As a teenager, David Balakrishnan saw Jimi Hendrix perform live. "I could feel the momentum of his genius shining through," the violinist, composer and founder of Turtle Island Quartet said earlier this year at Skywalker Ranch here. "I went home and listened to 'Electric Ladyland' for three days straight." Since then, Mr. Balakrishnan has sought to incorporate Hendrix's works into his repertoire. He's found a way. His string quartet's new album, "Have You Ever Been. ." (Telarc), is a tribute to Hendrix as the group's four musicians—Mark Summer on cello, Mads Tolling on violin and Jeremy Kittel on viola, in addition to Mr. Balakrishnan—reimagine eight songs associated with the guitarist, who died 40 years ago this month. The problem is that real collectors have already heard most of this material, and not only through bootleg sources. Many of the previously unreleased tracks are just new mixes of live tracks that were issued as part of StagesLive at Monterey, and Lifelines. Also included is a Jimi Hendrix - Experience Hendrix mix of the "Gloria" single. While the sound quality is Jimi Hendrix - Experience Hendrix better handled by the expert Eddie Kramerthe new mixes do not differ substantially from the earlier versions.     Jimpress Issue 107 Spring 2016 Street Brook 23 Brook Street – Through Gypsy Eyes Ben Valkhoff examines Jimi's actual tenure February 10th saw the opening of the restored flat at 23 Brook Street in London, advertised as "Jimi Hendrix’s first home in the UK," the place where he lived during 1968 and 1969. But was this really Jimi’s home? And did he really live there for a period of two years, as the plaque on the front of the building suggests? High time for a closer look. Until January 1968 Jimi Hendrix and his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham had lived as a couple at manager Chas Chandler’s house in Upper Berkeley Street. Jimi and his management moved their operation permanently to the U.S. when The Jimi Hendrix Experience started touring in early February of that year, leaving Kathy behind in England. When Chandler quit being Jimi’s manager at the end of the U.S. tour in the spring of 1968 following an argument, he returned to England for good and told Kathy to find herself and Jimi a new place to live. Kathy: “Chas and Jimi had put me in this position and they would just have to pay. I had to have somewhere to live.” For Jimi this would not have been a problem, because from then on he only visited the UK when work demanded it. Being accustomed to living in hotels, a permanent UK home was not necessary for Jimi. Besides, as one of the highest earning artists of his time, finding a temporary place to stay was not an issue for Jimi.

This is how it worked. We drew lots to establish an order for the contributions. Norma drew first base, followed by Christine on second, Sara on third, Lynda on fourth, and Marilyn on fifth. We brainstormed a number of possible opening lines, and Norma chose one of these to start the ball rolling with a couple of opening paragraphs. Norma then sent her opening paragraphs to Christine, who added to them, and passed them along to Sara, who added more, and so on, in round robin fashion. No one knew what anyone else had written until it was their turn; only then did they see how the story had begun rolling out. As each person had her turn, she had to pick up the story from the people who had gone before, using cues already suggested, and adding new elements to move it along while keeping the plot as consistent as possible. The project proved to be a huge amount of fun, and we all became very engaged, each of us longing to get our next part so we could see how it was shaping up. It brought us a lot of hilarity too, for nobody knew at any one time where on earth the story was going to go! One person might have a certain idea and nudge it in a certain direction, but then the next person might have quite different ideas, so that by the time it came back to the first person, it had moved in a quite other direction from what she had expected.
