Incarnation Anglican Church What’s in a name? A Lesson from A Boy Named Sue May 16, 2021 Order of Service Sevent Sunday of Eastr WELCOME Our service follows a liturgical tradition handed down to us since the time of the Apostles. Please follow along, and participate by reading the portions in bold. Some people choose to follow the ancient Jewish tradition (see Ezekiel 9) of making a “cross” sign at certain portions of the liturgy. Those wishing to do so, may, at portions marked with a ☩ sign. We have modified our liturgy today to include portions from the 2019 Book of Common Prayer for the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). This includes prayers, confessions, and creeds from the past 2000 years of church history! For more information, visit: http://www.anglicanchurch.net/?/main/texts_for_common_prayer. It also includes all the scripture readings from the Revised Common Lectionary, used by Anglicans, Reformed, Lutherans, and other Christian Traditions worldwide. As Christians in the Anglican Tradition, we follow the Church Calendar in order to establish a life-rhythm whereby we regularly focus on various aspects of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Doing so helps us better understand how all these aspects of the Christian Narrative intersect with our everyday lives. During the Season of Easter, we focus on the glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ; that world changing event whereby redemption was accomplished and the power of sin, death, and the devil were conquered. CHILDREN’S MINISTRY If you have any children, please contact our children’s ministry supervisor, Lorraine Loria, so we can serve you and your children better! (916) 778-9892. All of our child care workers are Ministry Safe certified, and have had full background checks. MINISTRY OF THE WORD OF GOD Our service is divided in to two sections: the Ministry of the Word of God, and the Ministry of the Holy Communion. The first section primarily focuses on the scriptures, in light of all Jesus Christ has accomplished for us, as they are prayed, confessed, and explained. Strengthen our immune systems to resist viral infections during this time, grant wisdom to the physicians who care for the sick, and grant them extra protection as they care for others. And for those who are currently ill, we pray for healing and strength, and for grace until such time as full recovery occurs. All this we ask through Jesus Christ, our Lord and healer, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit rules and reigns forever and ever, Amen.” Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ☩ now and forever. Amen. CONFESSION OF SIN Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. (Silent Confession) ABSOLUTION (John 20:23) Absolution means “to grant forgiveness”. The words the minister shares here are Christ’s words of forgiveness to His children. Minister here reads comfortable words from scripture, then says: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, (+) confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. PRAYER FOR CHILDREN SIGN OF PEACE Minister: Alleluia. Christ is risen. People: The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia. Minister: May the Peace of the Lord be with you. (John 20: 19, 21) People: And with your spirit. Please greet one another during this time with a “Holy Fist Bump”. The traditional greeting is “Peace Be With You” with the response “And also with you…” THE LESSONS: LESSON SONG FIRST LESSON Acts 1:15-26 English Standard Version 15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, 16 “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms, “‘May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it’; and “‘Let another take his office.’ 21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” 23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias.
