SONGS THAT TOUCH OUR SOUL A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF FOLK SONGS IN TWO CHINESE CLASSICS: SHIJING AND HAN YUEFU by Yumei Wang A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Art Graduate Department of the East Asian Studies University of Toronto © Yumei Wang 2012 SONGS THAT TOUCH OUR SOUL A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF FOLK SONGS IN TWO CHINESE CLASSICS: SHIJING AND HAN YUEFU Yumei Wang Master of Art Graduate Department of the East Asian Studies University of Toronto 2012 Abstract The subject of my thesis is the comparative study of classical Chinese folk songs. Based on Jeffrey Wainwright, George Lansing Raymond, and Liu Xie’s theories, this study was conducted from four perspectives: theme, content, prosody structure and aesthetic features. The purposes of my thesis are to trace the originality of 160 folk songs in Shijing and 47 folk songs in Han yuefu , to illuminate the origin of Chinese folk songs and to demonstrate the secularism reflected in Chinese folk songs. My research makes contribution to the following four areas: it explores the relation between folk songs in Shijing and Han yuefu and compares the similarities and differences between them ; it reveals the poetic kinship between Shijing and Han yuefu; it evaluates the significance of the common people’s compositions; and it displays the unique artistic value and cultural influence of Chinese early folk songs. ii Acknowledgments I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor Professor Graham Sanders for his supervision, inspirations, and encouragements during my two years M.A study in the Department of East Asian Studies at University of Toronto.

A deep convolutional network (CNN) model is proposed in this paper for exploiting the spatial influence feature in remotely sensed data. The method was applied in investigating the magnitude of the spatial influence of four factors—population, gross domestic product (GDP), terrain, land-use and land-cover (LULC)—on remotely sensed PM2.5 concentration over China. Satisfactory results were produced by the method. It demonstrates that the deep CNN model can be well applied in the field of spatial analysing remotely sensed big data. And the accuracy of the deep CNN is much higher than of geographically weighted regression (GWR) based on comparation. The results showed that population spatial density, GDP spatial density, terrain, and LULC could together determine the spatial distribution of PM2.5 annual concentrations with an overall spatial influencing magnitude of 97.85%.

Despite great progresses of optical quantum memories based on interactions of light and atoms, physical features of these memories still can not satisfy the requirement for applications in practical quantum information systems, since all of them suffer from trade off between memory efficiency and excess noise. Here, we report a high-performance cavity-enhanced electromagnetically-induced-transparency memory with warm atomic cell in which a scheme of optimizing the spatial and tempo- ral modes based on the time-reversal approach is applied.

  • Pastor Hsi's Legacy
Pastor Hsi’s Legacy 97 Chapter 6 Pastor Hsi’s Legacy A Local Christian Community in South Shanxi Yi Liu One hundred years after the Boxer Movement of 1900, the churches in Linfen of Shanxi Province attracted the attention of the Christian world again.1 While 100 years ago, the local Christians were seen as agents of foreign missionaries and even imperialism, one reason of the current conflict is because of their connection with a counter-China association based in US – the China Aid. When the missionaries interpreted their work is to liberate the locals from superstitions and backwardness, this new association claims that they come to “aid” the people both materially and spiritually. However, whether liberation or aid, the outcome is the tragedy focusing on the local Christians. While the outsiders who also sacrificed or suffered, they also won their reputation in the global world; but for the local Christians, they suffer just as suffering. From the foundation of the People’s Republic of China to the Reform and Opening Up under Mr. Deng Xiaoping, Shanxi is a relatively neglected place, economically, politically and culturally. When the people are impressed by the corrupted coal mine owners, they nearly forget it used to be a historical and civilizational place for thousand years, since the Neolithic age to the Jin State during the Spring and Autumn as well as the Warring States periods, and to the founders of the great Tang Dynasty, as well as the bankers in Ming and Qing. From a religious perspective, Shanxi also has a lower performance, though it had a rich resource of Buddhism and Taoism, such as the Yungang cave sculp- tures, the Wutai Mountain, the temple of General Guan (Guan Gong) and Lü * This research is supported by the project of China’s National Foundation for Social Sciences: “Global Pentecostalism and Christianity in Contemporary China” (11CZJ009).

The outstanding atmospheric environmental problems in Shanxi Province seriously restrict the construction process of beautiful Shanxi Province and affect the construction of ecological civilization in China. In view of this, this paper studies and analyses the existing atmospheric environmental problems in Shanxi Province and the causes of the atmospheric environmental problems combs the impact of atmospheric environmental problems on nature, society, and human beings. We combines with the development of Shanxi Province itself, from strengthening propaganda, establishing and perfecting relevant environmental laws and regulations, strictly implementing the proposed measures and norms for the prevention and control of atmospheric pollution, developing circular economy, controlling gas emission sources and dust production sources, intensifying afforestation and other aspects to put forward countermeasures

\j r-n. '•' -• ' a -"..,•- UNITED NATIONS NATIONS UNIESV " THE SECRETARY-GENERAL MESSAGE TO SHANXI UNIVERSITY ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY Shanvi. 8 Mav 2002 It gives me great pleasure to send my greetings to Shanxi University on the occasion of its centennial. Your distinguished institution has a diverse student body, a faculty with a broad range of expertise, productive ties with universities in many other countries, and a strong commitment to research and inquiry that includes an international perspective. Graduates of the University have gone on to become members of the diplomatic corps, and in this and other fields have helped to promote closer contacts and better understanding between China and the world at large. Education is a key element in development, social progress and human freedom. That is why, at the Millennium Summit at the United Nations in September 2000 - the largest-ever gathering of world leaders - it was decided that one of the "Millennium Development Goals" should be to ensure that every child receives primary education and to eliminate gender disparity in education at all levels. We must continue to do our utmost to ensure that in an era of globalization, knowledge, too, can be globalized and reach across nations. For 100 years, Shanxi University has contributed to this vital endeavour by enriching minds and preparing young people for the responsibilities they will take on as the next generation of leaders both in their own communities and in the international arena. It is my pleasure to congratulate you on this anniversary and milestone, and to thank you for your support of the United Nations.
