    A WALK IN TEDDINGTON: 2 The Grove Estate and Teddington Lock Start and finish at the Ferry Road traffic lights (1). This walk is approx. 2.7 miles in total Ferry Road goes to the river in one direction and to the High Street past the church in the other; Kingston Road goes off towards Kingston, and Manor Road (2) heads to Twickenham. Manor Road was built some time after 1860. Before then, the old road from Kingston to Twickenham made the sharp turn round the church from Kingston Road to Twickenham Road. The church of St Mary with St Alban (3) was the old parish church of St Mary, parts dating from the 16th century. During the incumbency of the Rev Stephen Hales (1709-61) much rebuilding was carried out, the north aisle and the tower being added. The church was continually too small for the increasing population, and in the 19th century more enlargements were carried out until a new church seemed to be the only solution. So the church of St Alban the Martyr (4) was built on the opposite side of the road. The building, which is in the French Gothic style on the scale of a cathedral, was opened in July 1896. When the new church was opened the old one was closed, but not everybody liked the new church and by popular demand St Mary’s was repaired and services were held in both churches until 1972. But by this time the number of worshippers had diminished and running expenses had risen, meaning that two churches could no longer be maintained.

    1 The slavery connections of Marble Hill House Dr Laurence Brown School of Arts, Histories and Cultures University of the Manchester June 2010 2 This report was commissioned in November 2008 as part of a project to explore the slavery connections of four historic properties in the stewardship of English Heritage. Archival research was carried out on Bolsover Castle, Brodsworth Hall, Marble Hill House, and Northington Grange to examine the impact of slavery-generated wealth on the development of these properties. The research follows the 2007 survey by Miranda Kaufmann on the family history of 33 English Heritage properties and their slavery connections. Using databases on the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the compensation paid to British slave-owners in the 1830s, Kaufmann’s study focused on those who owned property in slave colonies, held government office in such colonies, invested in slaving or traded in slave produced goods, were engaged in abolitionist debates or legal decisions on slavery, or who owned black servants. The aims of this report are to provide more detailed information on the economic, social, and cultural connections that linked Marble Hill House to Atlantic slavery. The report examines the relative importance of slave-generated wealth in the fortunes of Marble Hill’s occupants and how these changed over time.     CULTURAL PARTNERSHIP STRATEGY 2015 - 2019 FOREWORD I am delighted to present Richmond upon Thames’ Cultural Partnership Strategy 2015 – 2019. The strategy defines the Borough’s commitment to the creative arts and aims to ensure that Richmond continues to be known for providing a high quality cultural environment for both residents and visitors alike. Culture enriches the lives of everyone and makes a valuable contribution to the health and wellbeing of our community. Through our Cultural Partnership Strategy I believe we have the opportunity to extend the quality and impact of the arts sector. It has been a pleasure to see the Borough’s cultural community working together to develop and shape this strategy. It is exciting to see the commitments that have been made and I am thrilled by the possibilities that this will bring to us all in Richmond upon Thames over the next four years. The strategy outlines the Cultural Partnership’s shared vision for culture in the Borough. We believe collaboration across the local cultural sector will achieve the greatest benefit for residents in terms of our individual lives; our community; individual wellbeing and the local economy. The Strategy focuses on three goals which we believe our resources can most effectively be invested, as individual organisations, and through the Council’s cultural services and commissioned activities.
