    COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.

He published his first collection of short stories with the title “Hithaka Venasa” in 1963. Since then on his way to celebrate the 74th birthday this year he has added 67 books to his credit. The uniqueness in Nimal is that his books are on a variety of fields, from marketing, travellers notes, novels, short stories, poetry, religion and Research. His contributions to the media, youth work, marketing and sales training has been acknowledged. He has made substantial contributions to culture, media and journalism in Sri Lanka. He has served as an Editor on newspapers, produced and presented programmes for television and radio. He is known to be an engaging presenter, trainer and a sales consultant and had conducted several hundred key events in Sri Lanka. As the former Deputy Director of the National Youth Services Council, his leadership led to the revival of culture, establishment of sports and leadership amongst the youth in Sri Lanka. He is an expert in public relations and in the field of sales and marketing. Thomas' Cricket Match, is played over 3 days in the month of March in the city of Colombo. S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia, a private Anglican school has about 2,500 boys on roll, while Royal college Colombo, a government-run non-denominational school accommodates approximately 8,000, making it the largest school in the country. Origins of School Cricket in Ceylon The early origins of S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia date ba ck to 1851 when it was located in Mutwal, Colombo. It is the first Ceylonese school to play cricket - beginning 1864 against the Small Pass Cricket Club in Colombo. This is also the first recorded instance of a cricket match between two Ceylonese teams pla yed in Ceylon. S. Thomas' was represented in this historic match by G. A. Edward, W. De. Livera, K. Banda, S. H. Pereira, L. Sepion, B. A. Senanayake, C. de Silva, L. T. Nolan, E. de Hoedt, H. M. Fernando and A. Perera. As there was no other school playin g cricket at the time, from 1864 to 1877, S. Thomas' played against the clubs and other teams that were in existence in Colombo, Negombo and Kalutara, including the elitist European dominated Colombo Cricket Club.
