The morphological features of all recorded species have been described based on light and scanning electron microscope observations. Two species posses similar morphological features as already described species and were identified as A. coarctata (BRÉBISSON ex W. SMITH) GRUNOW and A. sinaensis (HUSTEDT) stat. nov. Two species have unique set of characters that separate them from the known species and are described in this study as A. pseudocoarctata LEVKOV et TOFILOVSKA sp. nov. and A. prominula LEVKOV et TOFILOVSKA sp. nov. All recorded species were compared with the type populations including A. coarctata, A. coarctata var. sinaensis HUSTEDT, and A. intermedia KÜTZING. Observations of the syntype populations of A. coarctata give precise frame of the morphological variability of the species. Achnanthes pseudocoarctata appears similar to A. coarctata, but can be easily differentiated by the morphological and ultrastructural features of the rapheless valve. -

Each lagoon has distinct ecological characteristics, and these sites also serve as popular tourist attractions because they are common habitats for migratory birds and are characterized by beautiful natural scenery. Lagoons also have distinct ecological characteristics from those of their associated estuaries, and there are active research efforts to classify, qualify, and quantify the high biodiversity of lagoons. Studies of regional patterns of diatom diversity are substantial for understanding taxonomy and biogeography of diatoms, as well as for ecological perspectives and applied purposes. DNA barcoding is a modern approach, which can resolve many problems of diatoms identification and can provide valuable information about their diversity in different ecosystems. However, only few studies focused on diatom assemblages of brackish rivers and none of them applied the genetic tools. Herein, we analyzed taxonomic composition and abundance of diatom assemblages in the brackish mixohaline Bolshaya Samoroda River flowing into the Elton Lake (Volgograd region, Russia) using light microscopy and high-throughput sequencing of the V4 region of the 18S rDNA gene amplicons. In total, light microscopy of the samples taken in 2011–2014 and 2018 allowed to distinguish 39 diatom genera, represented by 76 species and infraspecies taxa. Twenty three species of diatoms were recorded in the river for the first time. Next-generation sequencing revealed a larger number of diatom taxa (26 genera and 47 OTUs in two samples vs. 20 genera and 37 species estimated by light microscopy). As a result, sequences of Haslea, Fistulifera, Gedaniella were recorded in the river for the first time. -

Abstract The biodiversity of the entrance zones of the Montenegro caves is barely studied, therefore the purpose of this study was to assess the biodiversity of several caves in Montenegro. The samples of phototrophs were taken from various substrates of the entrance zone of 7 caves in July 2017. A total of 87 species of phototrophs were identified, including 64 species of algae and Cyanobacteria, and 21 species of Bryophyta. Comparison of biodiversity was carried out using Jacquard and Shorygin indices. The prevalence of cyanobacteria in the algal flora and the dominance of green algae were revealed. The composition of the phototrophic communities was influenced mainly by the morphology of the entrance zones, not by the spatial proximity of the studied caves. These species were found in Laos, and this is first finding of this genus from Southeast Asia. Almost all species from this genus were described and exist in Holarctic. Many species have restricted distributions and are known from fossil deposits, North America, Mongolia or local endemics of ancient lakes such as Baikal, Prespa and Ohrid. Diversity of Aneumastus species from these ancient lakes is higher than from waterbodies of the Holarctic region taken together.Afew reports of this genus are from the southern Hemisphere (e.g. New Caledonia, Australia, Lake Tanganyika in Africa), but these taxon records are represented by asingle valve only from every region and they require additional taxonomical investigation and verification to understand the full extent of the distribution of the genus. -

Of note among the new records are Pinnunavis yarrensis (Grunow) H. Okuno and Nitzschia janischii Grunow both observed alive, plus Protokeelia cholnokyi (Giffen) Round & Basson and Pogoneis bahrainii Round & Basson seen only in acid-cleaned preparations. Psammodictyon pustulatum (Voigt ex Meister) n. comb., n. stat. (Bacillariales: Bacillariaceae) differs from related species in having a pair of rounded elevations on the distal side of the sternum. Three new species are described; only one was observed alive. Colliculoamphora gabgabensis (Eunotiales: Eunotiaceae) is smaller and more finely striated than its congeners. Lauderia excentrica (Thalassiosirales: Lauderiaceae) differs from the only other species of the genus in having a large, excentric, reniform annulus. Rhoiconeis pagoensis (Naviculales: Naviculaceae) differs from the other two known species in its stria density. Specimens for study were collected from Homa Lagoon, İzmir Bay, Turkey (4- 29 °C; salinity 35‰-54‰) as epipelic and epiphytic (Ulva lactuca L.). The valve morphological characteristics of the 3 species were measured by calibrated ocular micrometer using 20 specimens from each species per station. The valve of M. braunii was 35.15-80.20 µm in length and 12.35-19.85 µm in width, the valve of M. pumila was 13.70-31.85 µm in length and 5.75-9.00 µm in width, and the valve of M. vasta was 31.20-43.35 µm in length and 11.90-18.10 µm in width. The results of Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed significant correlations among morphological features and environmental factors. All of the species display a positive correlation between valve length and valve width, and the number of transapical striae in 10 µm are invariable with changes in environmental factors. Seasonal differences in the morphological features of Mastogloia species were determined by one-way ANOVA analyses. Valve length, valve width, and total number of partecta were the common characteristics showing seasonal variation. -

HARPER School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences, Victoria University of Wellington, P.O. 600 Wellington 6140, New Zealand Diatoms were investigated as part of the world’s first marine Bioblitz held on the south coast of Wellington, New Zealand, in October 2007. Two unusual diatoms were associ- ated with the red alga Herposiphonia ceratoclada. They were examined by light and scan- ning electron microscopy. The first, previously described as »Cocconeis coelata« Arnott ex Greville, is a thick-ribbed biraphid diatom that appears to have an undular raphe and marginal septum like some Mastogloia species, but it does not have partecta in the valvocopula. Instead it has short marginal ribs that support a pseudoseptum. Its solid lyre and multiseriate striae with cibrate pores could be modifications of similar structures in Aneumastus aksaraiensis Spaulding et al. It typifies the new genus Skeletomastus which appears to be close to both Mastogloia and Aneumastus, hence the name. The second is a proposed new Pleurosigma species, P. inscriptura with naviculoid symmetry and a mark- edly sigmoid raphe system with deflected ends. It appears bright blue in darkfield illumi- nation which helped us locate it in other samples from the Wellington region. We compare it with some other Pleurosigma species and consider their diffraction properties. -
