Materials List

Bring to the first class:

 Linoleum block (1 or 2)

 Suggested cutting tools ( you may wait to purchase tools until after 1st class demonstration) - V-shaped gouge: 1/8” - U-shaped shallow gouges: ¼” and ½” or a NIJI set may be used - X-acto knife with # 11 blades

 India ink

 Assortment of 2 or 3 inexpensive watercolor brushes

 1” flexible blade putty knife

 Pad of newsprint, 18” x 24”

 Razor blade paint scraper

 Pine boards may be purchased from the instructor at cost

 Imagination and ideas

All materials will be discussed in detail during the first class.

Print Shop Access for CE Students

 Access to the Print Shop for any CE student enrolled in a printmaking course begins on the first day of the scheduled class and ends on the last day of the scheduled class.  Like all students, CE students may not use a shop while classes are in session in that area.  All students using the shop outside of class time must be able to work independently with the materials and equipment they are using.  Matriculating students will take precedence over CE students when there is any over lapping need for equipment.

In this course, we will explore making the hand-made fine relief print. Relief printmaking, or a carved into a or linoleum block, is the oldest and most basic form of printmaking. It is a medium capable of great beauty and expressive power, as seen in the work of , , and the German Expressionists; as well as contemporary printmakers such as Jim Dine and John Buck. All aspects of the process will be covered including drawing on the block, carving your design and printing techniques for making black and white and color prints. A materials list will be provided. Shop use hours are posted at the front doors of the Print Shop.

Major Learning Objectives:

1. To advance individual art concepts through an exploration of the woodcut and the relief print medium.

2. To foster proficiency in the drawing and printing of woodcut and relief prints.

3. To promote a broad technical vocabulary in the drawing and printing of black & white and color relief prints.

Course Requirements:

Your grade will be based upon: - attendance - quality of your relief prints completed and submitted for grade - effort - seriousness of purpose - participation in discussions, critiques and the events of the class.

Work requirements:

- Complete a minimum of three (3) separate relief prints, using any combination of woodcut and linocut techniques.

Demo: Techniques for drawing your design onto the block prior to cutting. Demo: The properties of wood and linoleum blocks, including safe techniques for using the tools to cut the design into the block. (Bring ideas, sketches, , blocks and cutting tools to next class.)
