The findings from this doctoral research reveal that biodiversity-based innovation is a social shaping process that has resulted in large benefits. The cumulative capability to use species from biodiversity gives meanings that contribute to the species shaping process, with organisations and institutional changes providing direction and increasing the rate of the shaping process. -

Pernil Alto was a permanent settlement of this period, dating to 5800-5000 cal BP and located in Southern Peru. The economy was already based on horticulture and was independent from the marine resources of the Pacific Ocean. Nevertheless, some foraging, especially plant collection, was conducted. Currently, the area is one of the driest in the world, but was –based on palaeoclimatic information– much more favourable during the Middle Archaic. These conditions certainly influenced the emergence of horticulture in the region. -

This article is an open access publication Abstract Moseley’s(1975) Maritime Foundations of Andean Civilization hypothesis challenges, in one of humanity’s few pristine hearths of civilization, the axiom that agriculture is necessary for the rise of complex societies. We revisit that hypothesis by setting new findings from La Yerba II (7571–6674 Cal BP)andIII(6485–5893 Cal BP), Río Ica estuary, alongside the wider archaeological record for the end of the Middle Preceramic Period on the Peruvian coast. The La Yerba record evinces increasing population, sedentism, and BBroad Spectrum Revolution^ features, including early horticulture of Phaseolus and Canavalia beans. Stanish, Chair Paracas was an autochthonous sociocultural tradition that emerged on the south coast of Peru during the early first millennium BCE. Beginning as a constellation of independent villages, by the final centuries BCE Paracas peoples had coalesced into two politically complex, non-state peer-polities with evidence for permanent socioeconomic inequality, dedicated craft industries, and leadership that exercised stable control over non-kin labor. Recent research in the Chincha Valley suggests that intensification of large-scale ritualized events was integral to this transition. Indeed, Chincha contains the largest and most labor-intensive buildings on the Formative south coast. These include more than a dozen massive sunken court structures that form at least five discrete settlement clusters. Excavation in one of these structures, Huaca Soto (PV57-26), ii demonstrates that the site was utilized for ritualized processions between the 8th and 5th centuries BCE. Drawing on an analysis of architecture, fineware ceramics, ceremonial offering deposits and comestibles, this dissertation traces the evolution of Huaca Soto from its initial Early Paracas construction episodes through its abandonment at the onset of the Middle Paracas (Cavernas) period. -

Conlee During the several millennia of cultural development in the Nasca region there were many transformations in society that were tied to changes in the foundations, structures, and relationships of power. From semi-sedentary hunters and gatherers of the Archaic to the incorporation of the region into the Inca empire, this paper explores changing aspects of ancient society over a period of five thousand years. Much of this information comes from a long-term research project at the ancient settlement of La Tiza in the southern Nasca drainage. The Site of La Tiza La Tiza is located near the convergence of the Aja and Tierras Blancas valleys in the middle Nasca Valley (Figure 1). The settlement is situated on a hillside on the Aja river side of the valley in an area with good amounts of arable land with fertile alluvial soil. There is also good access to water in this part of the valley, and within the southern drainage, the Aja tributary has the greatest annual discharge of water (ONERN 1971; Schreiber and Lancho 2003:25). ARTICLE Diet and Lifestyle in the First Villages of the Middle Preceramic: Insights from Stable Isotope and Osteological Analyses of Human Remains from Paloma, Chilca I, La Yerba III, and Morro I David G. Beresford-Jones , Emma Pomeroy, Camila Alday, Robert Benfer, Jeffrey Quilter, Tamsin C. O’Connell, and Emma Lightfoot We present stable isotope and osteological data from human remains at Paloma, Chilca I, La Yerba III, and Morro I that offer new evidence for diet, lifestyle, and habitual mobility in the first villages that proliferated along the arid Pacific coast of South America (ca. 6000 cal BP). The data not only reaffirm the dietary primacy of marine protein for this period but also show evidence at Paloma of direct access interactions between the coast and highlands, as well as habitual mobility in some parts of society. By locating themselves at the confluence of diverse coastal and terrestrial habitats, the inhabitants of these early villages were able to broaden their use of resources through rounds of seasonal mobility, while simultaneously increasing residential sedentism. Yet they paid little substantial health penalty for their settled lifestyles, as reflected in their osteological markers of stature and stress, compared with their agriculturalist successors even up to five millennia later. Contrasting data for the north coast of Chile indicate locally contingent differences. Considering these data in a wider chronological context contributes to understanding how increasing sedentism and population density laid the foundations here for the emergence of Late Preceramic social complexity.
