More impor- tantly, the artist himself favored a formalist interpretation since the late 1930s, which has all but precluded historical approaches to his work except for a few notable exceptions.2 The critic Cesare Brandi, who inaugurated the formalist discourse on Morandi, wrote in 1939 that “nothing is less abstract, less uproot- ed from the world, less indifferent to pain, less deaf to joy than this painting, which apparently retreats to the margins of life and interests itself, withdrawn, in dusty kitchen cupboards.”3 In order to further remove Morandi from the 1.

Although Colonna folded after only five issues, during its run the periodical served as a vehicle for Savinio to actively contribute to the revival of Italian culture as well as the movement around the “uomo nuovo italiano,” which was promoted by Fascism in the so-called “years of consent.” Crucial to confronting the delicate relationship of Alberto Savinio to fascism in the early thirties is the consideration of his decision to establish Colonna (figure 1), a monthly journal of art and culture that was partially in line with the cultural direction being promoted by Benito Mussolini. An important date in this history is 1933, the year in which Savinio moved to Italy with his family after several years in Paris. The Italy of the early thirties was very different from the country Savinio had left in 1926. In fact, Mussolini was pursuing the total “renovation” of the Italian people in his attempt to create “the new fascist man,” a protagonist for both the Mediterranean and Europe.

An Italian painter from an old family in Constantinople, perfectly cosmopolitan, Chirico was one of the great figures of the Paul Guillaume gallery, which represented him until the 1930s. And the well-known episode of André Breton discovering in the gallery window the painting Le Revenant (The Child's Brain), which crystallized his idea of a metaphysical painting, or the homage that Picasso painted in 1915 through his painting, The Man Sitting with the Bowler Hat, remind us of the importance of this artist for modern art. SEE THE PRIVATE VISIT Today, although his works do not appear in the collections of the Musée de l'Orangerie, it seemed important to return to the history of this meeting between the artist and Paris, between the painter and Apollinaire, and Paul Guillaume, during his first stay in Paris, between 1911 and 1915, when he conceived and painted the very heart of his metaphysical work. Born in Greece and trained in the melting pot of classical culture and late German Romanticism, Chirico developed the foundations of a new artistic conception alongside his younger brother Alberto Savinio.

Through the autobiographical yet fantastic narrative of his “homecoming” to native Greece during WWI, Savinio represents the impossibility of the founding myth of Western civilization, the original unity that supports all metaphysical systems from Plato onwards. Through the encounter with the ambiguous figure of the hermaphrodite in the book’s epilogue, he advocates for the unfeasibility of a unified language before Babel and the fundamental truth this deceptive myth conceals—constitutional ontological multiplicity. Franco Baldasso is Director of the Italian Program at Bard College, NY, where he is Assistant Professor of Italian Studies. In his research, Baldasso examines the complex relations between Fascism and Modernism, the legacy of political violence in Italy, and finally the idea of the Mediterranean in modern and contemporary aesthetics. Featuring: the Macchiaioli art movement in Tuscany (often compared with French Impressionism); Italian Futurism that in the early 20thcentury greatly contributed to the International Avant-garde; Giorgio De Chirico’s Metaphysical Art that influenced European Surrealism. After World War I (1914-1918) there was a “Return to Order” that led to the art of the Fascist Era under Italy’s Mussolini dictatorship (1922-1944). Painting, sculpture, architecture of this long and complex period will be delineated with an emphasis on the latter. In 1945 after the Fall of Fascism and the end of World War II Italy became a democratic Republic and also the arts enjoyed new freedom that gave birth to a great season of international achievements in the post-war time. Renato Guttuso’s politically motivated figurative paintings were countered by Alberto Burri’s and Lucio Fontana’s abstract-formless art that opened the way to the neo-avantgardes of the 1960-1970s, among which the Arte Povera movement internationally stood out. The course also includes a selection of contemporary Italian artists and it offers an overview of the principal Modern Art museums and art collections of Italy.

Hermaphrodito takes to the extreme the etymological research launched in Nietzsche’s The Genealogy of Morals, together with Savinio’s reflection on “irony” as a key feature of modern art. Through the autobiographical yet fantastic narrative of “homecoming” to his native Greece during WWI, Savinio represents the impossibility of a narrative that is founding myth of Western civilization, the original unity that supports all metaphysical systems from Plato onwards. Hermaphrodito features said “homecoming” as both an existential and linguistic impossibility. Introduction: “Everything I am was born there” In his 1939 Anthologie de l’humour noir (Anthology of black humor), André Breton famously assigned to the de Chirico brothers a crucial position as surrealism’s forefathers, for their unique understanding of the modernist mythmaking creative tension: “The whole, as-yet-unformed modern myth rests at its origins on two bodies of work that are almost undistinguishable in spirit – by Alberto Savinio and his brother, Giorgio de Chirico – and that reached their culminating 1 point just before the war of 1914.” Focusing then on Savinio, Breton singled out his “heroic” years in Paris before the Great War. However, Savinio’s multifold production spans the first half of the twentieth century.

    233 GIORGIO DE CHIRICO AND THE EXHIBITIONS OF THE “NOVECENTO ITALIANO” Franco Ragazzi A letter from Giorgio de Chirico regarding his participation in the Prima mostra del Novecento Italiano (First exhibition of the Novecento Italiano), organised in Milan in 1926, allows us to under- stand more about relations between the Master of Metaphysics and the group led by Margherita Sarfatti, than any other study carried out until now. As well as contributing to the definition of a modern ‘Italian’ aesthetic which was purist, cerebral and anti-naturalist, made up of values that are absolute, severe and moralising, inspired by the Primitives, one of the major concerns of Sarfatti and the artists of the steering committee of the Novecento was that of widening the essentially Milanese original group to make it a national reality, and to make the 1926 exhibition a great artistic and political event. This explains the organisational work carried out principally by the secretary of the steering committee, Alberto Salietti, to increase the exhibitors through a network of artists who were ‘delegates’ of the groups and the regional groups, a dense epistolary and numerous ‘missions’ such as the ones to meet Morandi in Bologna, Soffici and de Grada in Florence, Trombadori and Socrate (after the split with Ferrazzi) in Rome, Casorati in Turin, and Tozzi in Paris.1 Sarfatti and the Committee’s aim was to conquer a substantially political significance and recog- nition in the governing of art and its market. This vision explains relations with Mussolini and the presence of Il Duce at the inauguration of the exhibition with the consequent great attention from the press.

    Evdokia Meleziadou Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece GIORGIO DE CHIRICO AND ALBERTO SAVINIO. BROTHERS AND ARGONAUTS Giorgio and his brother Andrea De Chirico, polyedric artists, have shaped in the twentieth century the prototype of the uomo universale who is at the same time painter, writer, musician and, as for spirituality and intuitional thought, philosopher. Born in Greece, the two brothers not only preserved a good memory of their homeland as the mythical place of the childhood – remaining Italians or rather citizens of the world, a-patrides (that is to say ‘without fatherland’) travelers-nomads – but also protected it in their subconscious as source of inspiration of the figurative world where they created the mythical dimension of the symbols defining the coordinates of this magic space. Giorgio de Chirico’s metaphysical painting enables him to isolate the forms and the objects of the external world from their current meaning to a dimension which is not oneiric, but to an ecstatic world which is dominated by intuition and by pure cognition within a circularly pendulous time which bends and then comes back to the dominion of the present. Andrea de Chirico, who would take in Paris the pseudonym of Alberto Savinio, will share with Giorgio the same experiences from Munich till Paris, but will handle them differently at any rate, despite the common literary, philosophical and figurative substratum. Humanistic education, Greek myth, enygmaticism, journalism and writing, all their multilayered development is characterised by the plurality and the coexistence of various influences. Classical temples, centaurs, Homeric and tragic heroes, Dioscurs and Argonauts, ancient philosophers, Olympian gods, horses and mannequin-like figures, warriors, trophies, muses, surrealistic metamorphoses, childhood, the romantic and academic tradition of the nineteenth century Munich, the Dedalus: A Ilha e os Mapas da Cultura vanguard of Paris, the surrealists, the futurists and the classical Italian art.
