It combines historic charm with contemporary style in a central part of Cape Town, nestling between Table Mountain and the city center and within easy walking distance of a variety of boutique stores, restaurants and bars. With 12 rooms and a presidential suite Cape Cadogan is well known for its comfortable, luxurious accommodation and atmosphere. Interiors are a combination of bohemian chic and simple elegance. DAY 6: FRANSCHHOEK, SOUTH AFRICA Day at Leisure DAY 7: XUGANA ISLAND LODGE – OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA Accommodation in Standard Room – Includes all meals refreshments, local spirits & wine, scheduled activities and laundry. Situated on a private concession in a unique part of the Okavango Delta, Xugana Island Lodge is set on the fringe of this magnificent island shaded by the canopy of ebony and African mangosteen trees. Taking full advantage of this site, the open-sided thatched lounge, bar, boma and dining areas, as well as the chalets, gaze out gloriously over the Xugana Lagoon’s expanse of pristine water. The swimming pool, located within the mature gardens in the centre of the island, is a perfect place to relax. Peeking out from under a lush green woodland canopy of ancient ebony trees, Camp Moremi, in the Xakanaxa area of Moremi Game Reserve, is a truly hidden gem. Our camp is an elegant, elevated thatch and timber structure which accommodates just 22 guests in African-style safari tents, each individually sited on a raised teak platform with private adjacent facilities and viewing deck, most offering unsurpassed views of the Xakanaxa Lagoon. Our main building comprises a main sitting area, wildlife reference library, dining room and cocktail bar inviting a true sense of the African wilderness.     University of the Western Cape Faculty of Education A History of the Ottery School of Industries in Cape Town: Issues of Race, Welfare and Social Order in the period 1937 to 1968 By Nur-Mohammed Azeem Badroodien A thesis presented in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Education, University of the Western Cape March 2001 2 Abstract The primary task of this thesis is to explain the establishment of the ‘correctional institution’, the Ottery School of Industries, in Cape Town in 1948 and the programmes of rehabilitation, correctional and vocational training and residential care that the institution developed in the period until 1968. This explanation is located in the wider context of debates about welfare and penal policy in South Africa. The overall purpose is to show how modernist discourses in relation to social welfare, delinquency, and education came to South Africa and was mediated through a racial lens unique to this country. In so doing the thesis uses a broad range of material and levels of analysis from the ethnographic to the documentary and historical. The work seeks to locate itself at the intersection of the fields of education, history, welfare, penality and race in South Africa. The unique contribution of the study lies in the ways in which it engages with the nature of welfare institutions that took the form of Schools of Industries in the apartheid period. The thesis asserts that the motivation for the development of the institution under apartheid was not just the extension of crude apartheid policy, but was also inspired by welfarist and humanitarian goals.
