g r e g o r y l . g e o f f r o y Gregory L. Geoffroy’s career spanned his academic interests as an acclaimed researcher in organometallic chemistry and a campus administrator at three prestigious public universities. He completed his academic studies in chemistry with his B.S. from the University of Louisville and Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. In 1991, he was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Geoffroy began his professional career as a professor of chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University. He published more than 200 research articles in refereed journals and is co-author of the book Organometallic Photochemistry . Along the way, he turned his talents to university administration, first as the head of the Department of Chemistry and then as the dean of the Eberly College of Science (1989–1997). Geoffroy was then hired by the University of Maryland as senior vice president for academic affairs and provost (1997–2001).

Geoffroy began his tenure as Iowa State University’s 14th president on July 1, 2001. In his inaugural address, he outlined three priorities: to recruit and retain top faculty, provide students with an outstanding living/learning environment, and engage the people of the state of Iowa. As president, he never wavered from these goals.

Geoffroy led two ambitious and successful campus strategic plans with goals that Iowa State would be the best at advancing its land-grant ideals and in putting science and technology to work. Iowa State received record amounts in external grants and funding and welcomed the largest student enrollments up until that time. He doubled the number of endowed faculty positions on campus to 150, and he strongly supported research efforts into biorenewable energy as shown by the establishment of the Bioeconomy Institute and the BioCentury Research Farm.

7 c e r e m o n i a l p r o g r a m n o t e s

Despite difficult ebbs and flows of state funding, Iowa State surpassed several fundraising milestones, including the completion of Campaign Iowa State, with its $800 million fundraising goal, and increased sponsored funding with record-breaking years (including a record $388.2 million in FY11).

Major buildings completed under Geoffroy’s administration included the Gerdin Business Building, Hoover Hall, Hach Hall, Biorenewables Research Laboratory, Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center, Hixon-Lied Student Success Center, and the ISU Alumni Center. Numerous other buildings underwent major renovations, including the College of Design, Memorial Union, and Coover Hall. His decision to completely restore Morrill Hall would symbolize ISU’s land-grant heritage for generations to come.

Gregory Geoffroy stepped down from the presidency in January 2012 with wide admiration from all quarters. Since then, he has continued his professional contributions through service on a number of corporate, academic, and non-profit boards of directors, including serving as chair of the board of trustees of Ashford University.

As an involved citizen and leader, he is promoting peace through international and intercultural understanding and respect. He has established numerous scholarship organizations to ease the financial burden for students, and in 1993, created the Simon Estes International Foundation for Children to provide financial assistance to underprivileged children around the world. In 1997, Iowa State honored his professional and humanitarian efforts by conferring upon him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

s c u l p t o r j e a n n e l . s t e v e n s - s o l l m a n of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, designed and crafted the mace and presidential chain of office used in Iowa State University’s formal academic ceremonies. The complementary pair of bronze and silver ceremonial items are on display in the Alumni Center as part of University Museums’ Art on Campus collection.

The mace symbolizes the authority of the university president. The chief faculty marshal carries it at the head of the academic procession and, by placing it on its stand, signals the beginning of the ceremony. The presidential chain of office symbolizes the rich history and traditions of Iowa State University.

Created in bronze, silver, and tiger maple, Iowa State University’s mace is an interpretation of the campanile. The bronze headpiece features two campus landmarks–the campanile and Christian Petersen’s Fountain of the Four Seasons–and a silver presidential seal inscribed with “Iowa State University– Science With Practice.” The tiger maple staff bears bronze plaques inscribed with the names of all previous Iowa State presidents and their years of service. The mace is 60 inches long and weighs 14 pounds.

t h e presidential c h a i n o f o f f i c e features an image of the campanile on the front. On the back is a representation of Beardshear Hall, home to the president’s office. The columns of Beardshear form the shoulder epaulets, inscribed with “leadership” and “service.” The campanile-inspired links in the presidential collar contain the words “engagement,” “learning,” “discovery,” and “access.” The reverse sides of the bronze sections feature low bas reliefs of corn.

The mace and first presidential chain of office (“Monile Praesidis Maximus”) was commissioned by University Museums and the ISU Alumni Association in 2008. The second presidential chain (“Monile Praesidis Secundum”), a proportionally smaller version commissioned by University Museums in 2018, was supported by an anonymous donor and Carole A. and Roger E. Custer.

i o w a s t a t e ’ s c u s t o m - d e s i g n e d d o c t o r a t e regalia debuted in May 2008 as part of the university’s sesquicentennial celebration. Gowns were created with emblems and colors that reflect Iowa State’s tradition and complement the hood.

The cardinal-colored gabardine fabric features black velvet panels and chevrons edged with gold cording. Iowa State’s beloved campanile adorns the two front velvet panels. An eight-sided black velvet tam with a gold silk tassel completes the official regalia.

The academic costume, symbolizing academic achievement of its wearers, dates back to the famous medieval universities of Europe and England. The ancient scholars frequented unheated buildings, and their chilly environments were an important factor in clothing choices.

Over the centuries, an array of caps, gowns, and hoods emerged in Great Britain and the United States. American institutions recognized the need for a standard code, and the majority of academic costumes worn now are in accordance with the general provisions of the Intercollegiate Code of 1895.

The Iowa General Assembly established the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm in 1858, and four years later, Iowa became the first state to adopt the provisions of the Morrill Act. In 1864, the yet-to-be-opened Iowa Agricultural College was designated as Iowa’s land-grant institution.

The Morrill Act created land-grant institutions with a three-part mission: teaching, research, and service. Land- grant principles defined a new kind of higher education, which extended higher education opportunities to the people of the working classes and shared knowledge beyond campus borders.

In keeping with these guiding principles, Iowa Agricultural College opened its doors in 1868 with a class that included 37 women and 136 men and a new kind of learning experience that merged liberal and practical arts. In the 1870s, the campus created its motto “Science with Practice,” which continues to define Iowa State’s focus on science with practical applications.

Work done in the early days of Iowa State led to what we know today as the Cooperative Extension Service and Agricultural Experiment Stations. Iowa State also was the first public institution to establish a continuing College of Veterinary Medicine and to offer courses in agricultural studies, economics, forestry, and teacher education.

In 1959, in recognition of the growth of major educational, research, and outreach programs, the Iowa General Assembly changed the name to Iowa State University of Science and Technology. Iowa State’s strong tradition of interdisciplinary research is responsible for historic groundbreaking innovations, including invention of the first electronic digital computer and development of corn hybrids. Iowa State is known as one of the nation’s most beautiful campuses, which includes one of the largest U.S. public campus art collections.

Today, Iowa State is recognized as an outstanding public research university that focuses on the total student experience and prepares students to apply their knowledge to solve 21st century challenges in Iowa, the nation, and the world. Our highly ranked research and professional programs and facilities, enriched by our commitment to the arts and humanities, continues to attract outstanding faculty and staff.
