II. Items for discussion at the next regular meeting on 2 June 2017 (LC Paper No. CB(4)890/16-17(01) - List of outstanding items for discussion LC Paper No. CB(4)890/16-17(02) - List of follow-up actions) 2. Members agreed to discuss the following items at the next regular meeting to be held on Friday, 2 June 2017: (a) Progress update of the construction of the Hong Kong Section of ("HKS") the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link ("XRL"); (b) Progress update of the construction of the Shatin to Central Link; and (c) Manpower resources for railway services. 3. On Ms Tanya CHAN's enquiry regarding whether the Administration would give an account of the implementation of Hong Kong and Mainland customs, immigration and quarantine procedures for HKS of XRL at the next - 7 - Action regular meeting of the Subcommittee, Deputy Secretary for Transport and Housing (Transport)2 responded that the Administration would make announcement in due course. 4. The Chairman suggested and members agreed to include the following items on the list of outstanding items for discussion by the Subcommittee: (a) feasibility of constructing a rail link between the proposed Tung Chung East Station and the existing Airport Station; and (b) feasibility of constructing a fully automatic operation railway system to connect the new development areas in New Territories West with the West Rail Line. III. The Subcommittee deliberated (index of proceedings at Annex). 6. The Administration/MTR Corporation Limited ("MTRCL") was requested to: (a) explain why it had taken as long as two hours and 20 minutes to handle the incident, and whether the time could be shortened; (b) respond whether and how the Administration would explore with MTRCL and other public transport operators on opening up transport data; and - 8 - Action (c) provide the recent turnover rate of MTRCL's rail maintenance staff. The Administration/MTRCL was requested to: (a) advise whether MTRCL was required to pay land premium in respect of the shops inside new railway stations; (b) advise whether there was any plan for installing additional lifts at Kowloon Station and Austin Station to cope with the future - 9 - Action passenger flow arising from the developments in the area including the West Kowloon Cultural District; and (c) provide further information on the replacement of 160 chillers, including whether the new chillers were air-cooled or water-cooled, and how energy efficiency could be enhanced after the replacement.     Historic Building Appraisal 1 Tsang Tai Uk Sha Tin, N.T

    Historic Building Appraisal 1 Tsang Tai Uk Sha Tin, N.T. Tsang Tai Uk (曾大屋, literally the Big Mansion of the Tsang Family) is also Historical called Shan Ha Wai (山廈圍, literally, Walled Village at the Foothill). Its Interest construction was started in 1847 and completed in 1867. Measuring 45 metres by 137 metres, it was built by Tsang Koon-man (曾貫萬, 1808-1894), nicknamed Tsang Sam-li (曾三利), who was a Hakka (客家) originated from Wuhua (五華) of Guangdong (廣東) province which was famous for producing masons. He came to Hong Kong from Wuhua working as a quarryman at the age of 16 in Cha Kwo Ling (茶果嶺) and Shaukiwan (筲箕灣). He set up his quarry business in Shaukiwan having his shop called Sam Lee Quarry (三利石行). Due to the large demand for building stone when Hong Kong was developed as a city since it became a ceded territory of Britain in 1841, he made huge profit. He bought land in Sha Tin from the Tsangs and built the village. The completed village accommodated around 100 residential units for his family and descendents. It was a shelter of some 500 refugees during the Second World War and the name of Tsang Tai Uk has since been adopted. The sizable and huge fortified village is a typical Hakka three-hall-four-row Architectural (三堂四横) walled village. It is in a Qing (清) vernacular design having a Merit symmetrical layout with the main entrance, entrance hall, middle hall and main hall at the central axis. Two other entrances are to either side of the front wall.

    University of Queensland School of Languages & Comparative Cultural Studies Master of Arts in Chinese Translation and Interpreting CHIN7180 - Thesis Translation of Short Texts: A case study of street names in Hong Kong Student: Shirmaine Cheung Supervisor: Professor Nanette Gottlieb June 2010 ©2010 The Author Not to be reproduced in any way except for the purposes of research or study as permitted by the Copyright Act 1968 Abstract The topic of this research paper is “Translation of Short Texts: A case study of street names in Hong Kong”. It has been observed that existing translation studies literature appears to cater mainly for long texts. This suggests that there may be a literature gap with regard to short text translation. Investigating how short texts are translated would reveal whether mainstream translation theories and strategies are also applicable to such texts. Therefore, the objectives of the paper are two-fold. Firstly, it seeks to confirm whether there is in fact a gap in the existing literature on short texts by reviewing corpuses of leading works in translation studies. Secondly, it investigates how short texts have been translated by examining the translation theories and strategies used. This is done by way of a case study on street names in Hong Kong. The case study also seeks to remedy the possible paucity of translation literature on short texts by building an objective and representative database to function as an effective platform for examining how street names have been translated. Data, including street names in English and Chinese, are collected by way of systematic sampling from the entire data population.

    Localism and Radicalness of the Hong Kong Student Movement

    Contemporary Chinese Political Economy and Strategic Relations: An International Journal Vol. 2, No. 2, Aug./Sept. 2016, pp. 885-908 __________________________________________________________ Post­Umbrella Movement: Localism and Radicalness of the Hong Kong Student Movement Che-po Chan* Lingnan University Abstract Hong Kong student movements before the Umbrella Movement showed a political outlook of voicing within norm of the establishment, using “peaceful, rational and non-violent” approaches, acknowledging the authorities of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and mainland Chinese governments and recognizing attachment to the motherland China. Today’s new emerging political outlook of the Hong Kong student movement has a profile of anti-establishment, using more assertive means and not excluding radical behaviour, distrust of the HKSAR and mainland authorities and assertion of radical localism. In the last two years, Hong Kong students have undergone a rapid change in their orientation, resulting in today’s outlook. This paper argues that the Umbrella Movement is the key for the turnaround and it testifies to the birth of a new social and political consciousness amongst Hong Kong students. 885 886 Che­po Chan Keywords: post­Umbrella Movement, student movement, localism, radicalness 1. Introduction Student movement is commonly defined as students’ collective engagement in social or political activities throughout a certain time- span. Across the world, participants in most student movements are primarily university students and occasionally secondary school students. The nature of student movement is usually but not necessarily anti-establishment and based on a concern for local society or politics. Student movement, in essence, is a manifestation of idealism. Students are in pursuit of justice, people’s general interests, welfare for disadvantaged groups or other imperatives based on idealistic values.
