Joaquim Rodrigues finished the stage in 20th place, Sebastian Buhler came in 21st and Santosh closed the stage in 36th place. Joaquim Rodrigues led the team standings today as well, continuing to grow in confidence. In a predominantly sandy stage, he retained his Top 20 position in the overall rankings at the end of Stage 3. Sebastian Buhler also kept it steady throughout the stage to retain his 24th position in the overall rankings while CS Santosh tackled another long stage really well to gain a couple of positions in the overall rankings. He now stands at the 34th position. It is still early days in the Dakar 2021 but the growing confidence of JRod, consistency of Buhler and determination of Santosh coupled with the flawless performance of the new Hero 450 Rally bike bodes well for the team’s prospects in the upcoming stages. It was an emotionally charged day for Hero MotoSports Team Rally, as it marked the first death anniversary of Paulo, who passed away after a crash at the Dakar Rally on the same day last year. Motivated by the mission to dedicate this Dakar to Paulo’s memory and driven by his personal resolve to come back and race one more time for Paulo, Joaquim finished the stage in the 13th position. Sebastian Buhler, started the stage well but then lost his way and as a result conceded some time. However, he rose to the task and finished the stage on the 24th position. After nine stages of the Dakar Rally that demanded a completely different level of mental and emotional toughness from Hero MotoSports Team Rally, Joaquim Rodrigues entered the Top 15 in the overall rankings to find himself on 12th place and Sebastian Buhler also moved up a few places to stand at the 16th place in the overall standings. Sebastian Buhler continued to keep it steady and safe with a 24th place finish in the stage. After four stages, JRod climbs up to the 16th position and Buhler retains his 24th place in the overall standings. The event came about after the 2008 Paris-Dakar was abruptly cancelled one day before it was due to start amid fears of a terrorist attack in Mauritania, and then relocated to South America. It was a big blow to rally teams and fans worldwide, and the African Race was created to ensure the original format and character of the Paris-Dakar continued on. Andrew Houlihan says that “whilst the Dakar Rally is the best known rally in the world, the Africa ECO Race is often referred to as the REAL race to Dakar as it retraces much of the old Paris- Dakar route and finishes at the original end point in Dakar, Senegal.” “And we travel through some of the toughest terrain in the world on the way.” The Africa ECO Race is now a world class off-road rally event, equal in difficulty to the much more heavily promoted Dakar Rally that is now run in Saudi Arabia.

    Robe in the Driving Seat for 2021 DAKAR Rally Opening & Closing Ceremonies | 1 Jeddah in Saudi Arabia provided the start and finish lines for the 2021 Dakar Rally, while its King Abdullah Sports City Stadium – 30 kilometres north of the bustling port city – was the venue for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies which included a special show complete with soundtracks by Daft Punk, other cultural performance segments and a host of media events and live broadcasts including the winner presentations. Each of the two events comprised around 10 hours of consecutive airtime in total. French creative lighting practice Concept K was invited by Paris-based Leap Creative Studio and Blink Experience’s Dubai office to create a production lighting design for the two ceremonies. Their brief also included direction of lighting for the cameras and integration of the set and scenic elements and video screens into a single visual picture for the events which were attended by a live audience of VIPs. (General attendance was not possible due to Covid restrictions) Aldo (CEO & art director of Concept K) included 124 x Robe moving lights on the lighting plot – a mix of BMFL Blades, Spiiders and MegaPointes – which were supplied by the event’s lighting contractor, Media Pro together with the production’s audio and video. These Robe luminaires were positioned across a large ground support system built around the stage to provide lighting positions and structural infrastructure for the set designed by Leap Creative Studio, which included LED screens and an impressive 3D scenic model of the striking Dakar ‘head’ logo.

    Media Information SOUTH AFRICANS EXCEL AT 2021 DAKAR RALLY The Dakar Rally, regarded as the toughest motorsport event in the world, by all account lived up to its irrefutable reputation with the running of the 2021 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. At the launch of the 2021 Dakar Rally route, ASO the organisers of the event, described the route as a journey of exploration and more difficult than the 2020 version. This year’s event might have copped criticism for perhaps being a little too tough, but it brought the best out of South African teams, competitors and vehicle manufacturers. “South African vehicle manufacturers, competitors and teams have once again risen to the occasion,” said Archie Rutherford, chief executive officer of the South African Cross Country Series (SACCS). “The results again reflect that South African Cross Country racing has had a major impact on the world stage. “All the South African participants did us proud and the incentive is there for other teams and individuals to follow their dream to experience the Dakar.” On an event plagued by punctures and navigational challenges, it was the Toyota Gazoo Racing squad that spearheaded the South African attack. Nasser Al Attiyah, a two-time winner of the Dakar Rally and Mathieu Baumel, runners up in this year’s Dakar Rally were always in contention for a top three podium finish while 2009 Dakar winner Giniel de Villiers and Spanish navigator, Alex Haro, had a torrid time, and only escaped one stage without multiple punctures, finished a credible eight overall. Shameer Variawa and Dennis Murphy, fifth in the 2020 SACCS overall Production Vehicle championship and in their first Dakar together, had their share of misfortune including multiple punctures and a broken side shaft, delivered a sterling performance to finish 21st overall.
