Triathlon New Zealand 2012 Annual Report | 44 //Y outh report

A key youth initiative introduced this year, thanks to the support of Youthtown, was the club-based Regional Youth Coaching Programme. This programme was designed to help support or kick-start skills-based coaching programmes for young triathletes. Tri NZ thanks the following clubs and their coaches for supporting this programme: Canterbury Tri Club, Dunedin Tri Club, Hawke’s Bay Multisport Club, North Harbour Tri Club, Pohutukawa Coast Endurance Sports Club, Southland Tri Club, Taranaki Tri Club, Tauranga Tri Club, Tri-Sport Taupo, and Wellington Tri Club. It is hoped that with the continued support of Youthtown this programme will grow in late 2012 and through into 2013.

Two Youth Academy athletes made the jump to the High Performance (HP) Programme in the past 12 months. Elise Salt and Sam Ward (both Auckland) achieved outstanding results last summer, which led to inclusion in the HP development squad. Congratulations to both triathletes, who won their respective Contact National Schools titles, and in particular to Scott Hotham for the coaching support he has provided to Elise.

And while on the subject of the Youth Academy, Tri NZ acknowledges the recently acquired support of SUBWAY®. Tri NZ is thrilled to have SUBWAY® as the Tri NZ National Youth Academy partner in 2012/13. As a ‘healthy’ brand, Tri NZ believes SUBWAY® is a great fit for the academy and is proud to be associated with them.

Lastly, it is important to acknowledge the support provided to Tri NZ by the Youth Advisory Group. The following people provide an important link into the youth triathlon community: Axel Reiser, Cam Durno, Conor Jones (student), Mark Cornaga, Peter Ellis, Rick Wells, Rob Dallimore, and Sid Cumming.
