Now in over 900 cinemas across 32 countries, the Royal Opera House Cinema Season continues to expand each year. Swan Lake opens the Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season on 23rd October. This Season’s line up of opera and ballet includes four new opera productions; Verdi’s masterwork Nabucco with Plácido Domingo making his role debut. Featuring some of the greatest choral music ever written, Nabucco’s premiere in 1842 confirmed Verdi as the major new force in Italian opera. Kasper Holten, The Royal Opera’s Director of Opera makes his ROH directorial debut with Eugene Onegin with British baritone Simon Keenlyside in the title role: Rossini’s Donna del Lago, directed by the Associate Director of The Royal Opera, John Fulljames, stars Juan Diego Flórez, Joyce DiDonato and Colin Lee; and Britten’s Gloriana, marking three major anniversaries; the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth, the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation for which the opera was composed, and the 60th anniversary of the premiere at Covent Garden, is directed by Richard Jones with Susan Bullock in the role of the Virgin Queen and Toby Spence as the hot-headed Essex. For all Royal Opera House press releases visit www.roh.org.uk/press The Royal Ballet opens the ROH Cinema Season in October with a live performance of one of the greatest classics in the repertory, Swan Lake, with Zenaida Yanowsky and Nehemiah Kish in the title roles. The Nutcracker is a perennial Christmas favourite for children and adults alike with its intoxicating score by Tchaikovsky, a Christmas tree that magically seems to grow, a fierce battle between the toy soldiers and the army of mice led by the Mouse King, and the famous dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy danced by Roberta Marquez, with Steven McRae as the Prince. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland will be screened live to cinemas and was a sell-out success when it premiered at the Royal Opera House in 2011. With choreography by Christopher Wheeldon and music by Joby Talbot, this is a special night not to be missed. This exciting selection of world class opera and ballet going live into the cinema comes hot on the heels of the successful 2011/12 cinema season; La Fille Mal Gardée was number 3 in UK Box Office on the day of the live screening, Romeo and Juliet was our biggest selling ballet and Rigoletto was our biggest selling opera in cinema yet. The Royal Opera House continues to lead the way in opera, ballet, music and dance in cinema both 2D and 3D and the many platforms available including digital downloads, CD, DVD and BLU-ray all distributed through Opus Arte. Each year the number of cinema sites in the UK alone that carry Royal Opera House screenings is steadily increasing with more than 140 sites in the UK taking the entire Royal Opera House Cinema Season and over 600 sites worldwide. • The Blake Collection in Memory of Nancy M
The Blake Collection In Memory of Nancy M. Blake BELLINI’S NORMA featuring CECILIA BARTOLI This tragic opera is set in Roman-occupied, first-century Gaul, features a title character, who although a Druid priestess, is in many ways a modern woman. Norma has secretly taken the Roman proconsul Pollione as her lover and had two children with him. Political and personal crises arise when the locals turn against the occupiers and Pollione turns to a new paramour. Norma “is a role with emotions ranging from haughty and demanding, to desperately passionate, to vengeful and defiant. And the singer must convey all of this while confronting some of the most vocally challenging music ever composed. And if that weren't intimidating enough for any singer, Norma and its composer have become almost synonymous with the specific and notoriously torturous style of opera known as bel canto — literally, ‘beautiful singing’” (“Love Among the Druids: Bellini's Norma,” NPR World of Opera, May 16, 2008). And Bartoli, one of the greatest living opera divas, is up to the challenges the role brings. (New York Public Radio’s WQXR’s “OperaVore” declared that “Bartoli is Fierce and Mercurial in Bellini's Norma,” Marion Lignana Rosenberg, June 09, 2013.) If you’re already a fan of this opera, you’ve no doubt heard a recording spotlighting the great soprano Maria Callas (and we have such a recording, too), but as the notes with the Bartoli recording point out, “The role of Norma was written for Giuditta Pasta, who sang what today’s listeners would consider to be mezzo-soprano roles,” making Bartoli more appropriate than Callas as Norma.

  • 70 Festival De Granada Anna Caterina Antonacci
