WHC Nomination Documentation File Name: 1033.pdf UNESCO Region: EUROPE AND THE NORTH AMERICA __________________________________________________________________________________________________ SITE NAME: Historic Centre of Vienna DATE OF INSCRIPTION: 16th December 2001 STATE PARTY: AUSTRIA CRITERIA: C (ii)(iv)(vi) DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE: Excerpt from the Report of the 25th Session of the World Heritage Committee The Committee inscribed the Historic Centre of Vienna on the World Heritage List under criteria (ii), (iv), and (vi): Criterion (ii): The urban and architectural qualities of the Historic Centre of Vienna bear outstanding witness to a continuing interchange of values throughout the second millennium. Criterion (iv): Three key periods of European cultural and political development - the Middle Ages, the Baroque period, and the Gründerzeit - are exceptionally well illustrated by the urban and architectural heritage of the Historic Centre of Vienna. Criterion (vi): Since the 16th century Vienna has been universally acknowledged to be the musical capital of Europe. While taking note of the efforts already made for the protection of the historic town of Vienna, the Committee recommended that the State Party undertake the necessary measures to review the height and volume of the proposed new development near the Stadtpark, east of the Ringstrasse, so as not to impair the visual integrity of the historic town. Furthermore, the Committee recommended that special attention be given to continuous monitoring and control of any changes to the morphology of the historic building stock. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS Vienna developed from early Celtic and Roman settlements into a Medieval and Baroque city, the capital of the Austro- Hungarian Empire. It played an essential role as a leading European music centre, from the great age of Viennese Classicism through the early part of the 20th century.

  • Parliament in Its Temporary Accommodation SANIERUNG PARLAMENT at the Centre of the Republic
Parliament in its temporary accommodation SANIERUNG PARLAMENT At the centre of the Republic In summer 2017 the time had arrived: Parliament moved to the Hof- burg Palace and thus made way for the refurbishment of the histori- cal building on the well-known Ringstraße boulevard in Vienna. This meant that the area around the Hofburg Palace would be the main setting for parliamentary activities in the coming years. The National Council (the first chamber of Parliament) and the Federal Council (the second chamber) are now meeting in the Große Redoutensaal (Grand Ballroom) of the Palace, which has been converted for this purpose. The decision on the location of the temporary premises also has great symbolic significance: Parliament’s presence in the very centre of the capital and the Republic is a statement about its importance and ensures the heart of democracy in Austria remains visible and also accessible to the population during the period of the renovation work. • HISTORY the HOFBURG SITE a Distinctive Feature of the Hofburg
HISTORY THE HOFBURG SITE A distinctive feature of the Hofburg site is its unusual continuity. The original Hofburg, or Castle of the Court, was founded by an emperor of the Staufer dynasty. The plans of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen to govern Austria as a territory directly under the Emperor’s authority made it necessary to erect a city castle within Vienna in 1237. A quadrangular castle with flanking corner towers based on the southern Italian model was subsequently put under construction until the mid-13th century. But the castle itself was not completed either during the reign of Frederick II or during the last few years of the reign of Frederick the Quarrelsome. The quadrangular castle was most probably completed by the Bohemian king Přemysl Ottokar II during the last years of his reign. Over the centuries the building complex was steadily expanded by the Habsburg rulers of Austria. Under Duke Albrecht II the Hofburg became the main residence of the Habsburg Dukes of Austria. In 1327 King Frederick the Fair founded Vienna’s Augustinian Church. The nave of the Augustinian Church is thought to have been completed in 1370. The Church itself was one of the most important locations for dynastic ceremonies celebrated by the imperial family. Emperor Frederick III succeeded in acquiring the palace of the Count of Cilli, which adjoined the Hofburg, thereby expanding the area of the Hofburg westwards. During the First Siege of Vienna by the Turks in 1529 the city’s mediaeval fortifications proved inadequate, and it was the bad weather rather than the city’s battlements that saved the city from the Ottoman army.

The beautiful arcade court of the imperial stables is a great event location in the heart of Vienna from April to October – due to mobile roofing – and has room for up to 560 people. BAROQUE WINTER RIDING SCHOOL Emperor Charles VI. commissioned architect Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach with the construction of the magnificent Winter Riding School, which was finished after only six years of construction time in 1735. The hall is considered to be the most beautiful riding are- na in the world. The late baroque architecture, the beautiful stucco, three floors with seats and the imperial box of the Habsburg family provide an amazing backdrop for events with up to 1.200 guests, all year round. WINTER RIDING SCHOOL The Winter Riding School was constructed between 1729 and 1735 by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach. From the outside, the building forms part of the impressive Hofburg-semicircular at the Michaeler- platz and, at the same time, it frames the Josephplatz square, together with the National Library and the Redoutensaele. The riding hall itself measures 56 meters in length, 17 meters in width, and 17 meters in height. 52 composite columns on the first gallery support the second gallery and lead to an allegorically deco- rated loggia. The ivory-coloured, coffered ceiling is free-hanging and a masterpiece of carpentry.

Dear guest, Visit Vienna! - Even if the Gothic master builders and Baroque castle owners had not thought of wheelchair users. And if also today, barrier-free construction still occasionally falls victim to architectural gimmicks or a lack of consideration. For years, the Vienna City Administration has made efforts to provide services for people with disabilities and special needs: from sloped sidewalks to guiding strips for the blind in subway stations. But there is still a lot to do: at private companies as well as historic attractions, where landmark protection makes technical changes difficult. More information, less frustration. That is our guiding principle when it comes to guests with disabilities and special needs. Don’t hesitate to ask us for any information that you require. There is one thing you can count on: Whenever obstacles need to be overcome, the friendly Viennese locals will be glad to assist you. The information in these guidelines is well- researched and up to date, but unfortunately it can also change without our knowledge. We would be very grateful if you would let us know about any errors that you may notice, and we will correct them. VISIT VIENNA! - NOW. FOREVER.
