    125 years since the birth of the Romanian scientist ŞTEFAN PROCOPIU prof.dr.ing. Florin Teodor TĂNĂSESCU MOTTO: “Progress is made at the expense of the persevering” - Ştefan Procopiu (in a lecture given in 1939) January 19, 2015, marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of the Romanian physicist Ştefan Procopiu, one of the outstanding personalities of world physics whose discoveries bear his name and represent great openings in modern physics. Ştefan Procopiu is not an exception, a meteoric case in Romanian physics, he is one of the great founders of the School of Physics in Iaşi represented by Dragomir Hurmuzescu (discharge of X-ray electrified bodies: Magnetism), Ion Plăcinteanu (prediction of the existence of negative protons in 1933, before Gramov and before L. de Broglie made the hypothesis on photons, the wave equation of a variable mass body and the determination of Dirac's equation for a particle of variable mass), Horia Hulubei (X-ray spectra for matter in gaseous state and multiple Compton scattering), Constantin Mihul (determination of the chemical composition of the representative gasolines from the Romanian oil by own spectroscopic methods), Th. V. Ionescu (physics of plasma and ionosphere, the first "stimulated" MASER type emission in 1946! Together with C. Mihul and before its invention in 1954). And the series of examples could continue with many of Ştefan Procopiu's students and his students' students, with meritorious achievements in Romanian and international science. Today, when we talk about value, what it represents and what the man of value should be in the progress of society, when we need models that younger generations know less, their presentation, in addition to the invitation to be followed, is also a tribute that we electrical engineers pay with reverence and gratitude to those who developed Romanian physics and electrical engineering.

    Memoirs of the Scientific Sections of the Romanian Academy Tome XLI, 2018 HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY THE IMPORTANCE OF AN INITIATOR – THE CASE OF THE SCHOOL OF SENSORS IN IAŞI, ROMANIA HORIA-NICOLAI TEODORESCU Institute of Computer Science of the Romanian Academy – Iaşi Branch Technical University of Iasi, Iasi, Romania This article is a case study related to the role of “founding scientists” in creating schools and research directions. Keywords: scientific schools, sensor science, magnetic sensors, Dragomir Hurmuzescu, Gabriel Lippmann, Ştefan Procopiu, Gérard d’Albon There is a tendency nowadays to overlook, even lessen the value and role of “schools” and personalities in science. In this brief historical note, we exemplify the importance of a scientific initiator by recalling the development of the research in sensors in Iasi, Romania, a research direction with origins clearly traceable to Dragomir Hurmuzescu and to his works elaborated at the end of the 19th century. Even after one century, Hurmuzescu’s contributions are cited and his work highlighted in reviews such as that of Roberto de Andrade Martins, The rise of magneto- chemistry from Ritter to Hurmuzescu (in “Foundations of Chemistry”, July 2012). The study of electric and electronic sensors has been established in Iaşi as a direction of research providing relevant results at international level as early as the last decade of the 19th century, being initiated and oriented by Dragomir Hurmuzescu, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy (“purged out” in the year 1948), professor at the University of Iaşi since 1896, after having publicly defended a brilliant PhD thesis in Paris.

    NICHOLAS IONESCU-PALLAS AT 70 YEARS Valentin I. Vlad It is a pleasant duty for me to write, with all my affection and appreciation, about one of the most respectable Romanian physicists and a friend, Nicholas th Ionescu-Pallas, at his 70 anniversary. Nicholas Ionescu-Pallas was born the 30th July, 1932, the son of Ion Ionescu and Maria Dinca, in Pallas, close to the town Constantza, in Romania. With a strong bending for Mathematics, he became a student of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University in Bucharest (1951-1955). After taking his degree in Physical Sciences, Nicholas was admitted in the Laboratory of Spectroscopy of the Institute of Physics of the Romanian Academy. In 1956, the institute changed its title and research directions becoming the Institute of Atomic Physics and the young researcher was working, as theorist, in the Laboratory of Optical Methods in Nuclear Physics, lead by Professor Ion Agarbiceanu. In December 1959, Ionescu-Pallas married Constantza Potoceanu, a Physicist from the same institute, who will share with him the joy of work in Physics, the scientific successes and the understanding of the complex conditioning of the life. The Agarbiceanu’s laboratory obtained soon valuable results in the field of isotopic and hyperfine atomic structures, earning international recognition (for instance from professors A. Kastler and Jacquinot at Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris), after Ionescu-Pallas had provided an original theoretical interpretation of the results (Phys. Rev., 117, 505(1960), Ann. Physik, 8, 9(1961) and 10, 121(1962)). In 1962, this laboratory obtained a very important achievement, the design and operation of the first He-Ne infrared laser, one year only after its first development in the United States.

The aforementioned foun- ders of Modern Physics in Romania were the heirs of the traditions in education and research from the historical provinces of Romania. These traditions rekindled after the Second World War and bloomed through the foundation and subsequent development of the Magurele˘ Physics Campus, now a Historic Site of the European Physical Soci- ety. Studying the archive of Revue Roumaine de Physique, we have identified eleven Laureates of the Nobel Prize, either for Physics or for Chemistry, who were closely con- nected with the development of physics in Romania and published in Revue Roumaine de Physique: C.V.
