Rosemond, Professor of Ecology, University of Georgia, and President, Society for Freshwater Science 2:50 p.m. Announcement of the 2020 Fellows of the Society for Freshwater Science Fellows of the Society of Freshwater Science are selected based on sustained excellence in contributions to freshwater science research, policy, or management. They are the leaders, at national and international levels, of their areas of freshwater science. Take a look at the winners of the 8 merit awards and People’s Choice award from 2019. Congratulations, presenters! 2:10 p.m. Award of Excellence address: “Spiralling—A Distance Travelled” J. Denis Newbold, Research Scientists Emeritus, Stroud Water Research Center The Society for Freshwater Science Award of Excellence is awarded to a single recipient for outstanding contributions to freshwater science. The scope of the award reflects the broad interests and expertise exhibited in the Society. The award is not limited to members of the Society. 3:00 p.m. SFS Standing Committees Meeting and Info Session – all are welcome Members of the standing committees of the Society gather for their annual planning meeting. The following committees will NOT be meeting during this time: Finance Committee, Development Committee, Constitutional Revision Committee, Taxonomic Certification Committee. The event is open to all and provides an opportunity for SFS members interested in committee service to learn about each committee's work from SFS leadership and committee chairs and current members. Attendees can also use this time to join a committee that they would like to serve on. The recipient must have received a terminal post-graduate degree within the last five years, and cannot currently be enrolled in a degree program. 2:45 p.m. Announcement of the Recipients of the 2020 Environmental Stewardship and Distinguished Service Awards The recipient of the Society for Freshwater Science Environmental Stewardship Award will be a Society member or non-member who has worked successfully to translate scientific knowledge into the social/public arena. This may occur in the policy arena via regulatory reform that requires or enables consideration of biological conditions (e.g., biological assessment or criteria), in the research SFS Summer of Science 2020 Week 1 Program 4 arena via ecosystem rehabilitation or aquatic conservation, or in the educational arena via public outreach in science education. The Society for Freshwater Science Distinguished Service Award is awarded to a Society member who has made a genuine and lasting contribution to the betterment of the Society. Awardees: Environmental Stewardship Award: Valeria Souza, Professor, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México; Distinguished Service Award: Michael C. Swift, Assistant Professor Emeritus, St. Olaf College 3:00 p.m. SFS Regional Chapters Town Hall – all are welcome Come discuss how Chapters can bring more networking and support to members through their activities and regional meet-ups, particularly in the age of pandemics. Meet fellow members of your SFS regional chapter, learn what SFS chapters have been up to, or find out how to form a new regional chapter.
