  • MGM 70 YEARS: REDISCOVERIES and CLASSICS June 24 - September 30, 1994
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release May 1994 MGM 70 YEARS: REDISCOVERIES AND CLASSICS June 24 - September 30, 1994 A retrospective celebrating the seventieth anniversary of Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer, the legendary Hollywood studio that defined screen glamour and elegance for the world, opens at The Museum of Modern Art on June 24, 1994. MGM 70 YEARS: REDISCOVERIES AND CLASSICS comprises 112 feature films produced by MGM from the 1920s to the present, including musicals, thrillers, comedies, and melodramas. On view through September 30, the exhibition highlights a number of classics, as well as lesser-known films by directors who deserve wider recognition. MGM's films are distinguished by a high artistic level, with a consistent polish and technical virtuosity unseen anywhere, and by a roster of the most famous stars in the world -- Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Greta Garbo, and Spencer Tracy. MGM also had under contract some of Hollywood's most talented directors, including Clarence Brown, George Cukor, Vincente Minnelli, and King Vidor, as well as outstanding cinematographers, production designers, costume designers, and editors. Exhibition highlights include Erich von Stroheim's Greed (1925), Victor Fleming's Gone Hith the Hind and The Wizard of Oz (both 1939), Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise (1991). Less familiar titles are Monta Bell's Pretty Ladies and Lights of Old Broadway (both 1925), Rex Ingram's The Garden of Allah (1927) and The Prisoner - more - 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019-5498 Tel: 212-708-9400 Cable: MODERNART Telex: 62370 MODART 2 of Zenda (1929), Fred Zinnemann's Eyes in the Night (1942) and Act of Violence (1949), and Anthony Mann's Border Incident (1949) and The Naked Spur (1953).

  • Bodicacia's Tombstone
Phillip W. Weiss MALS 74500 Fall 2016 Bodicacia’s Tombstone – window to the past Commercially popular major motion pictures and television series depicting Rome and Romans, such as Quo Vadis (1951), Ben Hur (1959), Spartacus (1960), Cleopatra (1963), The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964), Fellini Satyricon (1969), I Claudius (1976 miniseries), Masada (1981 miniseries), Gladiator (2000) and The Passion of Christ (2004) have provided us with certain popular images of ancient Rome: a sprawling Empire led by pretentious mercenaries masquerading as agents of civilization (ripped off from the Greeks) who went everywhere throughout the known world imposing Roman “law,” i.e. power, at the point of a sword, that is, when they weren’t indulging themselves in the bathes, plotting to murder each other, or entertaining themselves at the arena by watching helpless captives, convicts and Christians (at least until the reign of Constantine) being butchered in staged shows. In short, it is an image of a society that was corrupt and oppressive, utterly depraved, totally merciless, sexually perverse, completely materialistic, spiritually hollow, and detested, with cause, by the rest of the world. Yet there had to a socially redeemable side to Rome. There is no way that such a thoroughly rotten society could have survived a thousand minutes, much less a thousand years. Roman culture had to be richer, more nuanced and more substantive than what is depicted in the popular mass media. Hence, through careful analysis of one ancient Roman tombstone memorializing the death of a woman named Bodicacia, this paper will provide a fairer, more balanced and more accurate depiction of Roman culture.

  • Uncivil Liberties and Libertines: Empire in Decay
Uncivil Liberties and Libertines: Empire in Decay MARIANNE MCDONALD 1. I’ve been a film nut from the time my parents would park me in a film theatre as their form of baby-sit- ting. My father invented phone vision, which was an early version of cablevision that allowed us to see newly released movies at home on our round television screen, which looked like an old Bendix washing machine. I wrote one of the earliest books on classics in cinema—and soon after, more books on the topic followed mine.1 I looked forward to seeing the films described in Ancient Rome, many of which I had not seen because I have avoided blood-fest films which invite being described with gore-filled ecstasy. (I have also avoided slasher movies, holocaust movies, and kiddie movies because they disturbed my possibly misguided sensi- bility.) The choices of films in Elena’s Theodorakopoulos’ book are all the work of interesting directors—some better than others, but the quality is, for the most part, high. The writ- ers for all these film scripts are generally outstanding. Good photography also seems to be a given. As we are told in the conclusion, “Whatever the story, spectacle is never far from Rome.” The key to assessing these treatments lies in the interpreta- tion of the portrayal of violence. Are we, the audience, ad- miring it? Calling for it, as we call for it in films by Quentin Tarentino, beginning with Reservoir Dogs (1992), or the se- ries called Saw, the seventh version (2010) now in 3-d? Do Elena Theodorakopoulos, Ancient Rome at the Cinema: Story and Spectacle in Hollywood and Rome.

  • Fighting for Reproductive Rights and Access to Abortion
FIGHTING FOR REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS AND ACCESS TO ABORTION In the past decade, state and federal attacks on reproductive rights have increased significantly. Despite this, Democratic Attorneys General (AGs) have countered these destructive laws and policies by fighting back in the courts. Roe v. Wade guarantees the right to safe and legal abortions. To ensure that that fundamental right is preserved, Democratic AGs have repeatedly supported efforts to protect meaningful access to abortion and safe reproductive healthcare. A recent NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist polli shows that 77 percent of Americans support preserving Roe. In fact, 53 percent of Americans say they would “definitely not” vote for a candidate who would appoint Supreme Court justices who would limit or overturn Roe. Even with a partisan divide, additional polling shows that 50 percent of Republicans do not want to see Roe overturned. Standing aligned with the majority of Americans, Democratic AGs are fighting to preserve access to reproductive healthcare and safe abortions. Below are a few highlights of the actions Democratic AGs have taken on reproductive rights and abortion access: Protecting Abortion Access and Autonomy ✓ A coalition of 20 AGs led by New York Attorney General Letitia James stopped efforts by the Trump Administration to allow healthcare providers the ability to refuse lawful medical care to patients based on religious or moral grounds.ii Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson secured a similar ruling to block the Trump Administration’s “conscience rule.” Injunctive relief from these two suits are currently providing patients across the country protections from discriminatory practices.iii California Attorney General Xavier Becerra has also brought a separate suit against the Trump Administration on this issue and has sought a preliminary injunction against the rule.iv ✓ A coalition of 16 AGs led by Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul filed an amicus brief in Whole Woman’s Health Alliance v.

  • No Oscar for the Oscar? Behind Hollywood's Walk of Greed
Networking Knowledge 7(4) All About Oscar No Oscar for the Oscar? Behind Hollywood’s Walk of Greed ELIZABETH CASTALDO LUNDEN, Stockholm University ABSTRACT In 1966 the popular interest in the Academy Awards propelled Paramount Pictures to produce The Oscar (Embassy Pictures-Paramount Pictures, 1966), a film based on the homonymous novel by Richard Sale. The Oscar tells the story of an unscrupulous actor willing to do anything in his power to obtain the golden statuette, regardless of whom he has to take down along the way. Building up on fantasies of social mobility, we see the protagonist (Frankie) display his vanity, arrogance and greed to create a less than likeable character whose only hope to put his career back on track lies in obtaining the precious statuette. The movie intends to be a sneak peek behind the scenes of the biggest award ceremony, but also behind the lifestyle of the Hollywood elites, their glory and their misery as part of the Hollywood disposal machinery. Despite not being financed or officially supported by the Academy, the film intertwines elements of fiction and reality by using real footage of the event, and featuring several contemporary representatives of the movie industry such as Edith Head, Hedda Hopper, Frank and Nancy Sinatra, playing cameo roles, adding up to the inter- textual capacities of the story. Head’s participation was particularly exploited for the promotion of the film, taking advantage of her position at Paramount, her status as a multiple winner, and her role as a fashion consultant for the Academy Awards. This paper is an analytical account of the film’s production process.
