My research has explored questions on the evolution of color signals, color vision, and flight morphology. I am particularly interested in understanding the evolution of color signals, how they are perceived by intended and unintended receivers and the role of these audiences in driving population and species divergence. I also study the evolution of flight morphology because wings are large conspicuous body surfaces that can be also used as motion signal vehicles for intra- and interspecific communication. -

Die Verbesserung des ökologischen Zustandes der heimischen Fließgewässer stellt eine der größten zukünftigen Herausfor- derungen für die österreichische Wasserwirtschaft dar. Das Fließgewässer-Netz in Oberösterreich umfasst insgesamt etwa 18.000 km. Von den Gewässern mit einem Einzugsgebiet > 10km2 (Länge 5.400 km) erreichen nur knapp 14 % den sehr guten oder guten ökologischen Zustand (BMLFUW 2010). Es gilt insbesondere, die Durchgängigkeit des Längskontinuums wiederherzustellen, Gewässer mit Umland und Zubringern zu vernetzen sowie die Habitatvielfalt monotoner Flussläufe durch Restrukturierungen zu steigern. In vielen Fällen erfolgen diese Maßnahmen im Zusammenhang mit Projekten zur Erhöhung der Hochwassersicherheit. Survey Guidance
Dragonfly Survey Guidance The following document provides advice for recorders wanting to carry out more in depth dragonfly surveys, for example, to assist in Priority Site Assessment, or for site monitoring and conservation purposes. This level of surveying requires continued recording into the medium-long term, an appropriate level of commitment is needed. Weather conditions Dragonfly activity is highly dependent on environmental conditions; therefore, surveys should be carried out during sunny, calm and dry weather conditions. Recorders looking to carry out yearly comparisons should consider recording weather conditions as this may account for some variations in records. Timing The main Dragonfly flight period is between May and September. Surveying species diversity: Different species have different flight periods. Thus, at least 3 site visits should be made, spread out through the Dragonfly flight season, in order to encounter as many different Dragonfly species as possible. Surveying an important species: If the survey project has a target species then at least 3 site visits should be carried out within its flight period in order to ascertain its maximum abundance. Standardisation Before launching into recording carry out a preliminary site visit to plan how you are going to carry out the survey. It is important that the survey route and method are identical during each visit as variations will influence the results. It is therefore recommended that recorders map their survey site and route, and take notes to guide themselves, and others, during subsequent visits. Equipment Binoculars, a camera or net may be needed to identify the more difficult species. Remember to note what equipment to use. -

[email protected] Resumen: Se comunica el hallazgo de una nueva zona de cría de Lestes dryas Kirby, 1890, un odonato considerado raro en toda Europa, en Andalucía y la tercera cita de adultos para Andalucía. Palabras clave: Lestes dryas, Lestidae, Odonata, Andalucía. Lestes dryas se caracteriza por tener una distribución holártica, estando presente tanto en América del Norte como en Europa y Asia. En Europa, sus poblaciones son más escasas conforme se desciende en latitud, de forma que en la región mediterránea se encuentra principalmente en zonas montañosas (Askew, 1988). En el norte de África se ha observado sólo en zonas montañosas del Rif y el Atlas marroquí (Jacquemin & Boudot, 1999). Existen citas de L. dryas en toda la Península Ibérica, pero en la mitad sur sus poblaciones conocidas son muy escasas (Ocha- ran Larrondo, 1987). En Andalucía existen datos referentes a varias capturas de adultos realizadas a finales de la década de los setenta, las primeras observaciones corresponden a 1977 en varias charcas cercanas a El Rocío, en Huelva (Dufour, 1978); posterior- mente sólo existe otra cita en junio de 1978 en el arroyo Parrilla (La Granjuela, Córdoba) (Ferreras Romero, 1982). Asimismo hay una cita de recolección de larvas en el río Guaduares en 1988 (Villalu- enga del Rosario, Cádiz) (Jödicke, 1996). El medio fluvial no parece el habitual de las poblaciones de esta especie que, en el resto de su área de distribución, están asociadas a pozas poco profundas, charcas temporales y pequeños embalses (Askew, 1988).
