Dear Graduates, This is a very special Homecoming for me, since it occurs shortly after I begin my new role as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of ’s premier university. It’s a privilege to be the first alumna to fill the position and I eagerly look forward to reconnecting with the members of the McGill community, including my fellow graduates. I am especially honoured to be returning to my alma mater at a time when McGill has become so prominent on the international stage. By any measure, McGill ranks among the truly great universities of the world and I look forward to sharing my alumni pride with you when I have the chance to introduce myself at an event on Saturday, October 19. I hope you will plan to attend as it will afford me the opportunity to meet many of you in person. I always credit my McGill education with opening many doors for me. My life was literally transformed by my experiences here as a student and Homecoming 2013 will be a delightful opportunity to engage with people who feel as passionately about McGill as I do. The loyalty and commitment of McGill graduates are legendary, and this was nowhere more evident than in the incredible success of Campaign McGill – History in the Making. Thanks to the work of hundreds of volunteers and the generosity of more than 96,000 donors around the world, the campaign far exceeded its goal, raising an extraordinary $1.026 billion in support of teaching, research, resources for students and local and global outreach initiatives. We have much to celebrate and I hope the material in the brochure will inspire you to join us for Homecoming 2013. There are wonderful activities planned for our alumni and friends, and I hope to have the pleasure of seeing you in October. With warm regards,

Suzanne Fortier, BSc’72, PhD’76 Principal and Vice-Chancellor

4 McGill Homecoming 2013 Dear Graduates, McGill in the fall is a beautiful place to visit, whether you are strolling on our downtown grounds or out at Macdonald Campus. And returning to McGill for Homecoming Weekend with thousands of alumni makes it all the more extraordinary, as graduates both young and old reunite with friends and classmates. This brochure outlines the dozens of special events we have planned for you. Celebrate McGill’s sports heroes and the University’s proud tradition of athletics at the Sports Hall of Fame Luncheon or cheer on the Redmen of today at the Homecoming 2013 Football Game. Don’t miss the always hilarious Leacock Luncheon with host Derek Drummond and this year’s guest speaker, Dan Needles, the witty playwright behind the popular Wingfield series. At Lunch et Livres, book lovers can grab a bite to eat and meet McGill authors, including Jan Wong, BA’74, Katrina Onstad, BA’94, and Professor Andrew Piper, as they discuss their latest work. Or join architect and bestselling author Witold Rybczynski, BArch’66, MArch’72, DSc’02, for this year’s Beatty Memorial Lecture on “Architecture and the Passage of History.” Rybczynski’s writing will be familiar to many from the Atlantic, the New Yorker and other prominent publications. Just because you’ve graduated doesn’t mean you stop learning. Take in one of the talks from the Classes Without Quizzes series, or attend a faculty reception where students, researchers and professors will dazzle you with the latest in McGill research. There’s a lot to be proud of! Whatever your age or affiliation, Homecoming Weekend offers something for everyone so we hope you will study the list of events and join us from October 17-20. Some activities fill up quickly, so be sure to register early to avoid disappointment. We look forward to greeting you in the fall.

Dear Graduates, It is my great pleasure to welcome you to another exciting Macdonald Homecoming. Activities begin on Wednesday, October 16, with the Inaugural A. Jean de Grandpré Seminar. This very special event, to be held at Moyse Hall on the downtown campus, honours McGill’s Chancellor Emeritus A. Jean de Grandpré for his extraordinary contributions to Macdonald. The seminar will feature world experts discussing strategies for feeding the planet. This kicks off an action-packed Homecoming that will include the Annual Leacock Luncheon, special class dinners, and a casual Meet and Greet at Tadja Hall on Friday evening. On Saturday, October 19, join us at our Memorabilia Coffee Break and a special presentation by renowned environmental professors who are working on intriguing environmental research topics. This is a celebration of the 15th anniversary of the McGill School of Environment. The Sir William Macdonald Luncheon on Saturday will feature a timely talk by Professor Chris Buddle on “Tweets, Blogs and MOOCs: The Changing Landscape of Higher Education.” We will also present the Macdonald Distinguished Alumni Awards to exemplary graduates at the Luncheon. I invite you to return to Macdonald to experience the richness and beauty of the campus in the autumn and to renew friendships. You will find that the Mac spirit remains strong in the lives of our students and faculty. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you most sincerely for helping Macdonald to remain such a wonderful and inspiring institution. I will be honoured to welcome you back to our great and glorious alma mater for Homecoming.
