Dignity of Labor and the Human Person Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Join us on Monday, September 7, at 9:00 a.m. for Mass at Holy Spirit Church. This is the 126th year of celebrating Labor Day in the United States. These days are also filled with harvesting. Fresh tomatoes, corn and cucumbers are just some reminders of the pure gift of God’s creation. On the farm corn, soybeans, grains and hay will all be harvested in the coming days and months. We take some time in gratefulness for the fruits of the earth and the gift of God in our lives. The Church also gives us a day to celebrate labor. It is the feast of St Joseph the Worker “If your brother sins against you, go and on May 1. This celebration emphasizes that human beings as God’s creatures can help tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won build God’s creation to be a better place for life. It also emphasizes that human beings over your brother.” - Mt 18:15 cannot be simply a means to an end like a machine, but that each person has God given Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass ©2001, 1998, 1970 CCD. © LPi dignity. This dignity of labor and of human person has been lived intentionally in community in the Catholic Worker Movement. Dorothy Day a philosopher and Peter Maurin a journalist helped found the Catholic Worker Movement in 1933 by publishing and distributing a newspaper called "The Catholic Worker." This radical paper promoted the biblical promise of justice and mercy. Grounded in a firm belief in the God-given dignity of every human person, their movement was committed to nonviolence, voluntary poverty, and the Works of Mercy as a way of life. It wasn't long before Dorothy and Peter were putting their beliefs into action, opening a "house of hospitality" where the homeless, the hungry, and the forsaken would always be welcome. Over many decades the movement has protested injustice, war, and violence of all forms. Today there are some 228 Catholic Worker communities in the United States and in counties around the world. We try to encapsulate this as well here at Holy Spirit Church, recognizing the gift of labor and the dignity of every human person, as we gather to worship regularly at the table of our Lord Jesus and give outreach to those in need in our community.
