The First Sunday of Lent, from ‘Divine Intimacy’ by Father Gabriel ACA Progress The Great Combat On this day...the Church invites us to the great combat, the struggle against sin which will 100% 50,300 bring us to the Easter Resurrection. After forty days of rigorous fast, while He is feeling the pangs of hunger, Jesus is tempted by Satan to change stones into bread. No one can undertake a serious program of penance or mortification without feeling its discomforts; but that is the time to resist the insinuating voices which invite us to condescend to the demands of nature… Jesus was next tempted to pride. “If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down...and in their hands the angels shall bear you up.” Such a miracle would have aroused the admira- tion and enthusiasm of the people, but Jesus knew that His Father had chosen an entirely different way for Him - the way of humiliations rather than of triumphs, the way of the Cross and of death. Because He had no desire to escape from this way, He resolutely re- jected the suggestion to pride. The best means of conquering temptations to pride and van- ity is to choose exactly what humiliates us and makes us appear little in the eyes of others. The devil returns to the attack and tempts Jesus to avarice: “All these will I give you, if falling down you will adore me.” But Jesus replies, “The Lord your God shall you adore and Him alone shall you serve.” He whose heart is anchored in God will never let it be drawn away from His service by an attraction for, or envy of, earthly things. Two new priests ordained The sacred brotherhood that is the priesthood gained two more on June 11 as Fr. Dominic Bouck and Fr. Jarad Wolf were ordained at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit on the Feast of St. Barnabas, the Apostle. The faithful packed the main sanctuary to witness the two men as Bishop Kagan extended his hands over the men permanently changing their souls, drawing them into the most intimate union any man can enjoy with Christ. During the Rite of Ordination, Bishop Kagan anointed each man’s hands saying, “The Lord Jesus Christ, whom the Father anointed with the Holy Spirit and power, guard and preserve you that you may sanctify the Christian people and off er sacrifi ce to God.” The priest’s hands are anointed in order to sanctify the Christian people. The priest is confi gured to Jesus Christ, our great High Priest, by his sacerdotal ordination. This brings about a new relationship with Christ and to His Church. Parishioners of St. Wenceslaus, What a joy it has been for me to be the seminarian of your parish for the summer! I came to the parish on Holy Thursday, and I will remain here until I leave for Rome in September. Since we have begun to reopen parishes around the diocese, I thought it may be nice to introduce myself. I was born and raised in Torrington, WY by my parents, Leland and Mary Ann Vetter. My father is from Emmons County, and he is the oldest brother of Bishop Austin Vetter. My mother grew up around Menoken, ND, and she ÁCLAVE, ORODUJ NÁSZA is the oldest sister of Monsignor Thomas Richter and Father David Richter. V As a quick summary, these three priests played a major part in my own Ý vocation and desire to join the Diocese of Bismarck. My brother, Steven Saint Wenceslaus, Pray us! for Saint Wenceslaus, Vetter, and Joseph Richter, who is newly accepted as a seminarian for the Diocese of Bismarck, are seminarians. Our family has been blessed with SVAT vocations to the priesthood. In January of 2014, I started seminary in Washington, D.C. at St. John Paul II Seminary. Zipfel, Bishop Emeritus died peacefully Sunday, July 14 at a nursing home in St. Louis while under the care of hospice after an extended and debilitating struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 83 years old. His approachable and authentic nature will be how Bishop Zipfel will be remembered during his time as our chief shepherd. Few people ever forgot an encounter with him and his infectious, ever- present smile. We devote this issue of the Dakota Catholic Action to Bishop Zipfel and the gifts he left through his priests, the Catholic schools, his employees and, you, the faithful people of the diocese. Upon his arrival in Bismarck, he stated emphatically, “I tell you that my acceptance of this call is unconditional—in other words, with my whole heart.” And, that is what we remember about our beloved shepherd from some of his very fi rst words—his deep and unconditional love for the people of God. Bishop Zipfel, having been born and raised in the Midwest, understood the vibrant culture of hearty North Dakotans, blending right in with the traditions of food, friendship and fellowship.
