MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 3

SECRETARY'S REPORT

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Your Committee has much pleasure in submitting for your approval the 84th Annual Report and Statement of Receipts and Payments for season 2013/14.

A summary of the Clubs achievements this past season follows:

On Field: Premiers: U18s, Runners up U16C, Semi Finalists D Turf, G Turf, LOC3,Veterans Gold & Veterans Green, Under 16A , Under12A, Junior U16 T20 Premiers

Facilities: The Committee has continued to work with the City of Whitehorse and Surrey Park Lacrosse Club on the redevelopment proposals for Mont Albert Reserve, Peter Knox, Paul Devine and Rick Barker are the Subcommittee appointed to finalise the design. The Pavilion at Mont Albert Reserve has been demolished and the new pavilion is due for completion in September 2014.

Participation: 230 Players represented MACC during the season, Ben Galtieri and Nick Adgemis both turned out for the club in 24 matches with James Guley playing 23 matches. Congratulations to Luke Pich on achieving 300 Games and John Behrendt, Gus McLean and Paul Devine on achieving 200 games.

We need to thank in particular the Canterbury Ashburton Surrey Hills and Balwyn Community Banks, Dick Menting (Chairman) and Nick Coker (Manager) for their generous support of our projects, as well as all our sponsors for their generous support.

Thanks go to the members of the committee, captains, coaches, team managers and volunteers for their efforts throughout the season but, in particular, our Club coach and 1 st XI Jack Joslin. Wayne Harris who did a fantastic job as Veterans Coordinator Harvey Jones who co- ordinated getting 8 Junior teams on the field each week. Jimmy Wright, Kiel Johnsen, Eddie Plant and Greg Cull have taken on the role of social committee and organised a number of successful functions including the Ladies Lunch, the Trivia Night and the Reverse Draw as well as the Presentation Night which was a fitting climax to the season.

Again, the workers crew of Jack Wright, Roger Smith and Peter Burchall with moral and bakery support from KR and Richard Harding have kept the pavilion compound in shape and kept at through a hard season.

Thanks to everyone who has submitted reports this season the challenge of using melon and genuflect in the same sentence was gladly taken up by most, Gus Maclean as always managed the mots textually correct usage for which I congratulate him, Greg Cull changed genuflect in to an adjective so is disqualified, Harvey Jones used the word melon completely out of context so

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 4

dips out also. Peter Knox has usually been disqualified as his report is far too wordy for me to even find the right sentence, but I have made the effort this year only to find the words changed to past tense, this is normally a disqualification but because Peter has tried so hard over many years I have given him a sympathy vote and the award for this year.

This is to be my final Annual Report and after around 29 years on the committee of MACC I would like to pay tribute to the following people: - All of the current and past committee members I have worked with since 1985, I had the benefit of starting my career in administration with people such as Garnet Armstrong, Paul Hastings, Peter Coombs and Doug Dosser, this was a great start and I learned a lot. - The Presidents I worked with as treasurer or secretary, Paul Hastings, John Behrendt, Kevin Ruljancich and Peter Knox, all excellent leaders in their own ways. - Chris Dunning and Jeff Mollison who were Club Secretary before me who both set a standard for administration of the Club that has given the Club the excellent reputation it has today. - Jack Wright, Roger Smith and Peter Burchall, your work at the Club is invaluable. In bringing to a close my administrative role at MACC I reflect on the many benefits such roles bring, not only at a personal development level but in the satisfaction I have always found in ensuring that the job was done to my utmost ability and that it is important to me how our Club is view by the wider community and the ECA. Strong and effective administration is a very important part of what we can achieve and enhances our ability to achieve our goals as a Club. All the very best to Greg Cull in his new role.

Congratulations to all the trophy winners for season 2013-14. The winners of the various awards for the season are as follows;

The committee and members were saddened by the passing of Life Member Colin Jennings, and past players Les Woods and Phil Burley.

Col Jennings joined MACC in the 1980s having played and been awarded life membership at Burwood Cricket Club. Colin played 149 matches scoring 3820 at 30, 3 centuries, with a top score of 164 however his great value to the club was as Chairman of Selectors, he brought patience and pragmatism to the job and was a fantastic presence around the Club, he will be sadly missed. Our condolences go to Carole and the extended family.

Les Woods was a player between 1961 and 1972 and played 127 games scoring nearly 3000 runs at 19 with a top score of 102

Phil Burley started at the Club in the juniors in 1985 and played Under 14s and 16s, Phil was a very hard hitting batsman through 126 senior games, 3121 runs, 5 centuries and a top score of 202. Phil holds the record for the most 6s hit in an innings at MACC.

Our condolences go out to the Woods and Burley Families.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Again let me acknowledge and thank all our sponsors, particularly Bendigo Bank who again have made a big contribution to the progress of the club. Can I recommend Bendigo Bank products to all members and respectively suggest they give full consideration to the Bank when undertaking financial decisions.

I’d like to draw members’ attention to the sad passing during the year of life member Col Jennings and also Phil Burley. Both will be well remembered for many years to come, they two have made their contribution to the Club. Les Wood also passed in March this year, Les was an opening batsmen for the club between 1961 and 1973 (mostly in the second XI) and is remembered by Peter Coombs and Richard Harding. Peter tells me that Les brought him down to the club, and if he did nothing else for the club then he still did great service bringing Pete to the club.

On a much happy note the club celebrated the award of life memberships to Gus Mclean and Tim Wright. Gus’ contribution as long term Captain of our 5 th XI and sustained plundering of opposition attacks is one of the foundations on which the rest of the club sits; and Tim’s contribution right through from his time as a Junior through to Dunstan Shield winning Captain Coach, selection in the ECA team of the decade (2000s) and current service on the Committee has been outstanding.

It’s been Jack Joslin’s first year with club as Coach & Captain of the first XI, Jack has brought many new innovations and made a big positive impression and I think everyone is looking forward to having him at the helm next season.

With the demolition of the old pavilion during the Winter, this year much of the road has been a hard one, we’ve been camping out in temporary sheds, containers and under the trees in the old North car park and have pushed through quite a bit of inconvenience as we have variously frozen, been baked, rained on, windblown and eaten more than our fair share of dust.

These depredations have undoubtedly affected the bar and our takings as a club are indeed down. The really good news is that at the time of writing the Treasurer has indicated that we will likely report a modest profit for the year which is a great effort in the circumstances.

Part of the reason for this is the fine work to stage the trivia night and reverse raffle by particularly Greg Cull, James Wright, Kiel Johnsen and Ed Plant. Our thanks to Surrey Cricket for allowing us to use their facilities for our trivia night and as hosts for the joint Ladies Luncheon in aid of the McGrath Foundation which is James Wrights’ baby and a growing success it is. Both were very successful.

What I think is of great credit to everyone is that I can’t recall anyone complaining or having a whinge or getting upset with other people or the setup. I think there are two reasons for that, firstly that’s the culture of our club, we don’t whine or look for other people to solve our problems, we work together look after each other and find a way. Secondly, what has made a big difference is being able to look across and see our new Pavilion taking shape which I think has provided everyone with encouragement

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 9

knowing the end results will be worth the sacrifice. When building a Pavilion or taking on a large project people often think do we have the financial resources to make it happen? ”, I‘ve learnt that equally important is has the club built up the inner strengths to be able to take on a project of this nature; these resources take time and effort to build up and don’t happen by chance. The answer is now becoming increasingly clear and that is that we do, though is there is still a lot to be done and I fear the devil is going to be in the detail from here.

One thing is for sure I’m totally over having to lock up those containers!

So thanks to everyone for their tolerance, patience and club spirit. Particular thanks are due to Richard Barker and Paul Devine for their work with Surrey Park Lacrosse Club and WCC to develop the final design for the Pavilion, if we do achieve a superior outcome in prospect then it will be because of their creativity and input along with the Council and Lacrosse boys.

Construction of the Pavilion took quite a while to get started and out of the ground, but once the slab had been laid things have really moved forward steadily and we are on track for a handover in the late September/ early October time frame.

From there we will address new practice facilities and the decline in the state of the outfield. Indications from the Council are that the outfield will be addressed immediately and new practice facilities over a two/three year period post pavilion completion - although full commitment is yet to be obtained.

Our club will have an unprecedented opportunity to move forward into a new era over that period, all of us must be sure we can take up this challenge, but I can tell you the rewards both on and off field will be well worth it.

On field outcomes have been decidedly mixed, with the first and second XIs disappointing, both missing the finals and only rarely playing to their potential or indeed previous performance levels . The 1s just didn’t get away to develop any momentum and suffered from unavailability at crucial times in the season. Pioneering a visiting West Indian (Rachid O’Neale) proved to be largely successful both onfield and off. Though I think we can definitely do it better and by so doing there is potential to gain a real advantage over our competitors. It is very evident that a number of Clubs have followed the path we have pioneered and are upgrading the quality of visiting overseas players. Overseas recruitment, while still not decisive in determining on field success has become an important element in Club success.

The seconds must refocus, if they are to get anywhere near their potential. I know Jack has already begun to address these shortcomings with the support of the Committee and is looking at his recruiting program.

The thirds, fourths and fifths showed solid improvement through the season and great team spirit, Graeme Chipp, Gus Mclean and Michael Massey frequently returning with some great winning war stories.

Cause and effect is sometimes difficult to separate but the health of these 3 XIs is certainly aided by the regularly winning battle at the selection table waged by Richard and the five Captains to get all XIs on

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 10

the ground every week, frequently they would scratch their melons as they genuflected to a very unforgiving fixture and list of un-availabilities. Thanks Richard Jack, Greg, Michael, Graeme and Gus.

I think one of the reasons these XIs had a good measure of success is our stocks of players in the key 17 to say 22 range - without too much difficulty I can list 20+ very solid players in this category so if we can navigate through VCE exams, schoolies and the Spring racing carnival then a good number can expect to be picked in the 1s and 2s next season.

Possibly the biggest success of the year has been the U18s, this has been great fun with a first up Premiership and some outstanding performances with Bat and Ball; Tim Wilton and his crew deserve great credit for taking up this challenge and running their own race. Hopefully they will have more clubs to beat next season as other clubs see the big benefits of this competition and enter sides.

Our Junior program, led by Harvey Jones (thank you for all your work and that of your coaches and managers) featured our U16a who made the Semi Finals and who were very competitive throughout the season finishing 3 rd and bowing out in the Semi Final. We have some terrific players coming through there such as, but by no means limited to Ban Galtieri, Andrew Young, Josh Devine, Sam Dawborn (when available), Dakshil Patel and Rishabh Nagpal to name just a few; culminating in Andrew Young gaining selection in the Victorian State side for his age group. One good initiative this year was a joint U16 side with Canterbury Cricket Club, neither club had sufficient players for a second U16 team, so by combining and bringing both clubs together we were able to offer more Cricket to more young men.

Richard took a different approach with the Milo Have a Go moving it pre-Christmas to balance the work load and again a great time was had by all.

I would like to inject a note of caution here for our Juniors, the absence of a Pavilion made it difficult to maintain the usual Junior social program and we have seen numbers drop off in the recent past (excluding the U18 we had just 6 ‘pure MACC teams participating) and we did not quite see the on field success we have been spoiled by in the recent past.

Completion of the new Pavilion will provide an opportunity to return to previous participation levels (both onfield and Social). The whole club needs to make this a priority for next season by doing the preparation work over the winter for next season and if necessary recruiting additional resources from the Junior parent group.

At the other end of the scale all four of our Vets sides performed creditably led by the Golds who finished on top of their division, though without their usual harvest of silverware. Perhaps they need to look at their preseason training regime – come to think of it they don’t have one at all so perhaps that’s the problem.. Noticeably the post-match social side of things was probably down, but I think that was understandable in the circumstances. For the Vets there is probably a strong positive correlation between red wine consumption and on field success.

Wayne Harris’ tireless work in coordinating the Vets was again beautifully done getting four complete and balanced sides on the ground round after round really is tough so well done Wayne.

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 11

Looking to next season, I think we need to address some key issues.

On-field:

- Strengthen the seconds; as a club we should not have our seconds playing C turf, they are better than that and failure to improve will impact our 1 st XI. - Learn to play One day and T20 Cricket – We have to admit it, we are poor at the shorter form of the game. Consistently we let opportunities for easy points escape us with underperformance in one day cricket. Part of the solution must be to review our whole approach to the T20 competition. - Capitalise on the good young players coming through our 3rds, 4ths and 5ths by getting significant numbers into the 2nds and 1s to again contend for a premiership. Off-field:

- Manage the move back into new Clubrooms and ensure that we have a really strong Social Calendar next season to relaunch the club and begin to take advantage of the new opportunities that are opening up for us. - Make sure the Junior program remains strong and vigorous both on and off-field. - Look at how we manage visiting overseas players, making sure they are well managed and supported and their needs are met so they can produce their best onfield and go home recommending MACC to all their mates as a great place to play Cricket and visit. I know Val Wright agrees with me on this issue and has put her thoughts on paper as to how we can improve our approach.

Going back 12 months I was a bit concerned about how things were going to go this year. The council was cutting down our trees and about to start demolishing our old and much loved Pavilion and we had a year of camping out ahead with only some lines on paper as to what we were going to get at the end of it all.

We are no through the worst of it and it and I can tell you it has been a lot harder than usual; though I have to say it hasn’t been as bad as I and many others thought. So again let me congratulate everyone on how they have handled it all – it’s reflected well on our club and made us stronger.

Let me conclude with a note of thanks to the whole Committee, all Committee members have played important parts in guiding and leading the Club, not many clubs have more people standing for election than there are spots on the Committee. A particular note of thanks to Richard Barker and Allen Burton on whom much of the day to day administrative load falls as Secretary and Treasurer.

Go Monts!

In Cricket,

P. B. Knox President

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 12

THE FIRST XI

The pre-season began with an informal get together at the Harp, where I was able to meet some of the players and people who held responsibilities within the club. The aim of this get together was to outline the goals/objectives for the season ahead, stating expectations, and to seek individual goals of players, both on and off the field. Following on from the Harp, we ran a number of fitness sessions held at Simon Olive’s Anytime Gym’s (Box Hill & Balwyn). The focus of these sessions was to get players back working together as a group, while improving on areas of strength and endurance. We had a hit out against Surrey Hills before round 1, which was a good opportunity to blow a few cobwebs out and to spend some valuable time in the middle before round 1.

With the typical inclement October weather, the proposed round 1 two-day game was changed to a 1- day fixture on the second Saturday in October, verse Hawthorn at Rathmines Road Reserve. Due to a grand final suspension, Mont Albert were able to blood another Devine into the fold, with son of Paul, Josh making his debut with the gloves. We bowled first on what looked to be an under prepared green , keeping Hawthorn to a modest total of 6/154, with bowlers sharing the spoils. They got away from us a little at the end of the innings, which was the disappointment, probably scoring 20 more runs than we would have liked. We started the chase extremely well, reaching 1/77 at the half way mark, only to lose 4/9 in quick time, to fall 14 runs short. A game that we should have won!

Round 2 saw us at home for the first time of the season against Glen Iris in a two-day encounter. We won the toss and elected to bat in sunny conditions and a nice looking wicket. We managed to scrounge out a total of 8/249, after a top order collapse, with Jack Joslin making his debut century for the club and good contributions down the order from John Blakely (46) and Devine (34). Unfortunately that inclement October weather cost us the chance to bowl at Glen Iris the following week to push for our first victory of the season.

Round 3 saw the unveiling of the great tearaway West Indian Rachid O’Neale, who arrived in the country only the day before. We lost the toss on what turned out to be a great day for batting and unfortunately witnessed what was to be the first of 3 centuries in a row by North Balwyn’s professional, Patel. Good bowling performances from Jackson and Wright, who both claimed 2 a piece, and a special mention to Rachid, who toiled manfully through 14 overs, while suffering from jetlag. North Balwyn reached a total of 8/307. In reply, Mont Albert only managed 9/220 in reply, with contributions from Devine (63no), Joslin (46) and Miller (37). Unfortunately hard work at training was not paying off on the weekend and we were still without a win from 3 games.

We travelled out to Mulgrave for our round 4 rivalry clash, in another 1-day outing, as it rained on our parade (proposed first day of the match), looking for the first win of the year. We lost the toss, which proved costly, only managing to post a total of 8/144 off the allotted 40 overs. There were a few starts by our top order (Wright 29, Baker 34 and Hargreaves 23), but nothing significant enough for us to post a solid total. Mulgrave chased the target down inside 34 overs (3/147), with some class batting from

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 13

their overseas player, which resulted in Mont Albert succumbing to their third loss in 4 matches, and still without a win.

Mont Albert travelled to Heathmont and won the toss in the round 5 battle, electing to bat. Another top order collapse saw Mont Albert 6/69, with Wright holding strong at the other end. It looked all doom and gloom, before a great partnership between Wright and O’Neale (79 runs) guided us to a respectable target of 163, in trying conditions. Wright batted superbly, in bowler friendly conditions, to score a hard fought 78, nearly batting through the innings. It turned out to be a match winning knock, as Mont Albert crashed through Heathmont’s batting line-up, bowling them out for a poultry 82. Hargreaves was the pick of the bowlers with 4/17 off 12, while there were solid contribution also from Patel (3/13) and Jackson 2/14. Mont Albert put Heathmont back in for a second crack at it with the bat and had them 6/78, before the close of play, with Patel and Baker both claiming 2 scalps. Great to have the first win of the season!!

Coming off a great win against Heathmont instilled some confidence and belief amongst the lads, and it showed in the efforts against St Kevins in the round 6 clash at home. Winning the toss and sending St Kevins into bat in overcast conditions, paid dividends as Mont Albert restricted them to a total of 117. Superb efforts with the ball by our speedster Rachid ‘Tino’ O’Neale, who claimed his first five wicket haul (5/21 off 16 overs), with some hostile bowling. It was a great effort by all our bowlers, who maintained the pressure, by limiting the scoring opportunities consistently for St Kevins. The following week, Mont Albert chased down the target with ease, cruising to a total of 2/221(dec). It was the second century for the season, with a class knock by former Captain/Coach Wright (107). He was assisted at the other end by Joslin (88) and the two put on a first wicket partnership of 199. Mont Albert sent St Kevins in for a second dig with the bat, but only managed to have them 1/101 at the close of the day. Two wins in a row = A real positive.

Round 7 away verse Marcellin in a one-day encounter, saw Mont Albert bowl out their opposition for 167 in the 39 th over. A great display of bowling at the death by John Blakely saw him claim 4/13, while the rest of the wickets were shared with two apiece to Hargreaves and Patel. In reply, Mont Albert passed the modest total 4 wickets down in the 36 th over, with good contributions from Joslin (64), Blakely (31no) and Wilton (26no). It was the third win in a row for Mont Albert and the club felt as though they were gaining some good momentum going into the back end of the season.

The round 8 fixture against Deepdene, away, will be remembered mostly for the blow to Wrighty’s head early in Mont Albert’s innings with the bat. Unfortunately for Wrighty’s sake he wasn’t wearing a helmet when a searing from Deepedene’s left arm opening bowler crashed into the left side of his head, forcing him off to hospital and to retire hurt. It did not get any better from here for Mont Albert as they were skittled for a disappointing total of 109 inside 35 overs. Baker was the only batsmen to get a start for the afternoon with 26. With the ball and in the field, Mont Albert had their chances, taking early scalps and having some chances to take a couple more. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and our poor batting performance came back to haunt us, as Deepdene passed the total 5 down, inside 30 overs. Mont Albert’s winning streak had come to an end.

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 14

Round 9 was a two-day match at home verse Ashburton, who were coming off some good form as a team. Mont Albert loss the toss and were sent in to bat, making a total of 193, after yet another middle order collapse. John Blakely was the shining light with a positive 64 and had some good assistance from Wright (28) and O’Neale (23) down the order. The innings came to a close towards the end of day 1, giving Mont Albert a brief crack at Ashburton’s openers. This brought music to O’Neale’s ears and he steamed in taking a wicket with his first ball, bouncing the opener, only to have him glove one down leg side and taken by another Mont Albert debutant, Luke Galtieri. That left Ashburton one down overnight and plenty to think about coming into day2. Mont Albert started day two where they’d left off from day one, skittling Ashburton for 159 in their best bowling performance for the season. O’Neale again was the standout with 4 wickets and was well supported by the durable John Blakely who claimed 3/37 off 21.3 overs in the heat.

Mont Albert faced the flag favourites in Bulleen at home in round 10, in what turned out to be another one-day game, not due to rain, but this time due the new heat rule. After winning the toss and batting in what seemed good batting conditions, Mont Albert struggled to obtain any momentum throughout their innings, finally being bowled out for 130 in the last over. Baker was the best of the batsmen with 35, but again no one going on to make a big one! Bulleen passed the total of 130 4 down in the 30 th over, with O’Neale and John Blakely the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets each.

The final round of the season saw Surrey Hills host Mont Albert for a two-day clash. The two teams came together to raise awareness for breast cancer, hosting a ladies lunch and fundraiser in the Surrey Hills pavilion for all mothers, girlfriends, other relatives and friends of players from both teams. The match also supported the theme, with pink stumps at both ends and pink ‘Jane McGrath Foundation’ hats worn by the players. Mont Albert batted first on a slow Surrey pitch and to continue the theme for the season, had a middle order collapse, before Devine added respectability to the total, with a gritty 51. Wright was the only other contributor at the top of the innings with a good 43. The lads finished with a total of 154. Surrey Hills passed the total of 154 7 wickets down, after a great performance by our overseas O’Neale, who claimed his second 5 wicket haul for the season. It was a disappointing way to end the season and to send off a true Mont Albert champion, Tim Hargreaves, who announced his retirement. Let’s hope some lessons have been learnt by all and we can turn things around for a positive 2014/15 season.

Kookaburra T20 Competition

The annual ECA T20 competition saw Mont Albert play four matches.

Mont Albert lost to Glen Iris 6/85 to 9/84

Mont Albert lost to Clifton Hill 6/178 to 9/158

Mont Albert defeated South Camberwell 5/247 to 3/77

Mont Albert lost to St Barnabas 6/141 to 9/109

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 15

One win from 4 matches was not good enough by the club and it is evident the club needs to take a different approach to T20 cricket this coming season.

There were some positives that came from the season 2013/14, which were:

- 3rds, 4ths and 5 th made the finals. - Junior teams tasted success with some flags. - Junior development at the club is strong and only going to get stronger. In finalising, as Captain/Coach for the 2013/14 season, I want to thank a few people. My job was made a lot easier thanks to the following people:

President Peter Knox - who puts in countless hours of work behind the scenes for the club and only has the best interests of the club at heart.

Secretary/Chairman of Selectors Rick Barker – the amount of time and effort Rick puts into the club, with not only chasing blokes to play late in the week with phone calls and emails, but also manages to play a vital role on the field for the club in the 2 nds and 3rds.

Training Captain Roger – who takes time out of his Tuesdays and Thursdays to ensure all at training get a bat and bowl.

All the gentlemen who help out around the club (I could name many) – whether it be cooking dinners on a Thursday night, helping set up on the weekends, pouring drinks for the players or supporting/encouraging on the weekends – it all is much appreciated and makes the club what it is today – a well-regarded, strong and respected club from all who are involved, either within or external to the club.

My final words for all the players, supporter and administrators of Mont Albert CC is to be grateful for being part of this club, treasure your time at this club, and to learn from the season that has just passed, to make every post a winner from now on in to ensure a successful season on the field in 2014/15

Go the Mont’s.

THE SECOND XI

It was a tale of two halves for the Second XI in season 2013-14. We started our season with 4 wins, a loss and a draw to be in the four and in finals contention at the Christmas break.

Batting first against East Malvern Tooronga, we posted a competitive total of 6/161 (Greedy 43, Johnsen 35, S.Jones 27). In reply, we restricted our opponents to 9/141 with Johnsen (3/23) completing a good all round performance.

Our batting was exposed in the next game against La Trobe Uni. With some good bowling from the opposition, we collapsed to 5/39 before Orchard (64*) and Padbury (35) combined for an 80 run partnership for the 9th wicket. Our total of 187 was competitive, but rain the following week did not allow us the chance to defend it.

The trip to Mazenod was one to forget. Mazenod’s total of 168 (Cull 4/10, Power 3/50, Orchard 3/57) should have been much less. Some late order hitting and some poor fielding let them back into the game. We lost 4/35 overnight and capitulated the following week to be all out for 51on a rain affected wicket. In the 2nd innings, Simon Jones (37*) showed that the wicket was not as bad as we had made it look, as we reached 4/95.

This loss was followed by 3 consecutive wins before the Christmas break. Tim Wilton contributed a well made 60 in the 1 dayer against Glen Iris. Our total of 5/166 included starts from all the other batsmen. With a disciplined line from our bowlers, Glen Iris were never in contention, finishing their innings 6/109 (Bonnett and Guley 2 wickets each).

A similar scenario followed against Donvale in the next match. We posted 5/147 (Cooper 33) and in reply, Donvale were all out 94. Charlie Thorn starred in his first game, taking 4/8 (including the last 3 wickets in 4 balls) and Dan Bonnett collected 3/19. Thorn would prove to be the find of the season and with a big pre-season, I expect him to be pushing for first XI selection next season.

With improved player availability, a strong team took the field against Canterbury in what was our best batting performance for the season. We batted our 80 overs to finish 7/297 (Jim Blakely 63, Cooper 57, Johnsen 57). With a strong platform provided by the top order, Adgemis (21*) and Bonnett (25*) combined for an unbroken 46 run partnership at the death. Their ability to work the singles and turn the strike showed great maturity for such young players. A convincing win followed the next week with Dan Bonnett (3/34) continuing his impressive form with the ball and Col Orchard (2/28) bowling a terrific spell. Dan Bonnett was a pleasure to captain. He bowled an extremely disciplined line and did exactly what was asked of him with bat and ball. He performed at nearly every given opportunity and had an uncanny ability to pick up wickets when we needed them most.

Our form after Christmas was ordinary. A tougher draw and player unavailability meant we put out teams that were not as strong as they could have been. The new year began with two narrow losses in the 1 dayers. With 12 points up for grabs, these were important games and our inability to win the key moments hurt us. We reached 7/137 against Richmond City with Jim Blakely making a hard hitting 42 at

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 18

the top of the order. The brakes were put on with his dismissal and we lost 5/7 in an ordinary display of batting. Johnsen batted through to finish 40* and give us something to defend, but the poor middle order batting proved costly as the target was reached with 1 over to spare (Cull 3/19).

Plenty of runs were scored in an entertaining match against Boronia. Jackson proved a class above, taking 3/26 as Boronia reached 5/191. We fell 20 runs short with Guley (50), Baker (36) and Josh Devine (25*) finding some form with the bat.

A good bowling performance against an undefeated Ashburton restricted them to 147 (Thorn 3/30, Power 2/16). On a deteriorating pitch, the loss of 3 wickets overnight hurt our chances. A strong start by Baker (27) and Harvey Jones (18) on week 2 put us in a good position to win the match, but we lost wickets at crucial times on a pitch that was hard to score on. Dan Bonnett (16*) assessed the conditions better than most, batting with patience and maturity. His efforts weren’t enough as we fell 25 runs short.

We needed to win our final 2 matches to make finals. On a hot and humid day, we arrived at Deepdene to find the covers still on 1 hour before the commencement of play. We lost the toss and were sent in on an ordinary wicket. The state of the wicket made scoring difficult with only Barker (28) at the top of the order and Johnsen (39) getting going late in the innings. Our total of 107 was passed with 3 wickets to spare and our finals hopes were gone. The improved batting performance of Johnsen was a highlight of the season. An improvement in his fitness resulted in greater levels of concentration and he was rewarded with selection in the first XI in the final game.

The final match against eventual premiers Surrey Hills had few highlights. They batted well to be in a commanding position at the tea break on day 1. After tea, Bonnett and Guley bowled tightly to restrict them to 9/221. Guley bowled 26 overs on the bounce to finish with 4/76 in a terrific spell. The best of his four was a wrong’un which trapped an unsuspecting batsman dead in front. His appeal was a down on one knee, genuflect like shout and when the ump raised his finger, all 10 of his teammates rushed to rub his ginger melon in celebration. With a depleted batting line up, we did not get near the total with Harvey Jones (31) the only batsman to show any resistance.

I would like to thank Peter Knox as President, Rick Barker as Chairman of selectors and club captain Jack Joslin for their support. Thanks also to Harvey and Simon Jones for standing in as skipper in my absence and to Pete Guley for his assistance on match day.

Our lack of success this season can be attributed to some poor application in our batting and player unavailability across the first and second X1s (no player played every game in the second XI). Our ladder position was a fair reflection of our performance, but not of our potential or ability. The challenge remains for the second XI to play finals and to push for promotion to B turf. This is certainly a realistic goal.

GO MONTS!

THE THIRD XI

The 3rds had a fantastic season, with a record of 7 wins and 2 draws being enough to finish 4 th and play East Doncaster in a semi- final at Donvale. Unfortunately East Doncaster were too good for us in the Semi and eventually went on to win the flag.

The 2013/2014 had many highlights;

• The improvement of the young Nick Adjemis, this kid has Mont albert Blood flowing through his veins. Nicks 100 N/O against Ringwood not only saved the game but showed all of us what great fighting qualities Nick has, geez I love this kid. • Ben Galtieri what a star won the bowling his 6/35 against Ringwood was outstanding, Ben improves every week, sadly I won’t play with Ben again as I have no doubt he is destined to play in a much higher grade from now on. • Rob Carruthers, if I had to go to war I would want Rob by my side as he never gives up and will fight it out until the very end, Rob won us the game against East Doncaster which set us up to make finals by bowling a maiden over in the 2 nd last over at the postage stamp, an amazing effort. Rob’s batting improved dramatically this year and his innings in the semi final was delight to watch. • Harry Sigh, what can I say, Harry is the best looking Indian not to be in a Bollywood movie, seriously Harry is a good looking man. Harry came a long way this season with both his batting and bowling, however where Harry improved the most was the fact that he started to really care about Mont Albert and he wanted us to win. A great year Harry well done, • Jimmy Wright wow I love this guy, nobody tries harder than Jimmy and when the chips are down and everyone’s tired and all seems lost Jimmy motivates encouragement we won games that we probably shouldn’t have. Thanks mate you are a star. • Rick Barker, great start to the year by the superstar with both the bat and the ball, Rick had a great season. I loved playing with you this year and many thanks for all your help and guidance.

• However the biggest highlight of the season from my point of view was the development and the quality of the kids we have at Mont Albert we are very lucky.

• Thanks to all the players who participated during the season.

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 24

THE 4 TH XI Season 2013/14 was a very enjoyable and successful one.

Despite our disappointing in the semi-final, we achieved ‘one better’ this year. Making the finals and some wonderful development of our many and very talented young players were highlights for our team and the Club.

Some highlights.

• Beating eventual grand finalists, Latrobe, on the last game to secure our spot in the finals.

The effort of all was outstanding as a team but particularly rewarding was the way our young players stepped up to the challenge. Dakshil Patel and Jack Alexander really led the way, taking 7 wickets between them. Jack’s younger brother Harrison had an outstanding debut as an under 14 player, leading the team with positive talk and spectacular catches behind the stumps. The Alexander boys are stars of the future. And Ducky, you had them jumping this year. Keep practicing putting 6 balls on in the corridor and a break out season is yours next year.

• More young stars are on the rise with real depth for the Club .

John Thiele, Nick Creese, Rishabh (‘Im not a bowler. I’m an all-rounder!) Nagpal, Aiden Pearson, Alex Eden Lachowicz, Michael and Simon Harris. Each showed real progress with each at times delivering a match turning impact.

We all enjoyed Rishabh’s big hitting and with his off spin and desire to take a wicket each ball only makes a captain happy to toss him the ball.

• Our twenty year olds really stepped up

Each showed real leadership and encouragement to the younger guys by example. Delighted to see Alex Rathbone putting his head down and batting for long partnerships toward the end of the season. Not to mention our late season discovery of Alex as fast bowler with some real ‘heat’. Next year beckons for something exciting if Alex gets himself fit. Alby Nguyen brought a huge heart and effort to each game. His batting partnership with Hal in the final was great stuff. Eddie Plant the ultimate team man. Gus Lamin’s innings showed real class when he played. And Ben Chipp’s breakthrough innings of 109 n.o. (I must add Ben’s 109 was not only a great highlight for the team and for a Captain who happened to be his Dad!!)

• The experienced players passing on their experience.

Molly had a wonderful season with both bat and ball. Wayne Harris always putting in 100%. Hal and AB deservedly winning the bowling and batting. Hal was outstanding always, but his man of the match in the semi final wonderful.

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 27

THE 5 TH XI

The 2013-14 had a number of ups and downs but overall we had a successful season. This season made up for the disappointment of last year when we squandered our finals chance. This year we made the semi finals but we were not good enough to go on. It was fair to say we were beaten by a better team and it was disappointing that we could not go further.

There were a number of batting highlights this year that included Wayne Harris’s two fifties for the club, Michael Lee’s swashbuckling innings in the lower half of the batting order, and Christian Gorman’s 92 not out that secured finals for us in the last game of the season. Tom Massey’s batting was simply devastating when he had his eye in. He simply smashed the ball straight and it went straight out of the park. However the most explosive innings of the season was from Rishabh Nagpal, an U16. He smashed 40 off fewer balls. He was seeing the ball as big as a melon and I have to genuflect to his skill in dispatching balls to the boundary and then over it.

The one day competition can be tough for bowlers. There is not a lot of room for error. However Tim Rossi always bowled with heart and he had a tough season. Something always seems to happen when he bowled. Sometimes good, sometimes bad but he seemed to get wickets. Ralph Hadden and Albert Nguyen seemed to improve as the season went but I felt they bowled without luck and did not get the success that they deserved. Xavier Siebel started playing after Christmas and each game he improved and got faster and more deadly and Rishabh Nagpal’s off spin was nearly unplayable.

The fielding this year has been good. When we field well, we bowl well. A special mention needs to be given to Jim Alexander for his work as slipper. However there were a number times when we dropped our heads and had to work hard about staying in the game.

To do better, our bowling and batting needs to become more consistent. This year we made scores above 200 but we also made scores of less than 120. A number of times we did not bat our full 40 overs. Our top order was too inconsistent. Too often we relied on the lower middle order to stay in and make runs. This puts our bowlers under pressure.

Numbers this year were strong. There were a number of games were we actually selected a side and people missed out. However there were still games when we were short and I would like to thank Simon Harris for filling in for us during the season.

I would like to thank Rick Barker for his work as chairman of selectors and Jack, Roger, Peter and KR for getting the drinks, cups and other assorted equipment ready each Saturday morning. I would also like to thank the players who kept an eye on my two younger boys and how they graciously accepted their advice on all things cricket. I would especially like to thank the people of the Mont Albert Cricket club and the Committee for the honour of being made a life member. It was a great surprise. Lastly, I would like to thank my wife, Fiona, who very patiently listens to my Saturday afternoon misadventures that happen under the hot Australian summer sun.

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 30

Veterans Report Once again we had four veterans teams entered in the competition, a fantastic effort in a club with five senior teams. The following is a brief summary of how they all went. Weather proved to be an issue for all teams, but overall another enjoyable season. Reds – B Division > 40’s After finishing last season as the losing finalist, we started the 2013-14 year with high hopes despite losing some key players in the off season. We started with a washout and then a good win over Kew where Kew batted first being bowled out for 122 (John Behrendt 4-12) which we then got with 4 wickets to spare of 32 overs (Chris Dunning 32). This was followed by a loss to Surrey Hills where we scored 6/119 of our 36 overs (Jeff Mollison 29) which they chased down easily for 2 down. Next we were up against the favourites, Columbo where after winning the toss we made a poor 5/117 (Mike Wilton 40*). Columbo got there 1 down, the highlight for Mont Albert being Chris Diazkis bowling Asanka Gurusinha who scored 7 test centuries for Sri Lanka. In the last game before Christmas Koonung Heights batted first scoring 4/189 (Chris Diazkis 0-8 off 6). We fell short at 6/147 (Rob Elliot 34, Peter Knox 40*). After Christmas we faced Edinburgh who scored 6/216 (Peter Gartlan 2-29) against which we could only score 2/178 (Rob Grumont 41*, Rob Elliot 40*, Howard Bertus 40*). Finally we faced Deepdene well out of finals contention. Batting first we scored 5/123 (Howard Bertus 40*) which once more wasn’t enough as they got there 4 down. Final result 7 th in the ladder, and the need for some recruiting in the off season. Thanks to Chris Dunning for taking on the roles of both Captain and Manager for the season. Purples – C Division > 40’s After making the finals last year, the Purples started like everyone else with a washout. The season proper started with a poor batting effort against Marcellin OC where we were bowled out for 88. They got the runs comfortably for 5 down, Michael Massey taking 3-11. The next game was against Hawthorn. Once more we batted first scoring 8/152 (Sanjay Fernandes 32, Dave Corrigan 42*). It proved to be not quite enough with Hawthorn getting the runs in the last over (Michael Massey 3-10). After the round 4 match against Clifton Hill was rained out, we then faced Kew with the season on the line, and bowled them out for 113 (Phil Avery 2-18, Michael Massey 3-4, Tim Norris 2-11 and Tom Siebel 2-13). We got there comfortably with Phil Avery scoring 40*. We then made up the game against Clifton Hill scoring a sub par 128 all out (Phil Avery 41*, Michael Massey 42*), but making up for it in the field as we bowled them out for 115 (Michael Massey 3-17). If we won our last two games after Christmas we would make the finals. We started with north Balwyn at home, and bowled them out for 120 (Bruce Wilson 2-15, Tom Seibel 3-17). We made extremely hard work of chasing down this total getting there with 1 wicket to spare, Michael Massey top scoring with 30. Finally we had a must win virtual quarterfinal against North Elphington Red who won the toss and batted first. They were too strong scoring 6/233 (Andrew Youren 3-20, Justin Napier 2-35) before bundling us out for 114 as the run rate pressure proved too much (Dave Corrigan 38). A final position of 5 th meant we just missed out on finals. Thanks to Phil Avery for captaining the side, and to Paul Goessler for managing. Golds – D Division > 40’s After missing the finals on % (one wicket being the difference) last year the Golds were looking forward to a new season. After the obligatory wash out to start, and the loss of a team from the comp, and therefore a bye, we weren’t looking at getting much cricket in. Our first game was against Salesian Old Boys where we scored a very respectable 5/210 (Rick Coenan 30, Jim Alexander 42*, Russell Phillips 43*, Stuart Cherry 33, Don Williams 37*, and no we weren’t at Elgar Park!!) We made hard work of defending this total, and sneaked in off the last ball by 1 run after a very good last over by Ian Steer (1-20). Our

MACC 2013-14 Annual Report 31

bowling and fielding could only get better. Next we played Eley Park, and scored 5/218 (Rick Coenan 34, Tim Norris 40*, Simon Pertile 35*) finishing with a very explosive last 10 overs (and yes we were at Elgar). Bowling & Fielding was much improved and we bowled them out for 129 (Ian Steer 3-19 incl hat- trick, Grant Jackson 2-26, Jason Harvey 2-24). In round 4 we played Chadstone Harlequins who batted first and scored 179 all out (Grant Jackson 3-25, Harvinder Bedi 2-39, Jason Harvey 2-22). We made hard work of the chase getting there in the last over with one wicket to spare (Rick Coenan 42*, Russell Phillips 30, Jim Alexander 39). We then played Burwood at Elgar and scored 8/183 batting first (Russell Phillips 37, Jim Alexander 32, Don Williams 30) Despite them getting off to a cracking start, we managed to peg them back in the second half of their innings, bowling them out for 154 (Don Williams 2-24, Jim Alexander 2-34, David Wooller 4-16). Finally we played Mt Waverley who batted first on an ordinary pitch and scored 8/166 (Don Williams 2-25, Allen Burton 4-13). In reply we scored 103 all out, not great form heading into the finals where we qualified top. In the semi final at Mont Albert Reserve (a real treat for a team that generally doesn’t play there) we were up against Burwood again. We won the toss and batted first scoring 9/137 off our 36 overs (Tim Norris 37). We felt we were on top at drinks, but just couldn’t get the one or two wickets necessary to put them under real pressure, and they got there 5 wickets down with three overs to spare, a disappointing result after finishing top of the table. My thanks to Jim Alexander for captaining the side. Greens >50 The Greens have traditionally struggled for numbers, this year proved to be healthier than has been the norm, we generally got 11+ onto the park. The season like everybody else commenced with the washout, then a home game against Mitcham Yellow who scored 7/181 batting first (Tom Richards 4- 13). We got there in the last over scoring 6/188 (Henk Van Kruining 42*, Phil Cookson 36*, Andy Dalrymple 35). We next had a loss out at Warrandyte where 8/125 (Mike Delves 43*) wasn’t enough and they got them in a close game (Luke Pich 3-12). Our next game was rained out, then we played the Box Hill North super Kings at home, scoring 5/176 batting first (Luke Pich 43*, Ian Steer 40*), and then bowling them out for 147 (Mike Delves 2-8, Luke Pich 2-25, Ralph Hadden 2-25). After Christmas is was on the road again against the South Warrandyte Hawks. A win would guarantee finals action. They batted first scoring 6/179 (Jeff Mollison 2-13), but we managed to chase it down with Geoff Curtis scoring 43*, Peter Ashton 42* and Andy Dalrymple 33) ensuring we got to 4/182. The final round robin would decide our position in the top 4, batting first against North Balwyn we scored 156 (Laurie Wordsworth 32, Henk Van Kruining 33) but had a poor day in the field as they scored 0/161. Qualifying 4 th , it was back out to Warrandyte for our semi final. Losing the toss we were asked to bat, scoring 8/177 (Leigh denning 34, Peter Ashton 45*), a total we couldn’t defend as they scored 7/180 off 30.2 overs (Andy Dalrymple 3-15). Thanks to Peter Ashton for captaining the side, and Ralph Hadden for managing the team. Finally on behalf of all the Veterans sides thanks to the club, Peter Knox the president, the committee for its support, Jack for organising the BBQ food, and all the players for continuing to turn out and support the club. THE JUNIORS

In August 2013 I received an email from one of our outgoing U16 players. Little did I know, this email would set in motion a chain of events that would forever change the ECA. At the insistence of James Guley, who had a gaggle of supporters in his corner, we submitted a request to introduce a new competition in the ECA juniors; the Under 18’s. Whilst only four teams competed throughout the season in this competition, the MACC group made the most of their opportunities to post personal best achievements in all areas. Not to mention the dominating finals series before which we all genuflect and thank our ancestors for the creation of melon pie.

This season also saw the first MACC team to win a T20 competition in the ECA. In their final at Donvale reserve, the U16A’s snatched the victory away from Camberwell in the dying moments. Led by the in- swing master, Ben Galtieri, the team was able to hold off the hard hitting Camberwell in a low scoring affair. Congratulations!

In addition to the success of the U18’s and U16A’s, the club had a fantastic season that saw great improvement and development at all levels.

The U10’s worked tirelessly to improve technique, develop a competitive mindset and have a tremendous time. A number of talented players were unveiled that will no doubt play a large role in the future of MACC.

The U12’s also had a brilliant year that was highlighted by incredible individual performances, cohesive teamwork, and the steep progression of a young group of cricketers who took the competition by storm and only narrowly missed the grand final. The U12B team improved markedly and was rewarded in the last game with their first win for the season. The U12A’s showed that age is no barrier in the U12’s and young teams can still give the competition a good shake. Players from both these teams have a great future and success is likely to be just around the corner. Congratulations to Jack Woods, Joel Guley and Harrish Kannan for playing representative cricket.

For the U14’s, I suspect that season 2013-14 will be viewed by all as a foundation building year. Firstly, the U14B’s stepped up a grade this season showing immense grit and determination throughout the season to record three memorable victories and improve greatly. Secondly, the U14A team (composed almost entirely by bottom age players) competed amiably with the more seasoned competition to show that come 2014-15, they will be the group to beat. Congratulations to Harrison Alexander and Jakob Devine for their inclusion in the ECA U14 representative team.

The U16A’s and C’s will see 2013-14 as a season of missed opportunities. Like so many U16 teams before them, they both faltered at the semi-final stage. This reinforces the fact that premierships are difficult to win in any competition. Nevertheless, both teams had fantastic years that were punctuated by strong team performances and individual achievements. The U16C’s combined with Canterbury to field a combined team. The batting strength of MACC complimented the bowling strength of Canterbury to form a formidable outfit. The U16A’s also had a tremendous year. Congratulations to Dakshil Patel and Rishabh Nagpal on their inclusion in the U16 ECA representative team. I’d also like to extend the club’s

congratulations to Andrew Young on making the U15 Victorian team, a fantastic effort and a positive sign for the future.

Lastly, I need to thank all of those that assisted me this season as either a coach or team manager. Usha Stinissen, Paul Mallett, Michael McNeill, Tom Richards, Stuart Cherry, James Guley, Peter Guley, Phill Woods, Gordon Stewart, Lawry Lanzon, Steve DeLacy, Jim Alexander, Paul Devine, Ian Steer, Rose Eden, Tim Norris, Wayne Harris and Tim Wilton. Thank you all for your huge contributions this season. I could not have done this role without your support.
