South Africans Excel at 2021 Dakar Rally Media Information SOUTH AFRICANS EXCEL AT 2021 DAKAR RALLY The Dakar Rally, regarded as the toughest motorsport event in the world, by all account lived up to its irrefutable reputation with the running of the 2021 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. At the launch of the 2021 Dakar Rally route, ASO the organisers of the event, described the route as a journey of exploration and more difficult than the 2020 version. This year’s event might have copped criticism for perhaps being a little too tough, but it brought the best out of South African teams, competitors and vehicle manufacturers. “South African vehicle manufacturers, competitors and teams have once again risen to the occasion,” said Archie Rutherford, chief executive officer of the South African Cross Country Series (SACCS). “The results again reflect that South African Cross Country racing has had a major impact on the world stage. “All the South African participants did us proud and the incentive is there for other teams and individuals to follow their dream to experience the Dakar.” On an event plagued by punctures and navigational challenges, it was the Toyota Gazoo Racing squad that spearheaded the South African attack. Nasser Al Attiyah, a two-time winner of the Dakar Rally and Mathieu Baumel, runners up in this year’s Dakar Rally were always in contention for a top three podium finish while 2009 Dakar winner Giniel de Villiers and Spanish navigator, Alex Haro, had a torrid time, and only escaped one stage without multiple punctures, finished a credible eight overall. Shameer Variawa and Dennis Murphy, fifth in the 2020 SACCS overall Production Vehicle championship and in their first Dakar together, had their share of misfortune including multiple punctures and a broken side shaft, delivered a sterling performance to finish 21st overall. Privateers Brian Baragwanath and Taye Perry, former Dakar Rally quad and bike competitors, in their first attempt in the car category overcame a plethora of challenges including a barrel roll on stage six to prove their mettle in their South African designed and built Century Racing CR6. The pair finished 32nd overall and seventh in the T1.3 Class for two- wheel drive petrol cars, two positions behind Brazilians Marcelo Gastaldi and Lourival Roldan in another Century Racing CR6. In the Lightweight Vehicle class, known as the Side-by-Side (SxS) class in the SACCS championship, another South African constructor is quietly building an enviable Dakar record. Kyalami based WCT Engineering, under the guidance of Stuart Thompson, saw 12 South African designed, and built under license by South Racing in Europe, entered in this year’s iconic event. American Casey Currie and South African born Sean Berriman last year conquered the world’s toughest race in a WCT Engineering designed SSV. This year seven South African designed Can-Ams, represented by South Racing and Monster Energy finished in the top ten with the overall title going to Chileans Francisco Contardo and Juan Pablo Vinagre. Less fortunate in this year’s merciless 4500 kilometre marathon epic were Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings and Botswana rider Ross Branch (Monster Energy Yamaha). Multiple SACCS overall Production Vehicle champions, Lategan/Cummings quickly showed their flair as they settled into the demands of the Dakar Rally and by the end of stage four had moved into the top five overall. Unfortunately, this good form came to a grinding halt when the pair crashed out of the rally early in stage five, fortunately only suffering minor injuries. In the words of Toyota Gazoo Racing Team Principal Glyn Hall, “Henk and Brett have made their mark on the biggest cross-country stage in the world, and we’re looking forward to watching their progress in the months and years to come.” In his first outing in the Dakar, Botswana motorcycle rider Ross Branch showed his class when he won the 2019 Dakar Rookie of the event accolade and finished an incredible 13th overall. His excellent performance as a privateer in 2019 and 2020 secured him a place in the 2021 Monster Energy Yamaha Rally Team. From the start of this year’s event, Ross displayed his exceptional talent and placed fourth at the halfway mark. Despite a heavy crash on stage seven, he soldiered on but was sadly sidelined with mechanical failure on stage 9. “It was an unbelievable performance for everyone connected with the teams and they deserve a pat on the back,” said Rutherford. “It is stories like these that make the Dakar such a memorable event.” After a lengthy break and the excitement of the 2021 Dakar Rally, competitors and teams will now be turning their focus to the first of seven rounds of the South African Cross Country Series (SACCS) in Dullstroom, Mpumalanga, on March 26 and 27 March. Media Information VAN DYK/RUST WINS THE 2019 ROAD TO DAKAR The 2019 Road to Dakar, which was again supported by Toyota SA Motors, saw the Namibian crew of Jaco van Dyk and navigator Michel Rust take the honours, in their Red-Lined Motorsport Nissan Navara. The pair were locked in a tight tussle for the win with teammates Schalk Burger and Elvene Vonk, in an identical car, but prevailed to ensure free entry to the 2021 Dakar Rally. This race-within-a-race has been part of the South African Cross Country Series’ (SACCS) Toyota 1000 Desert Race in the past, and this year saw nine crews enter the Road to Dakar, for a chance to win a free entry to the Dakar Rally, widely accepted as the world’s toughest automotive race. Charles Cuypers, Director of Competitor Relations for the Dakar Rally at the Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO), the company behind the annual Dakar Rally, was in Botswana for this year’s desert race, and was impressed with the event: “The quality of the organisation is excellent, and the many thousands of spectators really add to the atmosphere of the race. But more than that, the quality of the competitors is really very good, and we’re looking forward to hosting Jaco and Michael at the Dakar Rally in 2021.” This year’s Toyota 1000 Desert Race (TDR 1000) took place on 21-23 June, in a new location around the town of Selebi-Phikwe in eastern Botswana. Despite the move to a new area, the race retained its key characteristics as the only marathon event on the South African Cross Country calendar: The race distance was 1,000 km; and the race took place over a total of three days.

2018 Dakar // SS3: More bad luck for X-raid Nani Roma out of the race due to an accident Dakar stays in San Juan de Marcona for a loop Today, after two days at Pisco, the Dakar participants hit the road to San Juan de Marcona. In the 296-kilometre special stage, the MINI John Cooper Works Rally pairing Jakub ‘Kuba’ Przygonski (POL) / Tom Colsoul (BEL) secured ninth place, two positions ahead of Boris Garafulic (CHI) and Filipe Palmeiro (POR) in a second MINI JCW Rally. Orlando Terranova / Bernardo ‘Ronnie’ Graue (both ARG) came 16th. While Joan ‘Nani’ Roma and Alex Haro (both ESP) had an accident at the very end of the stage and were forced into retirement. By finishing ninth in another difficult stage, Przygonski secured 11th position in the overall standings. “The sun was shining virtually vertically from the sky and therefore, seeing anything in the dunes was nearly impossible,” revealed the young Pole. “Furthermore, we were stopped by a puncture but changing the tyre did not take us a lot of time. Later we hit a rock in a riverbed but this incident had no consequences.” Following yesterday’s bad luck – the collision with their team-mates – Boris Garafulic (CHI) and Filipe Palmeiro (POR) had a clearly better day, today. “We completed the stage without encountering any problems,” said the Chilean. Unfortunately we had to witness when we reached the finish that Nani had an accident.” Meanwhile, Terranova and Graue had anything but a good day. “We got lost several times and in addition we had to change a damaged tyre,” Terranova said annoyed.

  • 2021 Dakar Rally: PKN ORLEN and Star to Drive with Przygonski/Gottschalk
2021 Dakar Rally: PKN ORLEN and star to drive with Przygonski/Gottschalk New route, new rules, proven partners - together with their sponsors PKN ORLEN and star petrol stations, the dream team of Jakub Przygonski and Timo Gottschalk want to finish the most demanding rally in the world standing atop one of the coveted podium positions. Elmshorn, 4th of January 2021 – Yesterday, on 3rd of January, Jakub “Kuba” Przygonski from Warsaw (Poland) and Timo Gottschalk from Neuruppin (Germany) started this year's Dakar Rally in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia once again as a well-rehearsed team – this time in a 2021 Toyota Hilux. The rally distance of 7643 kilometres, of which 4767 kilometres are special stages, will be an opportunity for them to put all of their skills to the test. The Dakar Rally has found a new home in Saudi Arabia, after being held there for the first time last year. While the 2020 competition could be described as an initial journey of discovery, the 2021 route will be a far more challenging exploratory tour. The stages will feature a number of sand and dune stretches, as well as very rocky tracks, which will push the drivers to their limits. The roadbook will also be handed out minutes before the start of the rally, in order to test the co-drivers' navigation skills to the extreme. In return, the number of high-speed passages has been significantly reduced, and there is even a speed limit of 90 km/h for particularly dangerous passages. These challenges suit Jakub Przygonski and Timo Gottschalk to a T.

  • Hero Motosports Puts up Another Strong Show in the 2021 Dakar Rally
Neom, Saudi Arabia, January 12, 2021 HERO MOTOSPORTS PUTS UP ANOTHER STRONG SHOW IN THE 2021 DAKAR RALLY JOAQUIM AT 12TH AND BUHLER AT 16TH POSITION IN THE OVERALL STANDINGS In a stage that was touted to be the toughest of the 2021 Dakar, and was made even tougher by the weight of the recent past, Hero MotoSports Team Rally paid an emotional tribute to their late teammate Paulo Goncalves by delivering a strong performance in Stage 9 today. It was an emotionally charged day for Hero MotoSports Team Rally, as it marked the first death anniversary of Paulo, who passed away after a crash at the Dakar Rally on the same day last year. Motivated by the mission to dedicate this Dakar to Paulo’s memory and driven by his personal resolve to come back and race one more time for Paulo, Joaquim finished the stage in the 13th position. Sebastian Buhler, started the stage well but then lost his way and as a result conceded some time. However, he rose to the task and finished the stage on the 24th position. After nine stages of the Dakar Rally that demanded a completely different level of mental and emotional toughness from Hero MotoSports Team Rally, Joaquim Rodrigues entered the Top 15 in the overall rankings to find himself on 12th place and Sebastian Buhler also moved up a few places to stand at the 16th place in the overall standings. Tomorrow’s stage will take the team one more step closer to another Dakar finish, as they will look to tackle a relatively shorter Stage 10 with 342 kms of special to arrive at the next bivouac at Al-Ula.
