Digital Gaming Industry in Global-Local Crossings: Comparative Study of UK, China and Brazil
Digital Gaming Industry in Global-Local Crossings: Comparative Study of UK, China and Brazil Abstract Clustering is a common phenomenon in digital gaming industry where businesses can benefit from local concentration of talents, spill-over events, resources recycling activities, formal or informal networks formed (Pilon and Tremblay 2013; Ruggill et al. 2016). In addition, digital gaming industry also possess a born-global nature (Gomez and Gonzalez-Perez 2015). Reflecting on the global-local structure, a conceptual framework on digital gaming industry ecosystem is proposed in this paper. A comparative analysis is performed against the digital gaming industry in UK, China and Brazil. As the initial stage of the project, the analysis focuses on the similarities and differences of the digital gaming industry from perspectives such as policy, culture, funding, talents, market, infrastructure and other supports. Keywords: Entrepreneurial Ecosystem, Digital Gaming, Business Growth, UK, Brazil, China 1. Introduction When video game Grand Theft Auto V came out in September 2013, it quickly broke six Guinness world records including the highest revenue generated within 24 hours ($815.7 million) and the fastest entertainment property to reach $1 billion in sales (within three days of releasing) which were previously held by blockbuster movies like The Avengers and Avatar (Lynch 2013). This achievement is a manifestation of the growth in the digital gaming industry: since mid-1980s, the industry has grown annually by between 10% and 15% (Zackariasson and Wilson 2010; Marchand and Hennig-Thurau 2013; Newzoo 2018). In comparison, the estimated compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2018 and 2023 for global entertainment and media industry, which the digital gaming industry is part of, is at 4.3% (PwC 2019). -

Dear a & S, I Would Like to Reply to Lain Mackenzie's Letter in the Last Issue
SEPTEMBER 1993 Dear A & S, I would like to reply to lain Mackenzie's letter in the last issue. He claimed that my review of ULTIMA UNDERWORLD II was "very silly" because I had marked it down after finding a bug. This is not quite accurate, so I think I should set the record straight. Fi rstly, I did not refrain from awarding the game three stars because of the bug. I realise that this was the impression given by my review, but I'm afraid this comes down to the way my copy was edited. In the original copy there was no paragraph break before the sentence relating to the bug. The sentence which starts, "Consequently I have awarded UNDERWORLD II two stars rather than three," refers not just to the bug but to everything I mentioned in the previous paragraph as well. I am always extremely cautious when awarding a maximum score, and usually only give it to games which are ground-breaking or have something to offer which other games lack. UNDERWORLD II is very good, but does not meet those criteria. The first UNDERWORLD was sufficiently different to anything else around at the time to merit that mark, but the sequel is just more of the same. Remember also that there are many people to whom it does not appeal, and wouldn't consider it a "must in their collection." As for the bug itself, I found it very insulting that lain assumed that he knew what the bug was and passed judgement on that basis. -

Video Games Production Networks: value capture, power relations and embeddedness GPN Working Paper 10 September 2004 Working paper prepared as part of the ERSC Research Project R000238535: Making the Connections: Global Production Networks in Europe and East Asia. Not to be quoted without the prior permission of the project team. 1 Video Games Production Networks: value capture, power relations and embeddedness Abstract This paper has two main aims. First, to conceptualise the production networks of the video games industry through an examination of its evolution into a multi-million dollar industry. Second, to use the video games industry to demonstrate the utility of Global Production Network approaches to understanding the geographically uneven impacts of processes of globalisation. In particular, three key notions of value, power and embeddedness are used to reveal the most powerful actors in the production network, how they maintain and exercise their power, and how the organisation of production is manipulated as a result. It is argued that while hardware production is organised by console manufacturers using truly global sourcing strategies, the production of software is far more complex. In fact, software production networks are bounded within three major economic regions – Western Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. This paper seeks to explain how and why this has occurred. 2 1. Introduction The video games industry1 was born during the early 1960’s and has rapidly, and almost continuously, grown in size and scope ever since. It is estimated that the industry was worth around $23.2 billion in 2003, and is predicted to reach $33.4 billion in 2008 (DFC Intelligence, 2004). -
