Also, Hammersmith Bridge will be closed to pedestrians for the race so Chiswick Pier is a fantastic alternative viewing point.     A WALK IN TEDDINGTON: 1 Start and finish at St Mary with St Alban Church The old village of Teddington stretched from the river to the railway bridge, which was the site of the village pond through which the railway was built in the early 1860s. The church of St Mary (1) was the old parish church, parts dating from the 16th century. During the incumbency of the Rev Stephen Hales (1709-61) much rebuilding was carried out, the north aisle and the tower being added. The church was too small for the increasing population and in the 19th century more enlargements were carried out until a new church seemed to be the only solution. So the church of St Alban the Martyr (2) was built on the opposite side of the road. The building, which is in the French Gothic style on the scale of a cathedral, was opened in July1896. However, plans were over-ambitious and the money ran out before the west end of the nave was completed. When the new church was opened the old one was closed, but not everybody liked the new church so St Mary’s was repaired and services were held in both churches until 1972. By this time the number of worshippers had diminished and running expenses had risen so much that two churches could no longer be maintained. St Alban’s became redundant and was to be pulled down. Vandals damaged what remained of the internal fittings and part of the copper roof was taken before the destruction was stopped.

    A WALK IN TEDDINGTON: 2 The Grove Estate and Teddington Lock Start and finish at the Ferry Road traffic lights (1). This walk is approx. 2.7 miles in total Ferry Road goes to the river in one direction and to the High Street past the church in the other; Kingston Road goes off towards Kingston, and Manor Road (2) heads to Twickenham. Manor Road was built some time after 1860. Before then, the old road from Kingston to Twickenham made the sharp turn round the church from Kingston Road to Twickenham Road. We have seen a further increase in the number of people sleeping rough this year and a steep increase in the number of people struggling with other types of homelessness. The proportion of our clients with complex health and social care needs has increased again and we are concerned by the rising number of street homeless women and young people in our services. In a context of continued funding cuts across the homelessness sector, we are pleased that our income has remained consistent this year. This allows us to continue to deliver our strategic aims of helping the most vulnerable people in our community effectively – people who have often failed to engage with alternative support and who struggle to access mainstream services.

    Over 1000 years of Barnes History Timeline from 925 to 2015 925 Barnes, formerly part of the Manor of Mortlake owned by the Archbishop of Canterbury, is given by King Athelstan to the Dean and Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral. 1085 Grain sufficient to make 3 weeks supply of bread and beer for the Cathedral’s live-in Canons must be sent from Barnes to St Paul’s annually. Commuted to money payment late 15th Century. 1086 Domesday Book records Barnes valued for taxation at £7 p.a. Estimated population 50-60. 1100 - 1150 Original St Mary‘s Parish Church built at this time (Archaeological Survey 1978/9). 1181 Ralph, Dean of St Paul’s, visits Barnes, Wednesday 28th Jan to assess the value of the church and manor. The priest has 10 acres of Glebe Land and a tenth of the hay crop. 1215 Richard de Northampton, Priest at the Parish Church. Archbishop Stephen Langton said to have re-consecrated the newly enlarged church on his return journey from Runnymede after the sealing of Magna Carta. 1222 An assessment of the Manor of Barnes by Robert the Dean. Villagers must work 3 days a week on the demesne (aka the Barn Elms estate) and give eggs, chickens and grain as in 1085 in return for strips of land in the open fields. Estimated population 120. 1388 Living of Barnes becomes a Rectory. Rector John Lynn entitled to Great Tithes (10% of all produce) and right of fishing in Barnes Pond. 1415 William de Millebourne dies at Milbourne House.
