Or to be more precise: on the winding roads of the Black Forest that tempt Esslinger and his 911 out expert such as him think of the new of the house, even in these conditions. But who is this man, who not only Panamera 4S? Let’s find out. treats himself to the luxury of two homes? In his native Black Forest and in Los Gatos, California, he even has the exact same 911 Cabriolet in his garage.

Let’s look at the hard facts: Hartmut Esslinger is the founder of the design studio frog design and creator of some of the most important design classics of the 20th century. Just two examples: the WEGA Concept 51K compact hi-fi system, that is not just on display in his living room, but also in New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

And, of course, the MacIntosh of 1984, the original version of the early design language of Apple®, which he developed side by side with his friend Steve Jobs. A milestone in Esslinger’s career – and in design history.

26 27 >> Form follows emotion <<

has character.” What does Esslinger find so appealing about the 911 that he has – in his own words – been happily married to it for more than three decades? In addition to its sporty character, it is primarily the shape of the 911 that really attracted Esslinger. And it all began when he was a young man: “There were these fantastic little cars that everyone was drawn to as they drove down the road. They always stood out – quite simply, Porsche design has character.”

“Innovation is provocation.” He has never been mainstream, but always close to the user. Obsessed with technology, without losing sight of emotionality. Focused on maximum profit, but also on maximum sustainability.

He’s well aware that he creates quite a stir in the boardroom: “Innovation is provocation. People love familiar thought patterns. It’s no wonder, therefore, that new things are always met with some initial resistance. Standing up to this resistance – that’s what ultimately takes courage. And what distinguishes a good designer from a bad one.”

We are convinced that our designers are among the good ones. We’re therefore happy for Esslinger to take a very close look at the new Panamera – sealed off in a secret location in San Francisco, long before the general public get to see it.

“Quite a change.” Esslinger intently approaches the covered Panamera. He chooses his steps as he walks around the vehicle. Finally, he begins to unveil the car – carefully, but with the purposefulness you’d expect from him. With every new detail he notices, a spontaneous approval breaks through his otherwise focused silence.

The Matrix LED main headlights, for example: “The headlights are cool – quite a change.” “Cool” is a word that comes up fairly often in this rendezvous between designer and design object.

It is his way of showing his approval of a new idea. The paint finish in Sapphire Blue Metallic? “Cool.” The geometry of the lights at the rear with their narrow lines and illuminated rear strip panel? “Yes, that looks good!” The rear spoiler that only extends when it’s really needed? “It’s really smart that the car looks good when it’s moving and when stationary. The spoiler is nicely integrated. Cool.”

There are, however, two things that he is not so keen on. “Uncool”, as it were. Number one is down to the guidelines of modern engine construction: when you look under the bonnet, you can only just make out the heart of the Panamera. “Unfortunately, you can’t see much of it anymore.” Number two, on the other hand, is a very German problem: “The number plate is not great. It’s much too large and the font’s not good either.” In some respects, design simply has to follow the powers-that-be.

“Simplicity is a unique selling point.” Esslinger likes the fact that the Porsche designers didn’t go too far. That they resisted the temptation to create a status symbol with a big radiator grille – of which there is certainly no shortage in this class. Ultimately, humility is one of the key virtues of the designer: “You have to remain humble. Normal.” This also means retaining the harmonious, flowing contours that have always been characteristic of a Porsche: “Simplicity is a unique selling point. Designers always want to create something new, but the art lies in combining the innovative with tradition.”

“It’s a Porsche.” As he stands back and takes in the Panamera as a whole, Esslinger whispers: “The Porsche design idiom is instantly recognisable. Wings higher than the bonnet, purposeful rear wings, the classic Porsche rear window – the rear is sexy. The car appears wider, I like that. “As someone for whom the 911 is the epitome of vehicle design, he then has one final compliment for the Panamera: “It’s a Porsche.” And what a Porsche!

The main objective of the event is to help you discover how to control the driving dynamics of your vehicle – with no intervention from electronic aids.

On our Master RSR course, you will learn how to drive safely in the 911 GT3 Cup vehicles, for instance. To ensure faster learning success, you work in small groups with individual support and guidance. The Porsche Sport Driving School programme is extremely diverse and flexible. The only fixed component of our training: enjoyment at the wheel.

Our 2017 training calendar and an overview of all training circuits for the year ahead will be available from the end of December 2016 in our Porsche Driving Experience online shop.

If you have any questions about the Porsche Sport Driving School or are interested in making a booking, please contact us on:
