Since the last publication of the inventory list for dragonflies and damselflies within the boundary of Andalas University’s Limau Manis Campus Complex, Padang, in 2018, the study has been continuously conducted. In this study we add five new species of Odonata for Andalas University’s Limau Manis Campus Complex, with one species Drepanosticta cf. bispina requires further investigation and elaboration on its existence in West Sumatra. We also corrected the identification of Heliocypha fenestrata into H. angusta angusta. With this addition, Andalas University’s Limau Manis Campus Complex currently resides for 32 species and 9 families of Odonata, increasing from previously 27 species and 8 families. Email: [email protected] Introduction Three families in the superfamily Calopterygoidea occur in China, viz. the Calo- pterygidae, Chlorocyphidae and Euphaeidae. They include numerous species that are distributed widely across South China, mainly in streams and upland running waters at moderate altitudes. To date, our knowledge of Chinese spe- cies has remained inadequate: the taxonomy of some genera is unresolved and no attempt has been made to map the distribution of the various species and genera. This project is therefore aimed at providing taxonomic (including on larval morphology), biological, and distributional information on the super- family in South China. In 2009, two series of surveys were conducted to Southwest China-Guizhou and Yunnan Provinces. The two provinces are characterized by karst limestone arranged in steep hills and intermontane basins. The climate is warm and the weather is frequently cloudy and rainy all year. This area is usually regarded as one of biodiversity “hotspot” in China (Xu & Wilkes, 2004). Many interesting species are recorded, the checklist and photos of these sur- veys are reported here. And the progress of the research on the superfamily Calopterygoidea is appended. Methods Odonata were recorded by the specimens collected and identified from pho- tographs. The Phylogeny of the Zygopterous Dragonflies As Based on The
THE PHYLOGENY OF THE ZYGOPTEROUS DRAGON- FLIES AS BASED ON THE EVIDENCE OF THE PENES* CLARENCE HAMILTON KENNEDY, Ohio State University. This paper is merely the briefest outline of the writer's discoveries with regard to the inter-relationship of the major groups of the Zygoptera, a full account of which will appear in his thesis on the subject. Three papers1 by the writer discussing the value of this organ in classification of the Odonata have already been published. At the beginning, this study of the Zygoptera was viewed as an undertaking to define the various genera more exactly. The writer in no wise questioned the validity of the Selysian concep- tion that placed the Zygopterous subfamilies in series with the richly veined '' Calopterygines'' as primitive and the Pro- toneurinae as the latest and final reduction of venation. However, following Munz2 for the Agrioninae the writer was able to pick out here and there series of genera where the devel- opment was undoubtedly from a thinly veined wing to one richly veined, i. e., Megalagrion of Hawaii, the Argia series, Leptagrion, etc. These discoveries broke down the prejudice in the writer's mind for the irreversibility of evolution in the reduction of venation in the Odonata orders as a whole. Undoubt- ably in the Zygoptera many instances occur where a richly veined wing is merely the response to the necessity of greater wing area to support a larger body. As the study progressed the writer found almost invariably that generalized or connecting forms were usually sparsely veined as compared to their relatives. -

Ware Department of Biological Sciences, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, 195 University Ave., Boyden Hall, Newark, NJ, 07102, USA (Received 18 November 2010; final version received 3 April 2011) Among insects, perhaps the most appreciated are those that are esthetically pleasing: few capture the interest of the public as much as vibrantly colored dragonflies and damselflies (Insecta: Odonata). These remarkable insects are also extensively studied. Here, we review the history of odonate systematics, with an emphasis on discrepancies among studies. Over the past century, relationships among Odonata have been reinterpreted many times, using a variety of data from wing vein morphology to DNA. Despite years of study, there has been little consensus about odonate taxonomy. In this review, we compare odonate molecular phylogenetic studies with respect to gene and model selection, optimality criterion, and dataset completeness. These differences are discussed in relation to the evolution of dragonfly behavior. The order Odonata comprises three suborders: Anisozygoptera, Anisoptera, and Zygoptera. There are approximately 6000 species of Odonata described worldwide (Ardila-Garcia & Gregory, 2009). Of the three suborders Anisoptera and Zygoptera are by far the most commonly observed and collected, because there are only two known species of Anisozygoptera under the genus Epiophlebia. All odonate nymphs are aquatic, with a few rare exceptions such as the semi-aquatic Pseudocordulia (Watson, 1983), and adults are usually found near freshwater ponds, marshes, rivers (von Ellenrieder, 2010), streams, and lakes (although some species occur in areas of mild salinity; Corbet, 1999). -

The fossil record of dragonfly relatives (Odonatoptera) dates back to the Carboniferous, yet knowl- edge about these extinct animals is meagre. For most of the species little is known except for the characteristics of the wing venation. As a result, it is difficult to include fossil larvae in a (wing character based) phylogenetic tree as the wing venation is not visible in most of the larval instars. Two larval specimens from Cretaceous Burmese amber are in the focus of this study. The two specimens likely represent two subsequent early stage larval instars of the same individual. Not only is this an exceptional case to study ontogenetic processes in fossils – the larval instars are morphologically completely different from all known larvae of Odonata with respect to the posterior abdominal region. -

Paraphlebia zoe Selys in Hagen, 1861, una especie endémica de México incluida en la IUCN Red List of threatened species, es registrada por primera vez en el estado de Querétaro. Basado en recientes colectas durante la época de lluvias y la de sequía en bosques mesófilos de montaña, se registra la especie en tres nuevas localidades para Hidalgo. Se compilaron 16 registros históricos de la especie que permitió generar el trazo individual de P. zoe, donde se aprecia que la mayoría de los registros geográficos se ubican en la región sur de la Sierra Madre Oriental y algunos registros en la provincia del Golfo de México; este patrón de distribución también se presenta en varias especies de coleópteros de las familias Staphylinidae, Passalidae y Scarabaeidae. The Damselfly and Dragonfly Watercolour Collection of Edmond

Wasscherb aLingedijk 104, Tricht, the Netherlands; bMinstraat 15bis, Utrecht, the Netherlands (Received 3 March 2017; final version received 10 May 2017) In the nineteenth century Edmond de Selys Longchamps added watercolours, drawings and notes to his extensive collection of dragonfly and damselfly specimens. The majority of illustrations were exe- cuted by Selys and Guillaume Severin. The watercolour collection is currently part of the collection of the Royal Belgian Institute for Natural Sciences in Brussels. This previously unpublished material has now been scanned and is accessible on the website of this institute. This article presents the part of the collection concerning the following sous-familles according to Selys: Calopterygines (currently superfamilies Calopterygoidea and Epiophlebioidea), Cordulines (currently superfamily Libelluloidea), Gomphines (currently superfamily Petaluroidea, Gomphoidea, Cordulegastroidea and Aeshnoidea) and Aeschnines (currently superfamily Aeshnoidea). This part consists of 750 watercolours, 64 drawings and 285 text sheets. Characteristics and subject matter of the sheets with illustrations and text are pre- sented. The majority (92%) of all sheets with illustrations have been associated with current species names (Calopteryines 268, Cordulines 109, Gomphines 268 and Aeschnines 111). We hope the digital images and documentation stress the value of the watercolour collection of Selys and promote it as a source for odonate research.
