The film consists of actors lip-synching to genuine interviews with other members of the Dunbar family and their neighbours, intercut with footage of a live outdoor performance of her first play on the estate where she lived. Clio Barnard is an artist filmmaker whose work has been shown in cinemas, film festivals, galleries and on television. Her previous work, including several short films, has been concerned with the relationship between fictional film language and documentary. She grew up near Bradford, in the same area as Andrea Dunbar. Tracy O’Riordan worked as a drama development executive and story editor before moving into physical production. Tracy line-produced Song of Songs and was part of the production team on the BAFTA-winning The Queen. Tracy also oversaw the development and production of three micro-budget feature films for Digital Departures, including Terence Davies’ Of Time and the City. the author(s) 2015 ISSN 1473-2866 (Online) ISSN 2052-1499 (Print) www.ephemerajournal.org volume 15(3): 497-512 The comic organization Nick Butler, Casper Hoedemaekers and Dimitrinka Stoyanova Russell Introduction Humour and laughter have become prevalent themes in management and organization studies over the last few decades (Westwood and Rhodes, 2007; Bolton and Houlihan, 2009). This is perhaps unsurprising as joking is a part of all workplaces, not to mention everyday life. Studies have documented the prevalence of clowning, horseplay, pranks, satire, ridicule and lampooning in a variety of settings and at every level in the organizational hierarchy (Ackroyd and Thompson, 1999). But while joking is certainly pervasive, the meaning and significance of humour at work is by no means uncontested: humour is said to serve variously as a coping mechanism, a subversive strategy and a management tool in contemporary organizations. Starting from this basis, the special issue seeks to explore the ‘inescapable ambiguity of humour’ (Kenny and Euchler, 2012: 307) in culture, society and organizations. The role of humour and laughter in organizations has undergone a considerable shift in recent years. For much of the twentieth century, employers attempted to restrict joking practices within industrial workplaces due to the negative impact on labour discipline (Collinson, 2002). Today, however, humour is coming to play a prominent role in ensuring compliance to corporate objectives. This is most evident in contemporary ‘cultures of fun’, which encourage employees to engage in light-hearted and enjoyable activities in order to secure commitment, improve motivation and ultimately boost productivity (Fleming, 2005). Examples of this have included hiring a ‘corporate jester’ to poke fun at managerial pretensions, integrating wacky ‘dressing up days’ into the working week or installing comic artefacts in the office such as novelty clocks or giant inflatable dolls (Warren and Fineman, 2007). -

Claiming Chris Cunningham for British Art Cinema James Leggott Journal of British Cinema and Television 13.2 (2016): 243–261 Abstract: Twenty years after he came to prominence via a series of provocative, ground-breaking music videos, Chris Cunningham remains a troubling, elusive figure within British visual culture. His output – which includes short films, advertisements, art gallery commissions, installations, music production and a touring multi-screen live performance – is relatively slim, and his seemingly slow work rate (and tendency to leave projects uncompleted or unreleased) has been a frustration for fans and commentators, particularly those who hoped he would channel his interests and talents into a full-length ‘feature’ film project. There has been a diverse critical response to his musical sensitivity, his associations with UK electronica culture – and the Warp label in particular – his working relationship with Aphex Twin, his importance within the history of the pop video and his deployment of transgressive, suggestive imagery involving mutated, traumatised or robotic bodies. However, this article makes a claim for placing Cunningham within discourses of British art cinema. It proposes that the many contradictions that define and animate Cunningham’s work – narrative versus abstraction, political engagement versus surrealism, sincerity versus provocation, commerce versus experimentation, art versus craft, a ‘British’ sensibility versus a transnational one – are also those that typify a particular terrain of British film culture that falls awkwardly between populism and experimentalism. Although the program sought to satirize inconsistencies in the way the British media treats and sensationalizes child sex offenders and their crimes (Clark, 2001), it offended many viewers and caused considerable controversy. Over 900 complaints were made to the Independent Television Commission, almost 250 complaints to the Broadcasting Standards Commission, and 2,000 complaints to Channel 4, “officially” making Paedogeddon the most complained-about television program in British television history at that time. This paper examines the nature of the objections to Paedogeddon as played out on the pages of the British national press and contributes to debates about morally acceptable television. Three themes are identified in the press objections to the mock-documentary: aesthetic arguments; moral and ethical implications; and consequences of ministerial intervention. The nature of these press objections served to prevent an engagement with Paedogeddon’s critique of the media. Further, the analysis illustrates how media discourses and scripts can fix and limit debates surrounding controversial television programming. -

Signed: ______________________ Date: ________________________ 2 Abstract This thesis researches the reception of British television political comedy from 1962 to 2012, exploring the continuities and contrasts in viewers’ definitions, interpretations and evaluations of the genre. Television comedy scholarship has privileged the text but this first in-depth study of British political comedy conceptualises television genre as a cultural category, and adopts the method of qualitative historical reception research to explore the different ways that viewers have written about the genre. Political comedy's reception is dominated by discourses of power, and the genre’s comedic references to news and current affairs are consistently invoked in accounts of its effects upon everyday life. The research highlights viewers’ emotive responses in four case studies that place pleasure and displeasure, cultural distinctions, and social affiliations in their historical contexts, arguing that judgments about political comedy’s value, meaning and social effects are related to hierarchies of aesthetics and taste, and their relationship to public issues defined as socially significant. The chapter on That Was The Week That Was discusses beliefs that irreverent comedy could affect British institutions. -

It provides a short summary of the aims and objectives of WP7, a demonstration work package for the PHEME project, and its demonstration studies. The development of the corpora is presented for each of the two case studies together with a detailed methodology of their annotation. Lastly, both corpora with their corresponding manually-annotated codes are provided. The aim of this deliverable is to describe the initial version of the development and annotation of two corpora of tweets corresponding to the first two demonstration studies of WP7.
