Orientadora: Profª. Dra. -
Struction of the Feminine/Masculine Dichotomy in Westworld
WiN: The EAAS Women’s Network Journal Issue 2 (2020) Skin-Deep Gender: Posthumanity and the De(con)struction of the Feminine/Masculine Dichotomy in Westworld Amaya Fernández Menicucci ABSTRACT: This article addresses the ways in which gender configurations are used as representations of the process of self-construction of both human and non-human characters in Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s series Westworld, produced by HBO and first launched in 2016. In particular, I explore the extent to which the process of genderization is deconstructed when human and non-human identities merge into a posthuman reality that is both material and virtual. In Westworld, both cyborg and human characters understand gender as embodiment, enactment, repetition, and codified communication. Yet, both sets of characters eventually face a process of disembodiment when their bodies are digitalized, which challenges the very nature of identity in general and gender identity in particular. Placing this digitalization of human identity against Donna Haraway’s cyborg theory and Judith Butler’s citational approach to gender identification, a question emerges, which neither Posthumanity Studies nor Gender Studies can ignore: can gender identities survive a process of disembodiment? Such, indeed, is the scenario portrayed in Westworld: a world in which bodies do not matter and gender is only skin-deep. KEYWORDS: Westworld; gender; posthumanity; embodiment; cyborg The cyborg is a creature in a post-gender world. The cyborg is also the awful apocalyptic telos of the ‘West’s’ escalating dominations . (Haraway, A Cyborg Manifesto 8) Revolution in a Post-Gender, Post-Race, Post-Class, Post-Western, Posthuman World The diegetic reality of the HBO series Westworld (2016-2018) opens up the possibility of a posthuman existence via the synthesis of individual human identities and personalities into algorithms and a post-corporeal digital life. -

By performing a textual analysis, this thesis explores how Westworld as a series makes use of the casual and hardcore player stereotype, looking at the way the series explores the construction of player categories and how it ties these to the dialogue about violence and immoral behaviour in video games. When Jay and Silent Bob discover that Hollywood is rebooting an old movie based on them, the clueless duo embark on another cross-country mission to stop it all over again! 1 CAST & CREW BIOGRAPHIES: KEVIN SMITH (Silent Bob, Director / Writer) Kevin Smith has been saying silly cinematic shit since his first film Clerks, released way back in 1994. He had a heart attack and almost died last year but survived solely so he could direct his magnum opus, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. A polygamist, he’s married to both his wife Jen and podcasting. JASON MEWES (Jay) Jason Mewes most recently made his directorial debut on MADNESS IN THE METHOD, which was released in August 2019. With cult-fans following his controversial antics, Mewes has captured audiences with his rebellious banter against his unspoken other half and longtime friend, Kevin Smith. Since the beginning of the duo’s offbeat work together, Mewes and Smith have continued to build on their beloved character-driven roles from the Jay and Silent Bob series. It’s been over a decade since fans last saw the duo in live- action, but they’re back along with a star-studded cast in the upcoming comedy film, JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT. -

(Jones 94). -

The Whammy Line As a Tool for Fostering Moral Imagination
Session 1661 The Whammy Line as a Tool for Fostering Moral Imagination Rosanne L. Welker, W. Bernard Carlson University of Virginia A central goal of engineering ethics instruction should be to help students develop their moral imaginations. According to Patricia Werhane, moral imagination refers to the ability of professionals to imagine a variety of outcomes for their decisions. Werhane emphasizes that if one is unable to imagine different scenarios, then one cannot assess the risk or apply a framework for moral reasoning (such as utilitarianism, Kantian duty ethics, Lockean rights ethics, or Aristotelian virtue ethics).1 However, we have discovered that students find it difficult to grasp the notion of moral imagination and apply it to detailed case studies. While we know that there are several tools (such as stakeholder analysis) that can be used in conjunction with moral imagination, we have devised a new teaching tool to foster moral imagination, which we call the Whammy Line. In using the Whammy Line to cultivate moral imagination, we have the students read a variety of materials. Because traditional ethics cases (for instance, the Poletown Dilemma) often gloss over the ambiguity surrounding consequences in real life, we use short stories and novels to tease out how individuals may fail to imagine fully the negative consequences of their actions or designs. Complementing the literary approach, we also use several historical cases in order to show students both positive and negative episodes of how real-life technologists dealt with consequences. In this paper, we will describe the Whammy Line and outline some of the texts we are using to develop in the classroom. -
