen to persuade their con- gregations for or against the slave system as the ministerial conscience might dictate. It furnished the setting and the characters for Harriet Beecher Stowe's sensational Uncle Tom's Cabin, a book that made many Northerners weep and many Southerners grimly angry. Hinton Rowan Helper's Impending Qrisis of ^America was such a devastat- ing indictment of slavery on economic grounds that the Republican party, in i860, practically used it as a campaign text. -
