At the airport we boarded our bus and drove the short distance to Mandria beach. Although it was already late afternoon in Cyprus, here we had a chance to stretch our legs, get some fresh air, feel the warmth of the Mediterranean sun and begin to explore the nature of Cyprus in winter. Amongst the coastal scrub at the back of the beach we noted some familiar Painted Lady butterflies and a flock of lovely Greenfinches that positively glowed in the low winter sun. The scrub was full of Stonechats and noisy Sardinian Warblers, a chattering call that would form the backdrop to our trip wherever we went. A Zitting Cisticola popped up briefly but our attention was drawn to the recently ploughed fields beyond the scrub. -

It is a predominantly flat land with several shallow depressions, which act as seasonal wetlands after monsoon and during winter its converts into sedge mixed grassland, an ideal dual ecosystem. An attempt was made to document ecology, biomass and community based assessment of grasses in Banni, we surveyed systematically and recorded a total of 49 herbaceous plant species, being used as fodder by livestock. In which, the maximum numbers of species (21 Nos.) were recorded in Echinocloa and Cressa habitat; followed by Sporobolus and Elussine habitat (20 species); and Desmostechia-Aeluropus and Cressa habiat (19 species). A total of 21 highest palatable species were recorded in Echinocloa-Cressa communities followed by Sporobolus-Elussine–Desmostechia (20 species and 18 palatable species) and Aeluropus–Cressa (19 species and 17 palatable species). For long-term conservation of Banni grassland, we also suggest a participatory co-management plan. Recent studies have shown that, the expression levels of common housekeeping genes are varying in different tissues and experimental conditions. The genomic DNA contamination in RNA samples is another important factor that also influence the interpretation of the data obtained from qPCR. It is estimated that the gDNA contamination in gene expression analysis lead to an overes- timation of the RNA transcript level. The aim of this study was to validate the most stably expressed reference genes in two different tissues of Aeluropus littoralis—halophyte grass at salt stress and recovery condition. Also, a qPCR-based approach for monitoring contamination with gDNA was conducted. Results: Ten candidate reference genes participating in different biological processes were analyzed in four groups of samples including root and leaf tissues, salt stress and recovery condition. To determine the most stably expressed reference genes, three statistical methods (geNorm, NormFinder and BestKeeper) were applied. According to results obtained, ten candidate reference genes were ranked based on the stability of their expression. -

Two New Records and a New Combination of the Genus Aeluropus Trin (Poaceae) for the Flora of Iran
TWO NEW RECORDS AND A NEW COMBINATION OF THE GENUS AELUROPUS TRIN (POACEAE) FOR THE FLORA OF IRAN M. Khodashenas Received 20.02.2009. Accepted for publicarion 15.4.2009 Khodashenas, M. 2009 06 30: Two new records and a new combination of the genus Aeluropus Trin (Poaceae) for the flora of Iran. -Iran. J. Bot. 15(1):61-62 . Tehran. Aeluropus lagopoides var. mesoptamica is reported from Iran as a new record. This variety is characterized by the following characters: very short and stiff vegetative leaves, short stem and small capitate inflorescence. A. pungens var hirtulus is also reported as another new record for Iran. A. lagopoides var. repens is as a new combination based on A. lagopoides subsp. repens. Autumn flowers were slow to emerge from the parched ground but, nevertheless, we saw everything we expected, except in smaller quantities than we may have hoped for. We had a great week exploring the wilder parts of western Crete and many aspects of its fascinating geology, history and archaeology. Our success was due, in no small part, to the enthusiasm and good humour of the group, the interesting walks and good food. Day 1 Tuesday 17th October We arrived in Crete in mid-afternoon. The weather was sunny, settled and clear, with a temperature in the mid- twenties and it remained that way for the rest of the week. After checking into our hotel, we made the short journey to the Theriso Gorge, in the foothills of the White Mountains, a little way south of the city. We made a few brief stops in the narrow gorge, finding our first Cyclamen graecum subsp. candicum, wedged into tight crevices in the limestone. On the cliffs, we identified some of the commoner endemic plants, typical of Crete’s interesting chasmophyte flora, many of which we would encounter during the rest of the week. -

Cases of commercially cultivated halophytes will be also presented to highlight their potential as alternative cash crops, while results from in vitro and in vivo health effects will be presented. -

(Occasional Papers from the Herbarium Greuter – N° 1). — Bocconea. 25: 5-127. 2012. — ISSN 1120-4060 (print), 2280-3882 (online). The material collected during OPTIMA’s Iter Mediterraneum VII to the Peloponnese in 1995 has been revised. It comprises 2708 gatherings, each with 0 to 31 duplicates, collected in 53 numbered localities. The number of taxa (species or subspecies) represented is 1078. As many of the areas visited had been poorly explored before, a dozen of the taxa collected turned out to not to have been previously described, of which 9 (7 species, 2 subspecies) are described and named here (three more were published independently in the intervening years). They belong to the genera Allium, Asperula, Ballota, Klasea, Lolium, Minuartia, Nepeta, Oenanthe, and Trifolium. New combinations at the rank of subspecies (3) and variety (2) are also published. One of the species (Euphorbia aulacosperma) is first recorded for Europe, and several are new for the Peloponnese or had their known range of distribution significantly expanded. Critical notes draw attention to these cases and to taxonomic problems yet to be solved. An overview of the 11 Itinera Mediterranea that have taken place so far is presented, summarising their main results. It was drier later and they were rewarded with at least 43 species of birds, including 14 Spoonbill from one of the hides, hundreds of Avocet, a Greenshank, a Dartford Warbler (heard), one very tatty Marsh Harrier and about 6 Pintail. Also over 50 Sika Deer were seen, many of them stags. Closer to home, on 9th March 5 members went to Mayfield Park to look at lichens, where they found several common lichens, the most interesting being Lecanora compallens and L. carpinea. They then visited Peartree Green to see the rare Golden-eye Lichen Teloschistes chrysophthalmus and identified the moss Orthotrichum diaphanum on lime bark. No Famous Five were available to accompany the leader to Lord’s Wood on a bitterly cold March 24th, but he saw four male Roe Deer (in velvet) together and Bog Beacon fungus Mitrula paludosa and False Morel Gyromitra esculenta. Five members tirned up again for a visit on 6th April to Langley Wood, Wiltshire. -

Bare rock faces are particularly exposed to extremes of weather making clifftops even more precarious. Many flowering plants have adapted to tolerate harsh conditions and flourish in places where larger less tolerant plants struggle to survive. The guide identifies the best time of year and sections of the walk to see each flower. Compare your find with the pictures in this guide; although the shape and colour may vary, the pictures show distinctive features which will help you identify what you have found. English Stonecrop Spring Squill Scilla verna Looks: This low growing plant has a cluster of starry blue flowers on short upright stems which appear in the spring. Found:On exposed areas of short, dry, grassy areas, it often forms large colonies 1 which brings a violet-bluish haze to the clifftops.
