Santa Monica and 13 other cities, representing nearly 4 million citizens, have signed on to the Energy Freedom Challenge (EFC) in its first year. Each city has publicly taken a strong stand in support of clean, renewable and domes- tically-produced energy. The EFC is also dubbed “America’s Race to Independence through Renewable Energy.” The other 13 founding cities include Austin, Tex.; San Diego; Portland, Ore.; Sacramento; Albuquerque, NM.; Eugene, Ore., Ann Arbor, Mich.; Boulder, Colo.; Santa Barbara, Alameda, Calif.; Cuyahoga Falls, Willits, and Moab, Utah. In an effort to encour- age U.S. cities to achieve independence from foreign and environmentally harmful energy sources, the race challenges cities to satisfy over half of their electricity needs using clean energy resources such as wind, solar and bioenergy. To meet the challenge, municipalities, consumers, government, energy providers, industry, and advocates must work together. “The city of Santa Monica supports the Energy Freedom Challenge and commits to SURF CONDITIONS WATER TEMP: 69° increasing its renewable energy use through clean distributed generation systems,” said Santa Monica Mayor Bob Holbrook. “We are launching a long-term Community Energy SWELL FORECAST ( 3-4 FT ) Independence Initiative that will install energy efficiency and solar systems in Santa Monica The SW swell should peak with size waist high homes and businesses. Opinion Visit us online at smdp.com WEEKEND EDITION, AUGUST 19-20, 2006 5 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Cleaning up the record Are You Ready? Editor: I would appreciate being allowed to have the opportunity to respond to Ms. Karen Hernandez’s comments regarding the “smell” on 17th Street between Hypnotherapy can help you turn Olympic Boulevard and Michigan Avenue (SMDP, Aug. 15, page 4). We have been on the no-smoking sign for good practicing veterinary medicine seven days a week on this corner for over 20 years with never a complaint. We take it upon ourselves to clean and sweep the sidewalk about once a day. Most of the time there are leaves, trash, plastic bags, cans, and liquor bottles on the sidewalk. Other people besides our clients walk their dogs on John McGrail, C.Ht. (310) 235-2883 www.hypnotherapylosangeles.com this overpass. It is a long stretch over the 10 freeway with no grass, only cement. I personally have never seen the city of Santa Monica in 21 years sweep this sidewalk. Homeless people live across the street and under the freeway and there is often trash, blankets, and old sleeping bags in the bushes next to the street. Last week apparently some animal died in the brush next to the freeway causing the smell in the area which had nothing to do with our so-called “sick” clients and their pets. I suggest this area under the freeway needs to be cleaned and monitored by the city. If Ms. Hernandez’s suggestion is to issue a citation, my suggestion is for all of us to pitch in, helping keep the area clean. I will be very happy to allow Ms. Hernandez to help us maintain the area. Perhaps next time the “daily newspaper with issues” should speak first with the veterinary clinic in question or investigate the source of the complaint. We also appreciate Ms. Hernandez for thanking our staff for cleaning up the sidewalk.

Kenneth Jones, DVM Santa Monica Developers are deplorable Editor: We attended the farce called a “public hearing” on Aug. 11. The shady, deceitful dealing of the “Or Khaim Hashalom” religious entity is — in our conviction — a tricky scheme to realize huge profits at the expense of poor, working American tenants and still poorer seniors. The developer’s “hired guns” — Rosario Perry and Ms. Hirsh, plus Rabbi Hertzl Illulian enhanced the repulsive picture. These peddlers of falsehood and hypocrisy demonstrate complete disregard of human values, dignity and common decency. They should never be allowed to get away with these despicable shenanigans. CAN’T FIND A DAILY PRESS NEWSTAND IN YOUR AREA? WE’LL TRY TO GET ONE TO YOU! Steven and Ruth Drew Santa Monica Call us at (310) 458-7737

A historic conversion Editor: The solution to avoid eviction for the tenants in the Teriton Apartments is simple. The city of Santa Monica should give Community Corp. of Santa Monica the money to buy this building and convert it to an affordable housing project. The Or Khaim Hashalom organization can use the money from the sale to purchase a property that is not a land- mark, develop the replacement property to meet their needs, and this is a win-win situ- ation for everyone involved. I urge the City Manager to direct the staff to take the appro- priate action to convert this historic building to an affordable housing project.
