Disconcerting as it may be, all ill feelings are forgotten when I watch an auditorium of eighteen- to twenty-one-year-olds transported by the emotions, the humor, and the compulsions of his cinema. But certainly the college classroom is not the only guardian of Hitchcock ’ s fl ame. • The Road to Emmy.Pages
The Road To Emmy, Part 6: Feedback From Directors and Cinematographers Director Jarrold Earns Nomination For The Girl; LOS ANGELES, September 06, 2013, Robert Goldrich --- This is a tale of two first-time primetime Emmy Award nominees: director Julian Jarrold, and DP John Pardue both nominated for The Girl, an HBO telefilm. The Girl depicts the obsession of director Alfred Hitchcock (portrayed by Toby Jones) with actress Tippi Hedren (played by Sienna Miller). When his romantic overtures are rebuffed by Hedren, Hitchcock turns abusive and sadistic towards her during their collaborations on the movies The Birds and Marnie. The Girl earned a total of six Emmy nominations: Jarrold for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special; Jones for Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie; Imelda Staunton (as Alma Hitchcock) for Supporting Actress; John Pardue for Cinematography; Philip Miller for Music Composition; and Diana Cilliers and Melissa Moritz for Costumes. (DP Pardue is profiled in ‘The Road To Emmy’, Part 6.) Jarrold said being an Emmy nominee is "incredibly exciting. We made a small film that's received fantastic exposure and response." Among the biggest challenges posed by The Girl, reflected Jarrold, were physically suspending disbelief for Jones' portrayal of Hitchcock and recreating the attack sequence in The Birds. On the former front, Jarrold described Jones as "a wonderful comedian and actor who transformed himself into Hitchcock. Toby spent a lot of time in makeup every morning. We didn't want a wax look, he had to be real and lifelike in character. Toby perfected the voice.

  • Rupert Everett ~ 36 Screen Credits
Rupert Everett ~ 36 Screen Credits Look at that lip. Hauteur, condescension, disdain writ large. "I am a very limited actor. There's a certain amount I can do and that's it," said Everett in 2014. Maybe so, but - see My Best Friend's Wedding, An Ideal Husband, Separate Lies or Unconditional Love - how well he does it. Born in Burnham Deepdale, Norfolk on 29 May 1959 the second son of parents Anthony and Sara, RUPERT JAMES HECTOR EVERETT is of English, Scottish, Irish and more distant German and Dutch ancestry. His father, who died in 2009, was a Major in the British Army who later worked in business. When he was six, Rupert was taken into Braintree for his first trip to a cinema. There was a long queue, the child was typically fretful and the grown-ups thought about leaving, but finally decided not to: And so my mother bought the fateful tickets and unknowingly guided me through a pair of swing doors into the rest of my life ... ... Those huge curtains silently swished open and Mary Poppins sprang across the footlights and into my heart. After preliminary instruction from a governess, Everett was educated at Far- leigh House School, Andover from seven to thirteen then at Ampleforth College, Yorkshire from thirteen to sixteen, at which point he absconded to London to become an actor. After two years of living the bohemian life to the full (if not excess), he won a coveted place at the Central School of Speech and Drama, but after attending for two tempestuous and more or less unrewarding years was told not to return for a third.

  • 2 Days in NEW York PRESENTED by ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
The Premieres program showcases some of the most highly anticipated dramatic films of the coming year. Catch world premieres and the latest work from established directors at the Sundance Film Festival before they create a splash at local theatres. 2 DAYS IN New York DIRECTOR: Julie Delpy France, 2011, 91 min., color English and French with English subtitles Marion and Mingus live cozily—perhaps too cozily—with their cat and two young children from previous relationships. However, when Marion’s jolly father (played by director Delpy’s real-life dad), her oversexed sister, and her sister’s outrageous boyfriend unceremoniously descend upon them for a visit, it initiates two unforgettable days that will test Marion and Mingus’s relationship. With their unwitting racism and sexual frankness, the French triumvirate hilariously has no boundaries or filters . and no person is left unscathed in its wake. Directed and cowritten by Julie Delpy, 2 Days in New York is a deliciously PRESENTED by Entertainment Weekly witty romp. One of the pleasures of this follow-up film to 2 Days in Paris is the addition of Chris Rock, who—amid the Gallic mayhem—convincingly plays the straight man as Marion’s hipster American boyfriend. With great skill and energy, Delpy heightens cultural differences to comedic extremes but also manages to show that sometimes change is the best solution to a relationship that’s been pushed to its limit.—K.Y. TREASURES FROM THE YALE FILM ARCHIVE SUNDAY AN ONGOING SERIES OF CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY FILMS PRESENTED IN 35MM BY THE YALE FILM STUDY CENTER SEPTEMBER 8, 2019 2 PM • WHITNEY HUMANITIES CENTER PRESENTED WITH SUPPORT FROM ORLANDOORLANDO PAUL L. JOSKOW ’70 M.PHIL., ’72 PH.D. In Sally Potter’s ORLANDO, a young nobleman played by Tilda Swinton is given a command by his queen: “Do not fade, do not wither, do not grow old.” From there, the character begins a 400-year journey—struggling throughout to meet expectations around o. love, poetry, politics, society, sex, and childbirth—and, incidentally, changes gender along the way. This is, as Anne Ciecko describes N it, a “transgender, transgenre, and transnational” story, adapted from the novel by Virginia Woolf. “With Aleksei Rodionov’s evocative S 16 E cinematography creating a storybook feel, Potter’s swift navigation of eras feels at once epic and restrained,” writes Eric Kohn. “Pot- A S O N ter simply places Swinton as Swinton in a variety of contexts and lets the varying juxtapositions speak volumes about gender roles throughout history. The outcome is a radical anti-narrative that resists conventional emotional shortcuts.” ORLANDO was Potter’s second feature film, and one that was difficult to finance due to the perceived “unfilmability” of the source material and the commercial failure of her first feature, 1983’s THE GOLD DIRECTED BY SALLY POTTER DIGGERS. It became an international co-production, with funding from the UK, Russia, Italy, France, and SCREENPLAY BY SALLY POTTER the Netherlands. Filming locations included UK sites as well as St.
