  • List of Fair Game Operations
List of Guardian's Office operations From its establishment in 1966 to its demise in the early 1980s, the Guardian's Office (GO) of the Church of Scientology carried out numerous covert operations and programs against a range of perceived opponents of Scientology in the United States and around the world. The GO sought to discredit, destroy or otherwise neutralize – or "depower", in Scientology jargon – any group or individual that it regarded as anti-Scientology. Instructions for such operations were distributed in the form of individually numbered "Guardian Program Orders", abbreviated as GPgmOs, which were distributed from the GO leadership to GO branches in Churches of Scientology and ultimately used to task agents. Operations Operation Big Mouth was a plan devised by the GO to discredit Nathan Dodell, an Assistant US Attorney who represented the government in several cases involving Scientology. Dodell was believed by the GO to be "assiduously collecting files on Scientology to show (a) harassment of the U.S. government [by Scientologists] and (b) violations of the law by Scientology." Jimmy Mulligan, an assistant to L. Ron Hubbard's wife and GO head Mary Sue Hubbard, instructed GO agents to "finally and terminatedly handle Mr. Dodell. He has been on our lines for many, many years. I would like for you to have very accurate and complete surveys done on him in D.C., and mock up and carry out some very professional, smooth, ops [operations] which will depower him fully." The Guardian's Office later concluded that it would be necessary to prove that Dodell was guilty of criminal conduct before the Church of Scientology could get him fired.

  • 3. CRISIS and TRANSITION Sources of the Crisis the Developments That
    3. CRISIS AND TRANSITION Sources of the crisis The developments that took place in the ideology and organization of Hubbard's following emerged partly as the resolution of a variety of strains and conflicts in the Dianetics community, which existed between Hubbard and other leaders; between Hubbard's desire for a strong central organization and the amateur groups keen to retain their independence; and between Hubbard and other innovators of theory and practice. They were also, in some measure, a response to external vicissitudes: a hostile environment, and a declining market. The break between Hubbard and Purcell was the culmination of a series of strains in their relationship and even earlier difficulties with other coleaders of the movement. Ninter, for example, had broken with Hubbard over a number of issues, of which the financial precariousness of the Elizabeth Foundation was only one. Firstly, Winter found a difference between the ideals inherent within the dianetic hypothesis and the actions of the Foundation in its ostensible efforts to carry out these ideals. The ideals of dianetics, ar I saw them, included non-authoritarianism and a flexibility of approach; they did not exclude the realization that this hypothesis might not be absolutely perfect. The ideals of dianetics continued to be given lip-service, but I could see a definite disparity between ideals and actualities.' He had growing doubts about the possibility of achieving the state of 'clear', and was concerned at the extent to which the effects of Dianetic therapy were simply the results of suggestion. He felt that the effect of the techniques might not always be beneficial to the pre-clear, and that it might sometimes be positively dangerous in the hands of poorly trained auditors without adequate medical knowledge.

  • Scientology's Recruitment Policies Targeting Celebrities
4 Scientology’s Recruitment Policies Targeting Celebrities Stephen A. Kent INTRODUCTION Four years after L. Ron Hubbard noted the influence that celebrities had on the consumer patterns of the general public, he developed his insights into a policy aimed at using celebrity star power to promote Dianetics and Scientology throughout society. That policy became the foundation for a Scientology marketing program that has operated for nearly 45 years and has involved some of the West’s highest-profile celebrity personalities from the entertainment and sports industries. The Scientology organization specifi- cally recruits celebrities and provides some of them with career-enhancing connections with other Scientologists in “the business” (as people in Los Angeles refer to Hollywood’s entertainment-related enterprises). For celebri- ties who undergo intensive training in Scientology’s beliefs, practices, and public relations positions, Scientology grants them a special status within the organization and actively uses them as deployable agents to proselytize to others in society. Scientology’s relationship with its celebrity members has many facets, and this chapter will tackle only one of them. It examines the actual Scientology policies and procedures that Hubbard and others formulated, applied, and modified regarding celebrity recruitment and deployment. Setting aside for the moment discussing what the exact nature of Scientology is—a sect? a cult? a new religion? a marginal medical group?—it remains the most aggres- sive of post–World War II ideological groups to actively seek large numbers Copyright © 2017. It seems fortuitous for Hubbard that the evolution and development of Dianetics into Scientology occurred in the early 1950s, which was the same period that early television was growing in the United Scientology in Popular Culture: Influences and Struggles for Legitimacy, edited by Stephen A.

  • A Selectively Annotated Bibliography of William S. Burroughs V. 3.0
I ANYTHING BUT ROUTINE: A Selectively Annotated Bibliography of William S. Burroughs v. 3.0 by Brian E. C. Schottlaender The Audrey Geisel University Librarian UC San Diego Libraries 2012 II PREFACE to v. 3.0 This third edition of Anything but Routine includes an entirely new section, “Video Recordings” (Section F). Not only is Burroughs’ film work with Antony Balch and others well documented in various video formats, but a number of Burroughs’ readings over the years are likewise well documented. Section F represents a first attempt to pull these disparate materials together in one place. In addition, particular attention has been paid in this v. 3.0 to promotional materials, including: • Press Kits • Press Releases • Posters, and • Publishers’ Prospectuses. These can be found in Section G. Quantitatively, v. 3.0 includes 1,127 numbered entries (and hundreds more sub-entries), as compared to the 1,077 entries in v 2.0., an increase of almost 5%. III INTRODUCTION The bibliography of William S. Burroughs is as challenging as the man was himself. He wrote voluminously and kaleidoscopically. He rearranged, recycled, and reiterated obsessively. He produced across five decades and four continents. He was a novelist, a poet, an essayist, and a correspondent at home in all media. He never met a “little magazine” or an interviewer he wouldn’t share with. There have been a few attempts at documenting the range of Burroughs’ prodigious output over the years—some better than others. I initially conceived of this bibliography as an update of Joe Maynard’s and Barry Miles’ definitive William S.

17 THE SECT: SCIENTOLOGY Scientology personnel. Many recruits first attend a free public lecture or nominally priced Personal Efficiency Foundation Course. These courses are devised to interest the public in Scientology and draw them into further commitment. A P13 Foundation is a programmed drill calculated to introduce people to Scientology and to bring their cases up to a high level of reality both on Scientology and on life....PE Foundation in its attitude goes for broke on the newcomers, builds up their interest with lectures and knocks their cases apart with comm course and upper indoc,...Never let anyone simply walk out. Convince him he's loony if he doesn't gain on it becawe that's the truth... Under the broad heading of attachment the factors which led to the emergence of some initial firm commitment on the part of those recruited to the movement will be examined. From the material available, three bases of affiliation can be discerned: cognitive, experienhal and affechve. By vog1litive grounds are meant bases for further commitment of a primarily intellectual kind. For example, a doctor cited earlier attended an introductory Scientology lecture and found it stimulating, the lectuTer was talking ahout practical life and relationships in simplified terms about three concepts involved. I was tired of reading academic books containing r7 theories of learning which had no bearing on the way one actually lives. I was also tired of hospital psychiatry. r'd done psychiatnc clinics myself in which one saw people for 30 minutes and pre)cribed a pill and never rcally had much contact with them.
