Colin Clark (Redmayne) was an ambitious 23-year-old determined to make a name for himself in film. As summer gets underway, Clark manages to land a position as a production assistant on the film “The Prince and the Showgirl,” starring Marilyn Monroe (Williams) and Sir Laurence Olivier (Branagh). Monroe had just gotten married to playwright Arthur Miller (Scott), and the newlyweds were on their honeymoon as production got underway. Disconcerting as it may be, all ill feelings are forgotten when I watch an auditorium of eighteen- to twenty-one-year-olds transported by the emotions, the humor, and the compulsions of his cinema. But certainly the college classroom is not the only guardian of Hitchcock ’ s fl ame. His fi lms still play at retrospectives, in fi lm festivals, in the rising number of fi lm studies classes in high schools, on Turner Classic Movies, and other networks devoted to the “ oldies. ” The wonderful Bates Motel has emerged as a TV serial prequel to Psycho , illustrating the formative years of Norman Bates; it will see a second season in the coming months. Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour are still in strong syndication. Both his fi lms and television shows do very well in collections and singly on Amazon and other e-commerce sites. -

Marilyn Monroe and Niagara
Icons are all around us, and often we don’t even question it. So ingrained is their power their image becomes synonymous with what they represent. The Statue of Liberty, a gift from the French, has come to represent a cultural welcome, freedom from oppression. After thousands of immigrants arrivals and generations of hardship, the sighting of the Statue in New York harbor has become iconic. Fifteen minutes of fame does not an icon make. An icon requires survival of a multistep process, which pushes the image to its limits. Firstly, an icon needs to have common roots, at least one foot among the masses. This is what allows the spectator to take ownership and feel connected and makes them a viable icon. An icon cannot be a representative of a group if it is not one of what it stands for. Secondly, the icon while remaining at its base “common”, must have an exceptional, unique qualtiy whic makes it the best example of something. It is the fastest, the highest, or the furthest. After it gains popularity because of these two first qualities, it then must stand a rigorous litany of deconstruction, digestion, and interrogation, before it can reach the fourth phase of being praised, lauded and embraced as the quintessential one of its kind. The irony is that once it claims icon status, all that made it so interesting to begin with has been stripped away. It has been so contorted, manipulated as to be simplified for the masses that only that one outstanding unique quality remains, and everything else is ignored. -

FRYER LIBRARY Manuscript Finding Aid UQFL87 Colin Clark Papers Size 36 boxes Contents Correspondence; own publications and writings; book reviews; newspaper cuttings; slides; index cards. Collection reflects interests and involvement in politics, agriculture, economics, economic policy, demography, public finance, international data, religion and ancient history. Correspondence includes letters to and from John Maynard Keynes and B.A. Santamaria. Collection also includes photocopies of papers in Colin Clark Collection, Brasenose College, Oxford. Date range 1907 to 1986 (bulk of collection 1931 to 1986) Biography Colin Clark was born on 2 November 1905 in London. He was educated at Winchester College and Oxford and Cambridge Universities. He graduated first in chemistry and then in economics. He described himself as ‘an academic economist with a considerable international reputation.’ He was a prodigious author of economic texts, articles and papers. He was an economic adviser to various governments in the United Kingdom, India and Australia. From 1938 to 1953 he advised the Treasury Department of the Queensland Government. In 1978, he joined the Economics Department of the University of Queensland as a research consultant, where he remained for eleven years. The Road To Emmy, Part 6: Feedback From Directors and Cinematographers Director Jarrold Earns Nomination For The Girl; LOS ANGELES, September 06, 2013, Robert Goldrich --- This is a tale of two first-time primetime Emmy Award nominees: director Julian Jarrold, and DP John Pardue both nominated for The Girl, an HBO telefilm. The Girl depicts the obsession of director Alfred Hitchcock (portrayed by Toby Jones) with actress Tippi Hedren (played by Sienna Miller). When his romantic overtures are rebuffed by Hedren, Hitchcock turns abusive and sadistic towards her during their collaborations on the movies The Birds and Marnie. The Girl earned a total of six Emmy nominations: Jarrold for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special; Jones for Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie; Imelda Staunton (as Alma Hitchcock) for Supporting Actress; John Pardue for Cinematography; Philip Miller for Music Composition; and Diana Cilliers and Melissa Moritz for Costumes. (DP Pardue is profiled in ‘The Road To Emmy’, Part 6.) Jarrold said being an Emmy nominee is "incredibly exciting. We made a small film that's received fantastic exposure and response." Among the biggest challenges posed by The Girl, reflected Jarrold, were physically suspending disbelief for Jones' portrayal of Hitchcock and recreating the attack sequence in The Birds. On the former front, Jarrold described Jones as "a wonderful comedian and actor who transformed himself into Hitchcock. Toby spent a lot of time in makeup every morning. We didn't want a wax look, he had to be real and lifelike in character. Toby perfected the voice. -

Born in Burnham Deepdale, Norfolk on 29 May 1959 the second son of parents Anthony and Sara, RUPERT JAMES HECTOR EVERETT is of English, Scottish, Irish and more distant German and Dutch ancestry. His father, who died in 2009, was a Major in the British Army who later worked in business. When he was six, Rupert was taken into Braintree for his first trip to a cinema. There was a long queue, the child was typically fretful and the grown-ups thought about leaving, but finally decided not to: And so my mother bought the fateful tickets and unknowingly guided me through a pair of swing doors into the rest of my life ... ... Those huge curtains silently swished open and Mary Poppins sprang across the footlights and into my heart. After preliminary instruction from a governess, Everett was educated at Far- leigh House School, Andover from seven to thirteen then at Ampleforth College, Yorkshire from thirteen to sixteen, at which point he absconded to London to become an actor. After two years of living the bohemian life to the full (if not excess), he won a coveted place at the Central School of Speech and Drama, but after attending for two tempestuous and more or less unrewarding years was told not to return for a third.
