GEOFFROY Gregory L. Geoffroy’s career spanned his academic interests as an acclaimed researcher in organometallic chemistry and a campus administrator at three prestigious public universities. He completed his academic studies in chemistry with his B.S. from the University of Louisville and Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. In 1991, he was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Geoffroy began his professional career as a professor of chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University. He published more than 200 research articles in refereed journals and is co-author of the book Organometallic Photochemistry . Along the way, he turned his talents to university administration, first as the head of the Department of Chemistry and then as the dean of the Eberly College of Science (1989–1997). Geoffroy was then hired by the University of Maryland as senior vice president for academic affairs and provost (1997–2001). Geoffroy began his tenure as Iowa State University’s 14th president on July 1, 2001. In his inaugural address, he outlined three priorities: to recruit and retain top faculty, provide students with an outstanding living/learning environment, and engage the people of the state of Iowa. As president, he never wavered from these goals. Geoffroy led two ambitious and successful campus strategic plans with goals that Iowa State would be the best at advancing its land-grant ideals and in putting science and technology to work. Iowa State received record amounts in external grants and funding and welcomed the largest student enrollments up until that time. He doubled the number of endowed faculty positions on campus to 150, and he strongly supported research efforts into biorenewable energy as shown by the establishment of the Bioeconomy Institute and the BioCentury Research Farm. 7 CEREMONIAL PROGRAM NOTES Despite difficult ebbs and flows of state funding, Iowa State surpassed several fundraising milestones,
