New Zealand meets South Korea: Strategies for film co-productions between two countries A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Screen and Media Studies Department at The University of Waikato by JuHee Kim Year of submission 2017 Abstract This study investigates the state of international film co-productions between New Zealand and South Korea and whether such co-productions are possible, and if so, which modes or types of film co-productions are likely to succeed. The study is framed in the context of the two countries as well as the rapidly changing global marketplace. Increasingly, international film co-productions have gained importance in the film industry paralleling a growing tendency towards cross- border filmmaking. However, the phenomenon of international film co- productions, specifically between New Zealand and South Korea, has not been fully investigated to date. -

GSC Films: S-Z
GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything. -

The cool, clean air chills your lungs, the only sound is the quiet rustle of trees and lonely birds and the sky. The bedazzled night seems to move with glittering stars, with distant galaxies resting in a milky swirl. Those existential thoughts kick in as you stare: what does the future hold for New Zealand? Will this brilliantly starry night still be here in 10 years? What will it be in 100 years? Will we ever settle on those stars? Future pondering continue: maybe the world will become a cultural hotpot as in The Fifth Element (Besson, 1997). It could equally be a technological dystopia The Matrix (Wachowskis’, 1999). Maybe all the cultures will form their own worlds, each diverse and wonderful, like those in the Star Wars franchise(1977-2019). -

This Is Wellington the Representation of Wellington in New Zealand
THIS IS WELLINGTON I This is Wellington The Representation of Wellington in New Zealand Tourism Film from 1912 to 2017 By Diego Bonelli A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington (2018) THIS IS WELLINGTON II THIS IS WELLINGTON III ABSTRACT This thesis analyses the representation of Wellington in tourism films between 1912, the year in which the first New Zealand tourism film depicting Wellington was released, until 2017, the production year of the last case study. It also aims to trace both the dynamics of formal, stylistic and narrative development and the contexts of circulation of New Zealand tourism film. This thesis relies on the textual analysis of case studies conceived for different distribution platforms, selected according to their stylistic, formal, thematic and narrative relevance and to the availability of related archival documents; on the analysis of archival material related to New Zealand film production; on interviews with key informants involved in local tourism film production and tourism marketing; on the analysis of scholarly sources. This research argues that the depiction of Wellington has been regularly underpinned by a set of economic, social and political factors that changed throughout time and that determined shifts and turning points in its representation. More broadly, it observes how New Zealand tourism film was on the one hand characterised by a tendency towards formal, stylistic and narrative experimentation while on the other it was constantly subjected to forms of institutional planning and control. This thesis aims to contribute to film studies in different ways. -
The World's Fastest Indian Press
THE WORLD’S FASTEST INDIAN STARRING: ANTHONY HOPKINS WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY ROGER DONALDSON The World’s Fastest Indian synopsis Anthony Hopkins stars as Burt Munro, a man who never let the dreams of youth fade. After a lifetime of perfecting his classic Indian motorcycle, Burt set off from the bottom of the world to test his bike at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. With all the odds against him, he set a new speed record and captured the spirit of his times. Burt Munro’s 1967 world record remains unbroken and his legend lives on today. The World’s Fastest Indian production information Burt Munro was the quintessential New Zealander. Born and raised in Invercargill, New Zealand, he dreamed of making his 1920 Indian Twin Scout the fastest bike on earth. Roger Donaldson (whose credits include The Recruit, Thirteen Days, Dante’s Peak, Species, The Getaway, White Sands, Cadillac Man, Cocktail, No Way Out, The Bounty, Smash Palace), himself from Australia and New Zealand, is a local boy made good in the world of Hollywood. Anthony Hopkins is one of the world’s great actors (who first worked with Donaldson 20 years ago, starring in The Bounty, opposite Mel Gibson). Earlier this year, the paths of these three men crossed on the white sands of Bonneville, Utah and the wind swept shores of Oreti Beach in Invercargill, New Zealand. For Donaldson this was to be the culmination of a dream he has held for more than 30 years. As a young filmmaker (working on the documentary, Offerings to the God of Speed), Donaldson met a local Invercargill man with a remarkable story. -
Media Release 26 February 2015, Vista Group Launches Charitable Foundation
Media Release 26 February 2015, Vista Group Launches Charitable Foundation AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND: Vista Group (‘Vista’) is pleased to announce the launch of the Vista Foundation and its inaugural program, the ‘Vista Film Marketing Program’, in partnership with the New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC). The Vista Foundation’s aim is to help film-makers learn the business side of film marketing. Vista Group Chief Executive Murray Holdaway says the Foundation is dedicated to growing and developing aspiring film-makers. The Vista Foundation has received establishment funding from the founding shareholders of Vista Group and Vista Group itself has the intention to continue funding support in future years. “At Vista we are passionate about the New Zealand film industry and we want to help the next generation of feature film-makers launch their careers. Being a professional film-maker is about great writing and directing skills, about design and production but it’s also about marketing and promotion, about maximizing the return on investment in the film being produced,” says Holdaway. Roger Donaldson, producer and director of New Zealand classics Smash Palace, Sleeping Dogs and The World’s Fastest Indian, as well as numerous Hollywood blockbusters such as The Bounty, Cocktail and No Way Out, will be the Patron of the Foundation. “When we made Sleeping Dogs, there was no Film Commission and we simply made it up as we went along. When I look back at that film, I’m amazed at what we created, but I also wish I knew then what I know now. Film-makers need to know how to seek out financing, how licensing and distribution works, how to speak to particular audiences as well as how to tell a good story. -
