What’s in a name? A Lesson from A Boy Named Sue

May 16, 2021 Order of Service Sevent Sunday of Eastr WELCOME

Our service follows a liturgical tradition handed down to us since the time of the Apostles. Please follow along, and participate by reading the portions in bold. Some people choose to follow the ancient Jewish tradition (see Ezekiel 9) of making a “cross” sign at certain portions of the . Those wishing to do so, may, at portions marked with a ☩ sign.

We have modified our liturgy today to include portions from the 2019 for the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). This includes prayers, confessions, and creeds from the past 2000 years of church history! For more information, visit: http://www.anglicanchurch.net/?/main/texts_for_common_prayer. It also includes all the scripture readings from the Revised Common , used by Anglicans, Reformed, Lutherans, and other Christian Traditions worldwide.

As Christians in the Anglican Tradition, we follow the Church Calendar in order to establish a life-rhythm whereby we regularly focus on various aspects of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the gift of the . Doing so helps us better understand how all these aspects of the Christian Narrative intersect with our everyday lives.

During the Season of , we focus on the glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ; that world changing event whereby redemption was accomplished and the power of sin, death, and the devil were conquered.

(Silent Confession)

ABSOLUTION (John 20:23) Absolution means “to grant forgiveness”. The words the minister shares here are Christ’s words of forgiveness to His children. Minister here reads comfortable words from scripture, then says: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, (+) confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, 16 “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the Book of , “‘May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it’; and “‘Let another take his office.’

21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men become with us a witness to his resurrection.” 23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

RESPONSE Psalm 1 Beatus vir qui non abiit

1 Happy are they who have not walked 4 It is not so with the wicked; * in the counsel of the wicked, * they are like chaff which the wind blows away. nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful! 5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes, * 2 Their delight is in the law of the Lord, * nor the sinner in the council of the righteous. and they meditate on his law day and night. 6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, * 3 They are like trees planted by streams of water, but the way of the wicked is doomed. bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; * everything they do shall prosper.

EPISTLE READING 1 John 5:9-13 English Standard Version

9 If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.

Reader: Reading the Holy Gospel ☩ of our Lord Jesus Christ ☩, according to John chapter 17 ☩. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

John 17:6-19 English Standard Version

6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.

Reader: The gospel of the Lord. Congregation: Praise to you, Lord Christ! THE MESSAGE AND DISCUSSION

What’s In A Name? (A Lesson from A Boy Named Sue) Fr. Joshua Lickter

After the message, we always set aside time for any questions or discussion related to the message or scripture. Feel free to text Fr. Josh at 530-559-1864, or just raise your hand and ask, and he will answer if time permits.

SPECIAL SONG Every week we utilize a special pop song to help us teach the message,The Apostle Paul utilized a similar method in Acts 17, 1 Corinthians 15:33, and Titus 1:12, where he quoted popular poets and philosophers to help communicate the gospel.

"A Boy Named Sue” Johnny Cash Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes And he went down, but to my surprise, My daddy left home when I was three He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear. And he didn't leave much to ma and me But I busted a chair right across his teeth Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze. And we crashed through the wall and into the street Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and But the meanest thing that he ever did the beer. Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue." I tell ya, I've fought tougher men Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke But I really can't remember when, And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk, He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile. It seems I had to fight my whole life through. I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss, Some gal would giggle and I'd get red He went for his gun and I pulled mine first, And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head, He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile. I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue." And he said: "Son, this world is rough Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean, And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough My fist got hard and my wits got keen, And I knew I wouldn't be there to help ya along. I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame. So I give ya that name and I said goodbye But I made a vow to the moon and stars I knew you'd have to get tough or die That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars And it's the name that helped to make you strong." And kill that man who gave me that awful name. He said: "Now you just fought one hell of a fight Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July And I know you hate me, and you got the right And I just hit town and my throat was dry, To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do. I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew. But ya ought to thank me, before I die, At an old saloon on a street of mud, For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye There at a table, dealing stud, Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you "Sue.'" Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me "Sue." I got all choked up and I threw down my gun Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad And I called him my pa, and he called me his son, From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had, And I came away with a different point of view. And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye. And I think about him, now and then, He was big and bent and gray and old, Every time I try and every time I win, And I looked at him and my blood ran cold And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him And I said: "My name is 'Sue!' How do you do! Bill or George! Anything but Sue! I still hate that Now your gonna die!!" name! Please stand if you are able (4th Century) This creed, drafted at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, responded to the heretical teachings of Arius, who preached Jesus as a non- eternal, created being. At the Council of Constantinople in 381 AD, this creed underwent further modification, in order to better communicate a Biblical understanding of the Trinity. It uses the word “catholic” to refer to the universal church, consisting of Christ followers throughout the ages, as opposed to a particular denomination. Together with the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed has helped establish the boundaries that define “Christian” and unify followers of Christ for almost 2000 years.

The following version of the Creed is used in the 2019 Book of Common Prayer. It is a newer English translation, that better reflects the language of the original Creed in Greek. The phrase “and the Son” †(Latin: filioque) is not in the original Greek text. The Coptic and Orthodox Traditions do not use it. Its recitation is now optional in ACNA Congregations.

Minister: Followers of Christ, what do you believe? Minister & People: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son],† who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead ☩, and the life of the world to come.

Amen. You may be seated

*”Catholic” means “universal” or “true”. It does not refer to a particular denomination or tradition. MINISTRY OF HOLY COMMUNION The second section of our service, The Ministry of The Holy Communion, focuses on the sacrifices and praise that we, and all the saints throughout history, have given to God in response to all He has done for us through His Son, Jesus Christ. Many of these words have been sung or recited by Christ followers around the world for over 1800 years!

OFFERING OURSELVES AND OUR GIFTS

Christ followers support the church’s mission and ministry through offering a sacrificial portion of our resources–time, talents, possessions–as an act of faith and gratitude in response to God’s grace. This pattern presents itself to us throughout the scriptures. (See, for example, Deuteronomy 26; Proverbs 3: 8,9; Malachi 3:10) For many at Incarnation, it is easier to give online. OFFERTORY PRAYER

Minister & People: Through Christ may we continually offer to God the sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his Name. May we not neglect to do good and to share what we have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Amen. (-Based on Hebrews 13:15, 16) OFFERING SONG

Minister: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord: for he is the true Paschal Lamb, which was offered for us, and has taken away the sin of the world; who by his death has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again has restored us to everlasting life.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord, Hosannah!

Minister: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son Jesus Christ into the world for our salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the Cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he ascended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” ☩

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the , which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” ☩

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
